Hot take: closing your books late every quarter isn't a small habit. It's quietly one of the most expensive things you're doing to your business.
Here's the compounding effect nobody talks about:

❌ Late closes mean late decisions. You're always reacting to last quarter's numbers, never actually planning around this one.

❌ Errors pile up uncaught. Nothing's being reviewed in real time, so small mistakes sit and grow for months.

❌ Tax season becomes a reconstruction project. Instead of filing from clean, closed books, you're rebuilding a quarter from scratch under pressure.

❌ You lose your early warning system. Problems and opportunities are easiest to act on while they're still small. Late closes mean you spot them late, too.

None of this feels dramatic in the moment you skip a close. That's exactly why it's dangerous; it compounds quietly, every single quarter, until it isn't small anymore.

We're offering free discovery sessions where we'll look at your current close process and show you exactly where the gaps are, no pressure, just clarity.

“I just need my tax filed.”
We've heard it before.

But sometimes, when you look underneath the tax filing, there's a bigger issue:
The books aren't ready.
That's why tax compliance shouldn't begin at the filing stage.

It starts with having financial records that are properly organized and reliable.

Akkant helps businesses work through the foundation first, then move into the relevant tax and compliance requirements.

And with Nigeria's current tax framework now administered by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), staying organized is more important than ever.

Don't wait until a filing deadline to discover your books need attention.

After years of handling books across almost every industry: retail, hospitality, services, tech, you start noticing something: the "unique" problems aren't actually that unique. The same 5 patterns show up, again and again. 👇

1️⃣ Late invoicing. The longer you wait to bill, the longer you wait to get paid, a delay that's entirely self-created and entirely avoidable.

2️⃣ Ignoring receivables. "They'll pay eventually" is a hope, not a strategy. Unpaid invoices left untracked quietly become bad debt.

3️⃣ No reserve fund. Even genuinely thriving businesses get shaken by one slow month, simply because there's no buffer built in.

4️⃣ DIY-ing the books too long. Understandable in year one. Costly by year three, once errors and missed deadlines start adding up.

5️⃣ Reacting instead of planning. Almost every financial "emergency" we get called into was actually visible in the numbers months before it became urgent.

Recognise any of these in your own business? You're genuinely not alone, and none of them are permanent.

5 completely real strategies we've watched business owners actually try. Please, for the love of your bottom line, do not add any of these to your playbook. 😅

1️⃣ Vibes-based pricing: "it just feels like ₦15k, you know?" (Reader, it does not "feel like" anything. Do the math.)

2️⃣ Guess-timating tax: "I'll figure it out in December" (December arrives faster than expected, every single year.)

3️⃣ Hope as a cash flow strategy: "something will come in before rent is due" (This is not a plan. This is a prayer.)

4️⃣ Reading your bank balance instead of your books: treating "there's money in the account" as the full financial picture.

5️⃣ "I'll check the numbers when business slows down": a moment that, statistically, never actually arrives.

Swipe through; if you're laughing because it's a little too accurate, that's your sign. None of this actually works long-term. Real growth is built on real numbers.

This founder genuinely had no idea he'd been paying himself twice in the same month, for months. It wasn't fraud. It wasn't carelessness. It was just what happens when there's no system tracking your own draws. 😳

The problem: Personal and business accounts were mixed, with no defined pay structure. He'd withdraw cash whenever he needed it, and without anything tracking those draws, he'd occasionally forget he'd already taken money out that month and withdraw again.

What we did:
1️⃣ Separated his accounts
2️⃣ Reviewed 6 full months of transaction history, line by line
3️⃣ Traced the duplicate draws back to their source
4️⃣ Built him a fixed pay structure, same amount, same date, every single month

The result: For the first time, total clarity on what the business actually pays him, and what it genuinely keeps in profit.

If you're not 100% sure what you take out of your business every month, this is worth checking. It's more common than founders like to admit. Swipe through the full story 👉

If every single naira your business touches passes through one account, it's basically impossible to know what's actually happening financially. Sales, tax money, payroll, savings, all tangled together, disappearing at the same speed they arrived.

Here's the fix: 4 accounts, each with one job.
1️⃣ Operating Account — day-to-day income and expenses. This is the account you touch most.

2️⃣ Tax Savings Account — a fixed percentage of every payment goes here automatically, so when tax is due, it's already covered

3️⃣ Payroll Account — keeps salary obligations protected from cash flow swings elsewhere in the business.

4️⃣ Profit/Reserve Account — a genuine cushion for slow months, and a place profit can actually accumulate instead of quietly being absorbed into daily spending.

This isn't complicated banking; it's just structure. And structure is what makes cash flow feel manageable instead of stressful.

Which of these do you already have? Be honest in the comments 👇

Quick, honest question: has your business account ever paid for something that had absolutely nothing to do with the business? No judgment, this is more common than not. But it's worth understanding what it's actually costing you.

Mixing personal and business money feels convenient in the moment. It creates real problems later:

❌ Tax confusion — you can't accurately calculate what's owed when personal spending is tangled into business transactions.

❌ Legal exposure — mixing funds can quietly strip away the legal protection your business structure was supposed to give you.

❌ An inaccurate profit picture — you genuinely won't know if the business itself is profitable, versus just "cash is available right now."

The good news: this is fixable in a week, not a year.
1️⃣ Open a dedicated business bank account (if you haven't already)
2️⃣ Pay yourself a fixed amount, on a fixed schedule, not ad hoc withdrawals
3️⃣ Route every single business expense through the business account only

Small shift. Massive clarity. Swipe for the full breakdown 👉

Save this post; you'll want it at the end of every month.

We ask every client the same question when something's gone wrong financially: "When did you last check X?" And almost always, the answer is "a while ago." Not because they're careless, just because nobody built the habit of checking regularly.

So here's your monthly finance checklist. Four items, about 15 minutes total:
☐ Reconcile all bank accounts
☐ Review statutory remittances, tax and pension
☐ Check outstanding receivables
☐ Review your overall cash position

That's it. It won't feel like much in the moment. But businesses that run through this every single month rarely get blindsided, and the ones that skip it are usually the ones firefighting come tax season.

Save this now so it's there when the month rolls around. ✅

Here's a finance word every business owner needs to know:
Liquidity.

Imagine your business has ₦10m worth of sales for the year.
Sounds great, right?
But customers haven't paid you yet.

Meanwhile, salaries, suppliers, and bills are due.
Your business may be profitable on paper, but if you don't have enough cash available to meet short-term obligations, you have a liquidity problem.

That's why cash flow matters.
