“I MARRIED THE MAN EVERYONE CALLED MAD TO SAVE MY MOTHER”
EPISODE 1 — THE STRANGE PROPOSAL
The day I agreed to marry a man everyone called mad, I had only ₦2,500 in my bank account.
My name is Nneka. I was 23 years old, and my mother was lying helplessly in a hospital bed.
The doctors said she needed an urgent operation. Without it, her condition could become worse.
I had begged relatives, borrowed money, and even sold my belongings.
Nothing was enough.
Then one afternoon, a black SUV stopped in front of our small compound.
An elderly man stepped out.
"Are you Nneka?" he asked.
"Yes, sir."
"My name is Chief Obiora. I heard about your mother's condition. I can pay for everything."
I nearly fell to my knees.
"Thank you, sir! God will bless you!"
He raised his hand.
"Don't thank me yet. I need something in return."
My smile disappeared.
"What is it, sir?"
"I want you to marry my son."
I stared at him.
"Your son?"
"Yes. His name is Damian. He's 29 years old."
"Why would you want someone like me to marry your son, sir?"
The man looked away.
"Because nobody else wants to marry him."
My heart started beating faster.
"Why?"
He remained silent for some seconds.
Then he said quietly, "People believe my son is mentally unstable."
I stood there, speechless.
He continued.
"You will live comfortably. Your mother will receive the best treatment. You will never have to worry about money again."
I wanted to refuse.
But that evening, when I returned to the hospital, my mother held my hand and whispered,
"Nneka, I don't want to leave you alone in this world."
That night, I cried until morning.
Three days later, I accepted Chief Obiora's proposal.
Our wedding was small.
And for the first time, I saw Damian.
He was tall, handsome, and surprisingly calm.
But he didn't smile.
He barely looked at anyone throughout the ceremony.
When we arrived at his father's mansion, the workers avoided my eyes.
One elderly maid secretly pulled me aside.
"My daughter, be very careful in this house."
Before I could ask why, she hurried away.
That night, I sat nervously on the edge of our enormous bed.
Damian stood by the window, staring into the darkness.
Suddenly, he turned around.
"Nneka."
I froze.
It was the first time he had called my name.
"Yes?"
He walked towards me and leaned closer.
Then he whispered something that made my entire body go cold.
Whatever happens in this house, never trust the woman who calls herself my mother."**
Before I could respond, someone knocked on our bedroom door.
A woman's voice called from outside.
"Damian, my son. Open the door. It's Mummy."
I looked at my husband.
For the first time that evening, I saw fear in his eyes.
