1,700 LIVES SAVED: FIRE SERVICE STEPS UP REFORMS, DEMANDS STRONGER FIRE SAFETY FRAMEWORK

The Federal Fire Service has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening fire safety systems nationwide, highlighting major reforms, improved personnel welfare, and significant operational gains as Nigeria commemorates International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) 2026.

The Controller General, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, MBA, MDRM, ACTI, FCNA, made this known during the Service’s official commemoration themed “Courage Under Fire: Recognising the Sacrifices and Realities of Firefighting.”

He disclosed that within the first quarter of 2026, the Service responded to hundreds of incidents, saving over 1,700 lives and protecting properties valued at more than ₦300 billion, underscoring the growing impact of ongoing reforms and operational improvements.

As part of efforts to reposition the Service, the Controller General outlined key policy-driven initiatives implemented under his leadership. These include one of the most extensive promotion exercises in recent history, with over 2,600 officers elevated across ranks to address long-standing career stagnation and improve morale.

In strengthening capacity, over 700 cadet officers have been trained and inducted, alongside specialised programmes such as the Haskebiu Training Programme, Counter-Ambush Intelligence and Movement Security Course, and other strategic courses aimed at enhancing operational competence and leadership.

Reinforcing the Service’s commitment to operational safety, the Controller General assured that firefighters’ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be improved, stressing that no firefighter will be deployed to any incident without adequate protection.

On personnel welfare, the Service has introduced structured support systems including interest-free loan schemes, expanded medical coverage for injuries and health-related issues, and enhanced insurance packages covering death, injury, and retirement benefits. The Controller General also approved repatriation support for retired officers, reinforcing post-service welfare.

The Service has further improved working conditions through facility renovations and enhanced workplace maintenance, alongside expanded health and wellness programmes, including targeted medical outreach and screenings for personnel.

To institutionalise recognition and accountability, the Controller General announced the inauguration of the Controller General’s Awards Committee, which will oversee formal recognition of gallantry, professionalism, and outstanding service within the ranks.

The event featured a public lecture delivered by Professor Okey Ikechukwu, mni, and was attended by senior government officials, stakeholders, and members of the public.

Beyond internal reforms, the Controller General called for legislative and stakeholder support to strengthen national fire safety infrastructure. He urged members of the National Assembly to fast-track the repeal and enactment of the Federal Fire Service and Rescue Act, and to prioritise the establishment of fire stations within constituency projects to improve coverage and reduce response time.

He also called on corporate organisations to integrate fire safety support into their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The Service emphasised that public cooperation remains critical to effective emergency response, urging citizens to comply with safety protocols, give way to emergency vehicles, and avoid interference at incident scenes.

The event featured the unveiling of the International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) brooch, decoration of senior officers, and the inauguration of the Controller General’s Awards Committee.

BALLAD OF THOSE WHO WALK INTO FIRE

Before the morning begins its call,
A siren breaks the silence for all, No promise of return, just quiet desire,
They rise and answer the fire.

They did not start what burns in flame, Yet somehow they are the ones we blame,
Racing through chaos, through pressure and higher,
Still chasing the fire.

They meet blocked roads and voices that fight,
Seconds are lost in panic and spite, While someone waits in danger dire,Trapped in the fire.

Yet into the heat, they still choose to go,
Into the smoke where few would go, Where breath is thin and hope climbs higher,
They walk through fire.

But the flames don’t end when the job is done,
They follow them home when the day is gone, In lungs, in dreams, in wounds that tire, Echoes of fire.

Still no applause, just the next alarm, Another call into rising harm, No rest, no pause, no chance to retire, Only the fire.

Behind every helmet, a life, a name, A heart, a home, a love the same, A family waiting in silent choir, For one from the fire.

So when you hear that siren cry, Do not delay, do not deny,.Clear the road, lift them higher Respect the fire.

And when they return with nothing to say, Just silence and weight from another day, Let gratitude rise, lift them higher ŕFor those who walk into fire.

Again, when you hear the siren,
Clear the way. Do not stand in their path.
And when you can Say the words that matter, THANK YOU Because sometimes, All they return with Is exhaustion, and silence.

"Happy International Firefighters' Day" to the quiet guardians who run toward chaos with courage, turning moments of danger into chances for life to be saved.

THANK YOU, for all that you do!

A WORKERS’ DAY REFLECTION

On behalf of the Management of the Federal Fire Service, I extend warm greetings to all workers across Nigeria on this year’s Workers’ Day.

Ordinarily, messages like this are captured in simple designs and shared in passing. But today, I have chosen to speak more directly, because the value of your labour, sacrifice, and dedication deserves more than a few lines on a poster.

To the courageous officers and men of the Federal Fire Service, I speak to you with deep respect. Your duty calls you into moments others run from. You face heat, danger, and uncertainty; not for recognition, but because lives depend on you.

Be encouraged. Stand firm in your calling. Continue to serve with courage, discipline, and unity. Your sacrifices are seen, your impact is real, and your service to the nation is invaluable.
