NOK CULTURE, NORTH NIGERIA 🇳🇬

The Nok culture (or Nok civilization) is a population whose material remains are named after the Ham village of Nok in Kaduna State of Nigeria, where their terracotta sculptures were first discovered in 1928. The Nok Culture appeared in Nigeria around 1500 BC and vanished under unknown circumstances around 500 AD, having lasted approximately 2,000 years.

Iron use, in smelting and forging tools, appears in Nok culture by at least 550 BC and possibly a few centuries earlier. Data from historical linguistics suggest that iron smelting was independently discovered in the region by 1000 BC.Scientific field work began in 2005 to systematically investigate Nok archaeological sites and to better understand Nok terracotta sculptures within their Iron Age archaeological contex.

Origin

Breunig and Rupp hypothesized, "Their origin is unknown, but since the plants they used as crops (especially millet) are indigenous to the Sahel region, a northern homeland is more probable than any other." Breunig explains: "The people of the Nok Culture Must have come from somewhere else. So far, however, we have not found out what region, though we suspect the Sahel zone in West Africa."

The function of Nok terracotta sculptures is still unknown. For the most part, the terracotta is preserved in the form of scattered fragments. That is why Nok art is well known today only for the heads, both male and female, whose hairstyles are particularly detailed and refined. The statues are in fragments because the discoveries are usually made from alluvial mud, in terrain made by the erosion of water. The terracotta statues found there are hidden, rolled, polished, and broken. Rarely are works of great size conserved intact making them highly valued on the international art market.

The first Nok terracotta was discovered in 1928 by Colonel Dent Young, a co-owner of a mining partnership, near the village of Nok in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The terracotta was accidentally unearthed at a level of 24 feet (7 m) from an alluvial tin mine. Young presented the sculptures to the Museum of the Department of Mines in Jos.

Descendants

The area that became Nigeria has been occupied for thousands of years by early humans, with the first being the Nok cultural areas, followed by Lejja, in Enugu, now southeast Nigeria, dating over 3000BC. The first archeology of cultural significance down south of Nigeria that is linked to the present inhabitants was recorded at Igbo ukwu (8TH-9TH century AD) followed by Ile ife (12th century and) and then Benin bronzes (16-17th century AD).

As each share cultural and artistic similarity with the Nok culture found in Nok, Sokoto, and Katsina, the Niger-Congo-speaking Yoruba, Jukun, or Dakakari peoples may be descendants of the Nok peoples. Based on stylistic similarities with the Nok terracottas, the bronze figurines of the Yoruba kingdom of Ife and the Bini kingdom of Benin may also be continuations of the traditions of the earlier Nok culture.

A young man asked his grandfather,
"Grandpa, how did you live in the past without technology . . .
without computers
without drones
without bitcoins
without Internet connection
without TVs
without air conditioners
without cars
without mobile phones?"

Grandpa answered:
"Just as your generation lives today . . .
no prayers,
no compassion,
no respect,
no GMRC,
no real education,
poor personality,
there is no human kindness,
there is no shame,
there is no modesty,
there is no honesty.

We, the people born between the years 1930-1980, were the blessed ones. Our lives are a living proof."

¶ While playing and riding a bike, we have never worn a helmet.
¶ after school we did our homework ourselves and we always played in meadows until sunset
¶ We played with real friends, not virtual friends.
¶ If we were thirsty, we would drink frim the fountain, from the waterfalls, faucet water, not mineral water.
¶ We never worried and get sick even as we shared the same cup or plate with our friends.
¶ We never gained weight by eating bread and pasta every day.
¶ Nothing happened to our feet despite walking barefoot.
¶ We never used food supplements to stay healthy.
¶ We used to make our own toys and play with them.
¶ Our parents were not rich. They gave us love, not material gifts.
¶ We never had a cell phone, DVD, PSP, game console, Xbox, video games, PC, laptop, internet chat . . . but we had true friends.
¶ We visited our friends without being invited and shared and enjoyed the food with their family.
Parents lived nearby to take advantage of family time.
¶ We may have had black and white photos, but you can find colorful memories in these photos.
¶ We are a unique and the most understanding generation, because we are the last generation that listened to their parents.

And we are also the first ones who were forced to listen to their children.~

Alexander the Great with his sister.

According to a myth, Alexander the Great had a stepsister from his father’s side, King Phillip (359-336 B.C.).

Her name was Thessaloniki.

There are many versions of this folk legend, but it begins with Alexander searching for the water of immortality.

In one version, Thessaloniki drinks the water of immortality before her brother on purpose, and so he curses her and she turns into a mermaid.

In another version, she drinks the water accidentally and is transformed into a mermaid out of her own sorrow.

According to a third version, Thessaloniki found the water and brought it to Alexander, but he offered it to her.

Despite the variations, the end of the myth is always the same.

wanders into the sea and whenever she sees a ship, she asks: “Sailor, sailor, is King alive?”

If the sailor gives her a positive answer, she swims away happily.

But if the answer is negative, she sinks the ship, kills all its sailors, and creates a sea storm from her tears.

The traditional Igbo house structure was pre-dominantly round-wall mud houses (ulo aja oto) with thatched roofs (aju or atani). The roofing–a pitched roofing, was the commonest design found across the pre-colonial Igbo communities.

Igbo art is noted for Mbari architecture. Mbari houses of the Igbos are largely opened-sided square planned shelters. They house many life-sized, painted figures, sculpted in mud to appease the Alusi (deity) and Ala, the earth goddess, with other deities of thunder and water.

The study reveals that traditional Igbo architecture is a product of physical and cultural factors, some of which are peculiar to Igboland and society. These factors create architectural problems and also provide some means of solving them. The physical environment, for instance, causes the problem of rain, heat and humidity, but provides mud, timber, bamboo and palms for house building. Similarly the Igbo world-view imposes a philosophy which constrains ordering in the physical world to mirror a conceptual ideal one. Again, this provides a theoretical principle by which the Igbo order architectural elements in the physical setting. The traditional architecture, therefore, directly relates to their environment and long-established customs and way of life. Colonization and the ensuing transplantation of foreign architecture have, however, undermined it and created problems.

From the pictures below, can the traditional architecture of the Igbo in Nigeria be considered equivalent to other Westen world visual arts.
