UNIZIK Ranked Joint 4th in Nigeria in THE World University Rankings 2027

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has recorded an upward move in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, placing joint 4th in Nigeria. The university had remained in the same band for more than five years.

Prof. George Uchenna Eleje, Chairman of the Senate Committee on University Ranking, congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, for his all-round support in improving the university's ranking. "We will get better in the coming years," he said.
UNIZIK was one of seven Nigerian universities to record a clear upward move. The others are Covenant University, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ilorin, Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University and University of Benin.

THE released the rankings on 30 September 2026 at the World Academic Summit, hosted by the University of Cape Town. The 2027 edition is the largest yet, covering 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, up from 2,191 institutions in 2026.

The University of Oxford retained first place for the eleventh consecutive year, just 0.1 points ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tsinghua University rose to 11th, the highest position yet for an Asian institution. Three Asian universities now sit in the global top 15 for the first time.

Nigeria is the most represented country in sub-Saharan Africa, with 29 ranked universities out of 69 in the sub-region (42.0 per cent). This is up from 24 in the 2026 edition, with five new entrants.

A further 32 Nigerian universities are in the Reporter category, bringing the total to 61.
Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos share first place nationally in the 801–1000 world band.

Covenant moved up from the 1001–1200 band to rejoin the other two. Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin are in the 1001–1200 band, bringing the number of Nigerian universities within the global top 1,200 to seven.

UNIZIK Confucius Institute garners13th Global Honour

As Nigerian Secondary School Student Wins Global Third Prize at “Chinese Bridge

It’s a Season of Harvests for UNIZIK Confucius Institute. On September 21, 2026, the Global Finals of the 19th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students, involving 124 contestants from different countries, ended at Tianjin Radio and Television Station in China.


Nigeria's representative, Justina Uchechi Michael (Chinese name: Mai Yalan), a 17-year-old student from the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK CI), posted an outstanding performance and ultimately won the "Global Third Prize".

Her coach, Qin Fangfang, was also honored with the “Outstanding Instructor Award.” This marks the second time this year that Qin has received the honor, following her recognition at the “Chinese Bridge” competition for university students in August.

What makes Justina’s achievement particularly remarkable is that she has learned Chinese for less than 18 months, and this was her first time participating in an international competition of such scale and intensity. Competing against outstanding students from around the world, she successfully advanced through several rounds to reach the Global Top 30.

Notably, Justina was the only contestant among the Global Top 30 who had studied Chinese for less than two years. The other five African contestants who reached the Top 30 had all studied Chinese for more than four years, with one of them participating in the global “Chinese Bridge” competition for the second time.

For a 17-year-old student with less than 18 months of Chinese-language study, such an achievement is particularly impressive. It reflects not only Justina’s dedication and hard work, but also the solid results UNIZIK CI has achieved through years of sustained efforts in Chinese-language teaching, cultural exchange, competition training, and the cultivation of internationally oriented young talents.

This autumn has truly been a season of harvest for UNIZIK CI . Together with Miss Faith Emmanuel Mba’s global third prize in the “Chinese Bridge” Competition for College Students in August, the institute have now won two global third prizes in the “Chinese Bridge” competitions this year.

Since 2018, 13 contestants from UNIZIK CI have represented Nigeria at the global finals of the “Chinese Bridge” competitions in China, and all 13 have successfully reached the Global Top 30 — an outstanding record of 13 appearances and 13 Top-30 finishes. Among them, six have won Global Third Prizes, four have won Global First Prizes, and three have been crowned African Champions. This consistent record of excellence has earned UNIZIK CI a highly visible presence on the global “Chinese Bridge” stage.

According to Prof Zhang Aiwu, Teacher of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria, a single success may sometimes involve an element of chance, but excellence sustained year after year can only come from long-term dedication, commitment, and perseverance.

“These honors not only chronicle the inspiring journeys of generations of young Nigerians learning Chinese and discovering China, but also bear witness to the fruitful achievements of UNIZIK CI in advancing international Chinese-language education and strengthening people-to-people and cultural exchanges between Nigeria and China” he stated..

The deadline for the 2026/2027 Intra-University Transfer Application at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, earlier scheduled for Friday, 18th September, 2026, has been extended to Wednesday, 30th September, 2026.

All interested students who are yet to complete their applications are advised to take advantage of the extension and submit their applications before the new deadline.

CKOi OKUNENYEIFE FOUNDATION DONATES N5M FOR RECONSTRUCTION OF UNIZIK MEDICAL CENTRE WALKWAY PAVILION

The Charles Kene Ojukwu Initiative Okunenyeife Foundation has donated N5 million to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, for the reconstruction of the walkway pavilion linking the old Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Medical Centre with the newly constructed University Medical Centre building.

The strategic donation was facilitated by the Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor on New Media, Mr Ekene Prosper Ezeumeanya, ahead of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) accreditation exercise. Ezeumeanya had earlier officially introduced the UNIZIK alumnus and Canada-based medical doctor and philanthropist, Dr Charles Kenechukwu Ojukwu, to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, following Dr Ojukwu's earlier support for UNIZIK TV. Speaking during the presentation at the Vice-Chancellor's Office, the Manager of the CKOi Okunenyeife Foundation, Mr Sylvester Ojiugo, and Dr Chibuike Abunike, a lecturer at the University and confidant of Dr Ojukwu, presented the N5 million donation on behalf of the Foundation's founder.

The Foundation had, during Dr Ojukwu's visit to the University in June 2026, pledged to support the institution, particularly the development and upgrading of the University Medical Centre. The latest donation represents the fulfilment of part of that pledge.

Dr Abunike stated that the donation was one of several interventions Dr Ojukwu intends to make in support of his alma mater, noting that the philanthropist had remained accessible and interested in initiatives capable of contributing meaningfully to the development of the University.

Dr Ojukwu is a British-trained Consultant Family Physician based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He has expressed his desire to deploy his professional expertise and philanthropic resources towards supporting institutional development and healthcare infrastructure.

The CKOi Okunenyeife Foundation is an NGO focused on community health insurance, scholarships, youth empowerment and other development initiatives across Anambra State, while also supporting strategic institutional projects.

In her vote of thanks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Hilda Osisioma, expressed the University's appreciation to the Foundation for redeeming its pledge and supporting the development of the Medical Centre.

The Director of Medical Services, Dr Jane Ezeonu, also appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for creating an enabling environment for partnerships and collaborations, while expressing gratitude to Dr Ojukwu for his generosity and support towards the University Medical Centre.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, joined the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in expressing the University's appreciation to the donor. He stated that UNIZIK remained on a progressive path under his administration and would continue to welcome development partners, alumni and friends of the University who are willing to contribute to its growth and advancement.

The reconstruction of the walkway pavilion is expected to improve connectivity and ease of movement between the old and new Medical Centre buildings, providing greater convenience for staff, students, patients and visitors to the facilities.

The intervention further underscores the growing role of UNIZIK alumni and development partners in supporting the University's infrastructure and institutional development agenda.
