The Lion Also Fears
In the beginning, when the forest was still young, the lion was the proud ruler of all the beasts. His mane shone like fire, and his roar echoed across hills and valleys. Wherever he walked, the earth seemed to tremble. The gazelle fled, the zebra scattered, and even the elephant gave way when the lion passed.
Because of this, many animals believed the lion feared nothing under the sun. They whispered, “See how he walks as if he owns the world. Surely his heart knows no fear.”
But one day, under the shade of the great iroko tree, the wise tortoise gathered the animals and said,
> “Do not be deceived. The lion also fears. Even the strongest heart bows before something greater.”
The animals laughed at him. “Old man,” said the monkey, “your shell has made you slow. You speak only because you do not know the strength of the lion.”
The tortoise kept quiet, only smiling, for wisdom does not quarrel.
Not long after, men entered the forest. They came with fire, spears, and drums that thundered louder than any roar. The smoke rose high, and their songs filled the night. When the lion heard, his mighty chest grew heavy. He did not roar to shake the sky. He did not charge into the fire. Instead, he lowered himself into the tall grass and waited silently, his golden eyes watching every shadow.
The animals were shocked. “Why does the king hide?” the monkey asked.
The tortoise spoke again,
> “You see now with your own eyes. The lion also fears. But his fear is not weakness. It is wisdom. He knows that fire burns even the strongest skin, and the hunter’s spear pierces even the bravest heart. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is walking wisely with it.”
From that night, the animals learned that every creature — no matter how strong — has something it fears. The river fears the sun that dries it, the sun fears the night that hides it, and the night fears the dawn that ends it
