CONJUNCTIVITIS: A NOTE TO PARENTS AND THE SCHOOL
Due to climate change, the harmattan season in recent years has been quite unusual and very irregular as well. A common ailment during the harmattan season is conjunctivitis (pink eye) popularly known as Apollo. It is an inflammation of the white part of the eye (the conjunctiva), caused by bacteria, virus or irritants like smoke, dust, dirt, shampoo. It occurs more during the harmattan period and it is very contagious if not treated.
The settings and activities in the school is characterized by maintenance of close human contact by school members (pupil and staff) – morning assembly, circle time, sitting arrangement,https://bonncaroleducational.com/2021/03/01/conjunctivitis-a-note-to-parents-and-the-school/

Games and sports are cardinal aspects of a complete educational offering. An educational endeavour that makes little or no provision for games/sports is a highly defective one. Both sports and games have goals, are rule bound and competitive, so weaving them into the fabric of the school curriculum is a practical way to teaching young learners discipline, focus, team play, regard for rules/individuals and the culture of taking turns. https://bonncaroleducational.com/2021/02/18/playing-mental-games/

“Teach Chizalum to read. Teach her to love books. The best way is by causal example. If she sees you reading, she will understand that reading is valuable. If she were not to go to school, and merely just read books, she would arguably become more knowledgeable than a conventionally educated child. Books will help her understand and question the world, help her express herself, and help her in whatever she wants to become – a chef, a scientist, a singer, all benefit from the skills that reading brings. I do not mean school books. I mean books that have nothing to do with school, autobiographies and novels and histories. If all else fails, pay her to read. Reward her. I know this remarkable Nigerian woman, Angela, a single mother who was raising her child in the United States; her child did not take to reading so she decided to pay her five cents per page. An expensive endeavour, she later joked, but a worthy investment.”

Dear Ijeawele by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

THE SOCIALIZATION PROCESS: THE HOME IS CRUCIAL
The progress in life that has been made by parents and every other adult are testaments to what we can achieve via education. Education as implied here does not mean the brand obtained from the conventional school, but the type that we imbibe from the entire socialization process of which the school is one of the components. The entire socialization agents collage to make us what we are. The first educational platform of a child is the home.
The home is crucial to the complete formation and socialization of children. The home leads a child to school and directs a child to build faith in religion.https://bonncaroleducational.com/2021/02/11/socialization-the-home-is-very-crucial/

As most schools in Nigeria reopened for the second term of the 2020/2021 session, let us not lose sight of the lessons of the last year or two.

Our style of education needs rejigging and across every level; from the early years to the tertiary and even postgraduate. Relevant stakeholders (parents, educators, administrators, government, private operators, etc) please take note. Can we review our content? Can we take a second look at our current educational style of note copying? Can we also address our fe**sh for raw scores (whether high or low)? Yes, we can.

As the school gates and class doors open once again, let us think about our content. Let us cut down on the excessive note copying. Learning can be interesting when it is more practical. Education can be more effective when the content is relevant and thus useful.

Education equips learners to be useful to themselves and to society, raw scores doesn’t. The goal of education is to develop character, capacities and manual dexterities of learners. In other words, education is more than just raw scores because raw scores do not say so much.

Welcome back to school.
