September was a month of engaging in meaningful conversations, learning, collaboration and action across our work in antimicrobial resistance, health systems strengthening, research and professional empowerment.

From advancing the African AMR Voices Network and strengthening sustainable approaches to AMR interventions, to contributing to conversations at the NISA Conference 2026 and supporting emerging researchers through the Knowledge Exchange Series, the month reflected our continued focus on building practical, locally responsive solutions to health challenges.

We also explored what meaningful pharmacist empowerment requires in Nigeria through our featured article and the Pharmacy Listening Project, while our Innovation Corner examined the potential of point-of-care diagnostics to support more targeted antibiotic prescribing in Africa.

Our explores how the LumiraDx Platform is using rapid point-of-care diagnostics to support more targeted antibiotic prescribing and strengthen antimicrobial stewardship in Africa.

By providing quantitative C-reactive protein (CRP) results within minutes, the platform can give clinicians additional information during consultations to support antibiotic prescribing decisions. Its portable design and ability to operate without internet connectivity also make it relevant to rural and resource-limited healthcare settings.

With only 1.3% of approximately 50,000 medical laboratories across 14 African countries conducting bacteriology testing, innovations that expand access to timely diagnostics could play an important role in strengthening antimicrobial stewardship and health systems.

How resilient can a health system be if it cannot produce the essential health products it needs?

From vaccines and medicines to medical technologies, strengthening local production is increasingly important for health security and long-term sustainability.

Dr. Claudia Shilumani captures the principle simply:

“If we prioritize self-sufficiency in health, developing, producing, and distributing our own vaccines, medicines, and medical technologies, the centre will hold.”

Health system resilience is ultimately a financing question.

When health financing is predictable and sustainable, countries are better positioned to maintain essential services, invest for the long term, and respond to emerging health threats.

For Africa, building resilient health systems therefore means strengthening not only how we deliver care, but also how we finance it.

As Marie-Antoinette Rose-Quatre reminds us, fragile financing can undermine even the strongest health systems.

We are excited to announce that Ducit Blue Foundation has partnered with The AMR Narrative to implement the African AMR Voices Network, bringing together lived experience and collective voices to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across Africa.

At the heart of the network is a commitment to ensure that people and communities affected by AMR have greater opportunities to contribute to awareness, advocacy and action.

While lived experience will remain central, we want this network to bring together the wider AMR community, including patients and survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals and health experts, patient organisations, advocates and other stakeholders working to address AMR across Africa.

A particular priority will be reaching under-represented communities and regions, while building connections across countries, perspectives and languages.
