As a tenant, you’re only entitled to a Notice to Quit during the subsistence of your tenancy. Once your tenancy expires, you are only entitled to a 7 days owners intention to recover possession.

Even the Notice to Quit is dependent on what is stated in your tenancy Agreement.

We tell our clients this all the time: to avoid spending more money in the future to build a legal structure for your business, start early, start on time!

Start with registering your business, then trademark it, get the required licenses, sign all the necessary agreements and legal paper work, have your lawyer on speed dial all the time.

If you can afford to do all this at once, then do it before starting your business or as you start. Don’t wait until these agencies come knocking on your door with fines and penalties before you do.

If you cannot do them all at once, then do them one after the other, but quickly.

Don’t wait until your personal bank account is frozen for unexplained large sums being deposited before you start running around. It will cost you more then!

Ekaete just finished printing her branded bags and complimentary cards. She posted it on her WhatsApp status and her friend Uwem asked her if she had registered her business and she said not yet. She was planning to register it in a few months.

Uwem screamed and told her she had made a mistake but she should come to us first and we may be able to help her.

So Ekaete paid us to register her business name but when we conducted a search, we discovered that the name she wanted had already been registered. What will she now do with all the nylons she had branded and the cards she had printed?

This has been the situation with most of our clients lately.

One of the mistakes that most business owners make is to start using a name that they haven’t first registered.
