Last week, our CEO, Arc. Tunde Oyekola, joined American Institute of Architects (AIA) International for the Sub-Saharan Africa Symposium to explore the intersection of culture, value, and process in project delivery.

Using the Award winning Dutse International Airport as a case study, he shared the principles that have guided EMA’s most complex infrastructure projects.

In case you missed it, here are the key takeaways from his presentation:

1. Africa does not suffer from a shortage of projects, it suffers from inconsistent project cultures: Africa is growing rapidly and with this growth comes a need for architecture and construction expertise. As consultants, it is our job to create an environment that allows projects to run smoothly and efficiently.

2. Trust is a delivery accelerator: Clients must trust their consultants, partners and vendors to deliver, and consultants must trust their clients to provide the necessary resources. At the core, open communication is the lubricant for this engine.

3. Choose long-term value over short-term savings: every client has different needs and goals and the role of a consultant is to help the client make optimal decisions. Sometimes, this may require a little more cost in the short-term to deliver long-term value (and potentially, savings).

It was a thoroughly engaging and rewarding experience.

Last year, we welcomed Sindara Oyekola (PMP)® to our Lagos office as the General Manager of our Southern Region.

Sindara brings a wealth of expertise to EMA, having spent five years at one of the largest construction companies in the United States. Today, she translates that global perspective into local impact, driving efficiency and leading with passion across our growing portfolio.

We are also incredibly proud to announce that she recently achieved her Project Management Certification (PMP)!

For our work on the NERC (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission) headquarters, we were intentional about creating a resilient yet contemporary commercial building. Thirteen years later, this development is still standing tall.

This 10-floor (G+9) mid-rise framed reinforced concrete structure combines glass and aluminium composite panel cladding with sinuous curves on three sides and features a fully functional basement parking to support building tenants.

When we completed the concrete shell construction of NICE I Plaza, our goal was simple: total flexibility for the end user. By configuring the 10 floors (G+9) with predominantly open-plan spaces, we’ve empowered future tenants to customize the floor layouts to suit their unique organizational needs.

To ensure a seamless, high-performance environment for every occupant, NICE I Plaza also boasts a full complement of advanced mechanical and electrical services.

At EMA, we believe that the modern office should be as adaptable as the businesses inside and belief is evident in our designs.

We’ve shared our architectural vision and a peek into our 30-year history, but today, let’s take a closer look at our construction team’s progress on NICE II Plaza, a 10-floor (G + 10) office tower with a 6-level parking structure attached.

Having designed the buildings on either side (NERC and NICE I Plaza), we were already intimately familiar with the area’s undulating topography.

Rather than fighting the existing landscape and leveling the ground, we chose to leverage the natural slope of the land. We designed the multi-storey parking on split levels beginning with a basement parking level (Parking Level 1A), while the main office tower slab sits approximately 3m higher.

By embracing the site’s natural conditions, we’ve optimized construction costs and site functionality.

Meet Arc. Florence Eribake (MNIA, Int Assoc. AIA) who has been with EMA since 2014. As our Assistant Director of Procurement, she helps ensure every project is delivered on budget and in line with specifications.
