Nigeria Takes a Bold Step Toward Transforming Its Animal Health Sector.
After years of fragmented efforts, Nigeria's livestock and animal health sector is moving toward a unified, long-term vision. Ikore, in partnership with GALVmed and the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, recently convened a 3-day strategic stakeholder engagement that culminated in the validation of a 10-year National Roadmap for Veterinary Services in Nigeria, a landmark step toward stronger animal health systems and more resilient food security across the country.
The engagement brought together the Honorable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, State Directors of Veterinary Services, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria(CVON), former CVONs, development partners, vaccine commercial partners, and academics from across the sector.
A clear message emerged from three days of deliberation: improving vaccination coverage demands coordinated action across government, academia, development partners, and the private sector, and Nigeria can no longer afford to delay.
As Dr. Moses Arokoyo stated, "Nigeria has a huge potential. Current turnover is $32 billion, with a target of $74 billion in the livestock industry over the next ten years, which is unachievable without vaccination."
The Veterinary Innovations Transforming Animal Health and Livelihoods project is the engine driving this momentum. Through this initiative, Ikore and GALVmed are expanding vaccine service delivery and last-mile access to animal health services across Nigeria.
