While the Senate’s call for the President to recruit over 100,000 new security personnel may appear proactive, I believe it is not the most effective long-term solution. Increasing numbers alone will not solve Nigeria’s deep-rooted security challenges. What we truly need is better training, modern equipment, stronger intelligence gathering, and proper welfare for the personnel already serving. Without fixing these foundational issues, adding more numbers may only stretch an already weak structure.

Instead of mass recruitment, government should focus on reforming the security system, improving coordination among agencies, investing in technology, and addressing the socio-economic factors that fuel insecurity. Sustainable progress will come from strategy and reform not just swelling the ranks.

The incident involving the schoolgirls taken in Kebbi State is deeply troubling and calls for sober reflection. At times like this, it is important that we avoid blame and focus instead on supporting the authorities as they work toward the safe return of these children. Our thoughts should remain with the families, who are experiencing unimaginable worry, and with the communities affected.

This unfortunate event reminds us of the urgent need to strengthen security around schools and to continue improving the systems that protect our young ones. With unity, patience, and coordinated action, we can create an environment where every child learns without fear.
