KNOW YOUR GAS CYLINDERS:
Are you aware of the different types of gas cylinders in your home? More importantly, do you know the potential risks they pose if not managed correctly?
Let’s dive into the three main types and a critical safety guide for the most popular modern choice.
The Big Three
1. Fiber (Composite) Cylinders
2. Stainless Steel Cylinders
3. Iron Metal Cylinders
Deep Dive: The Fiber Cylinder 🧪
Fiber cylinders are becoming a favorite for many, but they come with specific “rules of engagement.”
• The Perks: They are aesthetically pleasing, lightweight (approx. 5kg empty / 17kg full), and transparent—allowing you to actually see your liquid gas levels.
• The Lifespan: According to SON (Standards Organisation of Nigeria), these have a maximum lifespan of 15 years.
• The 5-Year Retest Rule: Look at the retest date on the cylinder cap. You must return it to a certified gas plant for a retest every 5 years. This ensures the fiber structure can still safely retain LPG.
⚠️ Critical Safety Warnings:
• Sun Exposure: Unlike metal, fiber wears out and degrades under direct sunlight. Keep these shaded and cool!
• The Weight Test: If your 5kg (empty) cylinder starts weighing in at 3.5kg or 4kg, it’s losing structural integrity. Stop using it immediately.
• Retesting Hubs: Professional retesting is specialized. Currently, there are limited centers in Nigeria (primarily in Lagos and Port Harcourt).
The Bottom Line: After 5 years of use, be extra vigilant. If you can, keep your cylinders in a well-ventilated area outside the main kitchen space.

Let’s dive into it real quick,
We have what we call
1. Fiber Gas cylinder
2. Stainless Steel cylinder
3. Iron metal Gas cylinder.

Detail;
1. Fiber cylinder; this are they type of cylinder that’s transparent and very light, you can see the content(the liquid ice gas ) in the cylinder, and it is always light to carry, because when it’s empty it weigh around 5kg and when it’s filled, it weigh about 17Kg.
According to SON, this cylinder can only lasted for 15yrs and in between that 15years, it is mandatory to take it back to Gas plant for a retest.
After purchases, by the cap of the cylinder, there’s always a retesting date or the last date it was retested, all you need to do is to add 5years to the date and take the cylinder back for a retest.
What’s the essence of the Retest; The retest is to assure you of the potentiality of the gas cylinder to retain LPG, it is a fiber cylinder and it wears out with time, and some people do expose it to sunlight, the cylinder is not the type to expose to sun.
Where can you take it to for a retest?
There are only few retesting centre in Nigeria, we only have Less than 5, 2 in lagos, 2 in PH and if SON has the equipment.
Bigger risk of it in today’s Nigeria.
Many Gas plant stop using weight or scale to weigh the cylinder, which is the easiest way to figure out if the cylinder is becoming weak, How ? If from 5kg on cylinder when newly bought is not weighing less than 5Kg(3.5 or 4kg) then it is advisable to stop using the cylinder.

Why would you recommend the fiber cylinder?
Well, it is aesthetically pleasing and it is very light to carry.

After 5years, be on guard and keep your cylinder away from your kitchen!
