The richest man in the world is now on the hunt for skilled individuals to join the team at rocket and satellite company SpaceX, in roles which will build out data centers both on Earth and—potentially—on other planets.

In an interview with The Economist, Elon Musk shared his perspective on what happens to his companies when he is no longer there, using Apple as a prime example:

"If you look at Apple after Steve Jobs, Steve Jobs had a strategic vision and a bunch of products that he had ideas for, and Apple has done very well. But when you don’t have a creative genius like Steve Jobs, what you miss... are the incredible breakthrough products. They make amazing phones, great computers, but Apple hasn’t come up with a Steve Jobs-level breakthrough product."

Musk believes Tesla and SpaceX have solid roadmaps mapped out for years to come. However, it will lack the creative genius to invent what comes after the roadmap, the kind of category-defining breakthroughs that only a true visionary brings to the table.

It begs a bigger question: Can a company stay revolutionary once its founder steps away?

Elon Musk earned the typical Tesla worker's annual pay every 4.23 seconds. The richest person in the world and CEO of tech and EV giant Tesla received $158.3 billion in compensation last year.

His pay was 2,522,203 times higher than the median Tesla's employee pay of $57,243 annually, according to an executive paywatch analysis from America's largest federation of labor unions, AFL-CIO.

During a typical 30-minute commute, he's already banked $24.36 million in compensation.

To put the inequality into context, while Musk is earning 2.5 million times more than his workforce, the average S&P CEO earns 312 times their workers.

Including Musk, S&P 500 leaders earned an average of around $340 million last year, a roughly 1,700% increase from 2024; but take him out of the equation, and the average CEO pay at S&P 500 companies increased 21% to $22.8 million last year.
