Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon and the Richest man in the world:

"I very frequently get the question: "what's going to change in he next 10 years?"

I almost never get the question: "what's not going to change in the next 10 years?"

I submit to you that the second question is actually the more important of the two -- because you can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time.

In our retail business, we know that customers want low prices, and i know that's going to be true in 10 years from now.

They want fast delivery; they want vast selection, it is impossible to imagine a future 10 years from now where a customer comes up and says, 'Jeff I love Amazon; I just wish the prices were a little higher,' [or] 'I love Amazon; I just wish you deliver a little more slowly.' Impossible.

And so the effort we put into those things, spinning those things up, we know the energy we put into it today will still be paying off dividends for our customers years from now.

When you have something that you know is true, even over a long term, you can afford to put a lot of energy into it."

: If you are an Entrepreneurs and it seems business is not working out well, remember that business is a destination.

It is a journey from Point Nothing to Point Something and there will away be hills to climb and rivers to swim, and as long you are on the right road facing the right direction, keep moving.

"If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t walk run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but by all means keep moving."

Be a Master of Your Craft: Charles Proteus Steinmetz, the Wizard of Schenectady

Charles Proteus Steinmetz was a master of his craft, mathematics and electrical engineering. Though he stood just 4 feet tall, his body contorted by a hump in his back, he was a giant among scientific thinkers, counting Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison as friends,

Stories of his mastery of engineering traveled far and wide and one appeared on the letters page of Life magazine in 1965, after the magazine had printed a story on Steinmetz. Jack B. Scott wrote in to tell of his father’s encounter with the Wizard of Schenectady (as he is popularly called), at Henry Ford’s River Rouge plant in Dearborn, Michigan.

As reported by Smithsonian,

"Ford, whose electrical engineers couldn’t solve some problems they were having with a gigantic generator, called Steinmetz in to the plant.

Upon arriving, Steinmetz rejected all assistance and asked only for a notebook, pencil and cot. According to Scott, Steinmetz listened to the generator and scribbled computations on the notepad for two straight days and nights.

On the second night, he asked for a ladder, climbed up the generator and made a chalk mark on its side. Then he told Ford’s skeptical engineers to remove a plate at the mark and replace sixteen windings from the field coil. They did, and the generator performed to perfection.

Henry Ford was thrilled until he got an invoice from General Electric in the amount of $10,000. Ford acknowledged Steinmetz’s success but balked at the figure. He asked for an itemized bill.

Steinmetz, Scott wrote, responded personally to Ford’s request with the following:

Making chalk mark on generator = $1.
Knowing where to make mark = $9,999.

Ford paid the bill."

The day majority of Africans start acquiring knowledge out of curiosity, as an end in itself, or a means to personal & societal development, instead of a just a means to be at the top among peers, earn a living, gain respect or make wealth, that day Africa will be on its way to prosperity.

Freelancing is Different in Africa

Today, freelancers represent 35% of the United States workforce. In the European Union, the rate is 16.1%, while South African figures are harder to determine, the number is thought to be about 10% and rising strongly. These figures demonstrate the same global trend: from creative entrepreneurs to those paid by the task, freelancing is on the rise worldwide.

In OECD countries, studies show that these individuals work chiefly in the service sector (50% of men and 70% of women). The remainder are everything from online assistants to architects, designers and photographers, and are mostly communications, media, design, art and tech, among others sectors.

The current increase in freelancing being observed is as a result of the increase outsourcing of tradition 9-to-5 white collar jobs to freelancers. This way of working is yet to be fully embraced in Africa country.

Freelancers in Africa are majorly blue collar workers who traditionally are the continents freelancers. They are majorly independent contractors hired on a project-to-project basis and work with different people most of the time. They are huge part of the continent's large informal sector.

Pink and especially white collar freelancers are few in Africa as there are fewer opportunity for white collar jobs in the continent. While some white collar workers left 9-to-5 jobs with poor pay to become freelancers, most became freelancers after failing to get a 9-to-5 job. This way of work was not the preferred choice for many white collar freelancers. unlike the United States where only 37% of current freelancers in the country say they resort to freelancing out of necessity.

In developed countries freelancing is increasingly a choice that people mostly make in order to escape the 9-to-5 workday or in other to work in style, trying to combine innovative approaches to business and lifestyle, making freelancing sound like an innovation or freedom.

This cannot be said of freelancing in most African countries, as the labor market and work environment are different. Most African freelancers never had the opportunity to have a 9-to-5 job, not to mention escaping from one. To them freelancing has nothing to do with style or work performance, it is simply a way to survive as daily they struggle to get enough gigs to get-by, and as such many of them have become jack of many trade.

For instance, a typical Nigerian freelancer can be a photographer, event managers, social media marketer, content writer, etc., However, some who started this way struggling, after some years have become successful and are earning good money.

The freelance industry for white and blue collar jobs in Africa is till very young. Full-time government or company-based work is still the standard for employment in Africa and African workers feel more secured and respected with a regular 9-to-5 job.
