Detailed Stages of the Plastic Recycling Process

• Collection: Plastic waste is gathered from residential, commercial, or industrial sources through curbside collection, deposit-refund programs, or drop-off centers.

• Sorting: Plastics are sorted by polymer type (e.g., PET #1, HDPE #2) and color. Machines like Near-Infrared (NIR) sensors are used, but manual picking is still common for precision, as color-mixed plastics are less valuable.

• Washing: Sorted plastic is thoroughly washed to remove contaminants such as labels, food residue, adhesives, and adhesives, which can weaken the final product.

• Shredding/Grinding: Cleaned plastic is fed into shredders that break it down into small pieces known as flakes.

• Processing (Melting/Pelletizing): Shredded plastic is melted down (often at 150–320 °C) and extruded into small, uniform pellets known as nurdles.

• Manufacturing: These pellets are sold to manufacturers to create new products (e.g., bottles, clothing fiber, plastic lumber).
