Chanja Datti Recycling Co. Chanja Datti is transforming waste into value through recycling. Some children turn these heaps to play sites at the risk of their health.

Environmental pollution is estimated to be one of the biggest causes of death around the world, affecting more than 100million people per year, more than Malaria and HIV. Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria has an estimated population of 1.4 million people associated with its fast growing pace of urbanization. This has led to the city's struggle to adequately manage its Municipal

Solid Waste, which is an estimated 378,040 tons yearly. Barely 40% of solid waste generated is formally collected to the few designated dumpsites, while the remaining 60% of uncollected waste, 15% of which is non-biodegradable waste, find their way into waterways, drainages and streets. Nigeria's plastic industry has grown from 50 companies with a production capacity of 100 tons in 1960, to over 3,000 companies with a production capacity of over 100,000 tons per year. Plastics and rubber products recorded a growth rate of 23.8% in 2013, attributed to polythene and plastic packaging, which constitutes the fastest growing segment of the industry, but also one of the largest contributors of non-biodegradable waste pollutants. The formally collected 40% of the waste generated is managed by combustion and landfill methods by the regulatory and supervisory body, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB). These methods lead to the release of greenhouse and other toxic gases into the atmosphere, thereby encouraging climate change, soil degradation and erosion, and the depletion of our natural resources, biodiversity and landscape. The uncollected 60% of the waste generated become eye-sores and nauseating heaps on and around street corners. A significant proportion clogs the waterways and drainages, leading to flooding and breeding of disease causing microorganisms from stagnant water. Chanja Datti was borne out of the need to save our environment from looming environmental disaster or crisis associated with indiscriminate waste disposal and poor waste management cultures in Nigeria, especially in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory; and open up entrepreneurial and employment opportunities for youths and women.

Throwback to Global Recycling Day!

In celebration of Global Recycling Day, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting the team from Transcorp Hilton Abuja at our recycling facility.

It was an incredible opportunity to walk their team through our day-to-day operations and to showcase the tangible impact of sustainable waste management.

Conversations like the ones we had during this visit are vital for bridging the gap between corporate sustainability goals and on-the-ground environmental action.

Thank you to the Transcorp Hilton team for taking the time to visit, learn, and share in our vision for a cleaner, greener future. Great partnerships are the driving force behind a truly circular economy.

What a morning. ๐Ÿ’š

Last Saturday, we hit the streets of Jabi for the Waste to Wealth Walk. Residents stepped out to ask questions. Kids waved. Strangers became part of the conversation. And the message landed: plastic waste is wealth waiting to be unlocked.

Huge thank you to all our partners, to the volunteers who showed up at 7:30 am ready to move, and to the Jabi community for receiving us with open arms.

The walk might be over, but the recycling continues.

A look back at the "Dear Entrepreneur: We See You, We Hear You" National Stakeholder Dialogue ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

Our team was present at the convening organized by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Entrepreneurship Development.

The room brought policymakers and entrepreneurs together to tackle one question: how do we move government mandates into real, working support for SMEs? With NGX, FCMB, Access Bank, and Cascador in the room, the private-sector appetite for backing grassroots innovation was clear.

For Chanja Datti, conversations like this matter. The circular economy, waste-to-value enterprise, and the livelihoods of waste pickers belong in every dialogue about Nigeria's economic future, and we'll keep showing up for it.

Most people think when they throw a bottle "away," it just... disappears. But, there is no such place as "away." Everything ends up somewhere. At Chanja Datti, we make sure that "somewhere" is useful.

That bottle you just finished? It's actually at the start of a transformation journey. We collect it right from your doorstep, sort it carefully, process it into raw material, and turn it into something new-like a household bowl or dustpan.

This is a full-circle comeback story where what was once considered "waste" returns to your home as something valuable.

But the cycle only works if it starts with you.

Next time you're about to toss that plastic, remember: it's not the end of its life, it's just waiting for its next chapter.

Our Head of Programs and Partnerships, Martha Eginiwin , served as a panellist at the first-ever International Day of Women in Industry (IDWI) event hosted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in Abuja, Nigeria.

The inaugural commemoration of IDWI was observed on 21st April 2026, following its adoption through a landmark resolution at the 2025 UNIDO General Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It highlights womenโ€™s roles in driving industrial competitiveness and showcases their contributions to industrial transformation, Artificial Intelligence, the future of work, and green transitions.

As an organization who has committed to building the circular economy for over a decade, we shared our experience in building a sustainable social enterprise, driving impact through our different initiatives and areas of collaboration.

The event convened women across diverse industries to spotlight contributions, address challenges, share UNIDOโ€™s commitments and partnerships, and encourage continued collaboration.

Present at the event were the Director and Country Representative of UNIDO and ECOWAS, Amb. Philbert Abaka Johnson, the UN Women Country Representative, Ms Eyong Beatrice, the Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health Department of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Engr. Dr. Bahijjatu Abubakar FSNE, and representatives from government, private, and civic sector organizations, who delivered goodwill messages and shared their work on shaping the future of industry.

We continue to appreciate UNIDO for its continued support for women-led enterprises.
