‘What can a fresh graduate focus on while awaiting NYSC?’
Someone asked me this question a while ago and I will be sharing 2 of my answers here.
(Kindly share with someone )

I remember what it feels to be a fresh graduate - the relief that comes with finally having time to rest, the joy that comes from completion but after a while, you move into the ‘What Next phase’ especially if you didn't have a side gig.

Well, these are 2 things you can do as you wait.

1- Volunteer: I talk about this all the time because I benefited greatly from it.

As a fresh graduate, you might already have some areas of interest. Look out for people and businesses in that area of interest online, within your environment or in another location where you can travel to.

As a Corps Member, I was the only person my PPA accepted initially because of the experience I already had volunteering as a Campus Journalist in School and working in the State broadcasting service after School.

If you find it hard to get volunteering opportunities, you just might have to create them especially if you are in an environment where there are little options.
-Seek out all the companies, businesses or individuals you are Interested in, you can use Linkedin to send emails or go to them physically.
-You can even decide to work for Free for the first month just to show what you can do (Most of them will still pay)
-If it’s someone online, offer a service the person might need… You can even be a V.A

All of these are my suggestions based on what has worked for me and a lot of others, you can tweak it to suit you.

2. Take an Online Course- There are a lot of Free courses to start from and you can even learn with your phone(No excuses)

If you have some savings, you can invest in a good network/data plan or if you struggle to stay consistent virtually, look for physical locations offering the course.

If you already developed some of your basic Creative skills like Writing, Drawing, Video creation etc, Find a way to up-skill or integrate Tech
An example will be a storyteller can learn more about copywriting, digital marketing, and content marketing. They are aligned.

An Artist can learn more about Design tools, Product design, etc

I trust this will give you an insight into how to navigate this new phase.

A few months ago when AI became the talk in town, it came with so much excitement and worry especially amongst creatives as some worried about their jobs.

With the new influx of AI pictures, a lot of people are of the opinion that there wouldn't be need for photographers soon

I find all of it funny.

The truth is that Tech and AI tools are not here as competitors. They are here to enable and also complement our work as Creatives.

That's why before using these tools- Chat GPT, it's important to have some background knowledge on the topic or go the extra mile to modify the result you get to avoid plagiarism claims.

Creatives play a huge role in the advancement of Technology in Africa.

‘As we shine our light, we give others the permission to do so too’
This is one of the foundations of my life and that's why I derive so much joy in teaching and sharing knowledge on my different areas of expertise.

How can Creatives thrive in times of uncertainty?

This question has been on my mind for the past few days.

Do you think that Creativity and Innovation gets declined in seasons of uncertainty?

My initial answer would have been Yes but with more in-depth thought, the answer is actually No.

Some of the greatest innovative brands in the world like Airbnb, Uber, inventions like Helicopters, radios were developed in seasons on uncertainty.

Here's how Creatives can thrive in these times:
1- Surround yourself with people on a similar mission and with similar vision as you.
When you have people you can talk to and together you guys can focus on solutions instead of problems, trust me you will feel and do way better.

2- Refuse to panic.
Look out for activities or conversations that make you panic and avoid them.
The Bible talks about ‘Guarding your heart’

3-Seek out opportunities to create/contribute to Creative innovations.

Some of the greatest opportunities don't come wrapped in shiny paper, some do. In all of this, your ability to discern will guide you.

4-Learn skills that transcends seasons. I recently shared how skills like Marketing (Digital Marketing: Content marketing, copywriting, Ads and Media buying etc ) Sales(Leads nurturing, Closing etc), Writing, Design and some soft skills will always be important.

Creativity thrives in every industry so finding ways to integrate creativity and unique ideations in everything you do is important.

On International Youth Day, this year, we will be having an in-depth conversation on this topic.

Just one thing?

It might be starting your online course, it might be sending out an application, it might be creating content about your business or even reaching out to a prospective partner or investor?

Now, Do it.

What's the worst that would happen?

You would get a ‘No’ or ‘We are sorry to inform you...’😭
This one can pain shaa

You might even get ‘Yes’ or ‘Try again’

Whichever one happens, You will definitely feel the fulfillment of taking action.

I feel humbled to have been selected to be part of the 2023 cohort of the Advance Africa Scholarship in partnership with Access and Udacity.

Thinking of getting certified in any Tech related field, look out for Udacity programs.
Udacity is one of the top Tech Training Institutes in the world.

I look forward to dedicating time to this course in the next few months, learning, finding connecting dots and a balance between this and my existing skill sets, and connecting with other Tech enthusiasts.

3 years today, I made my debut on a Tedx stage where I performed a piece titled "Changing the Narrative".

This was the theme of the Tedx Awka event and from the screenshots attached below from Mr (Former Commissioner of Economic Planning and Budget) and Mr Ujamidaize that performance was fan-flaming-tastic.

I miss performing poetry but now apart from my professional work in the media and communication industry, I am glad that together with my team, we work with young children to discover their preferred skills and we train them in poetry and other Art forms through our Project.
