7 business lessons young Africans can learn from Nigerian billionaire and banking tycoon Jim Ovia

1. Start local but think global
Jim Ovia started Zenith Bank with a branch in Lagos at a residential duplex shared with a private tenant. The building did not resemble an office or a bank at all, he said. However, that unassuming duplex was the starting point of a London stock exchange-listed company with operations worldwide. With this, he says, "it's not necessary to be born rich or in an influential circle to achieve success. The path to success is accessible to every young person regardless of background, family income or education. If I can do it, you can too."

2. Follow your instincts
Jim Ovia believes that the most crucial skill to becoming successful is the ability to listen to your guts. During his university days, Ovia developed a curiosity for computers and wanted to study computer science, but his college advisor conceived him to study Business Management and Administration. He had the gut instinct that this technology was the key to the future of all business, so he always snuck into the university's computer rooms to learn whenever he had the chance. Years later, when setting up his business, even though there was no internet in Nigeria, he prioritised incorporating digital technology and internet capacity. According to him, "What determines whether a great idea can ever come to fruition is the initial will to act on instincts. When instincts is successfully followed, confidence and self-esteem grow exponentially."

3. Follow the road less travelled
To become successful, you must have the courage to forge your path and take the less travelled road instead of the well-beaten path, Ovia said in his book. It is on such paths that your personality is truly tested, and on such paths lies the potential of higher reward.

4. Develop your negotiating and networking skills
Ovia, in his book, also told a story of how he started a used car sales business during his NYSC days in Nigeria. "After I found a mechanic to fix a beat-up car my uncle gave me, I discovered that there were many beat-up cars available for sale. I would buy these cars, get the mechanic to refurbish them, and then sell them at a higher price. Sometimes I would sell these cars for double and even triple the price I had paid for them." According to Ovia, the most valuable lesson in this story was discovering and developing his ability to negotiate with the original car owner, the mechanic and the buyer. Ovia recalled that this skill played out when he negotiated a banking license for his business. "Candidates were required to have at least 20 years of banking experience, and I only had 10 years of experience under my belt. I was unqualified on many fronts, but I negotiated my application to be granted. Showing respect and understanding of the person with whom you are dealing creates an underlying sense of trust, and trust is the rocket fuel of negotiation."

5. Let the dots connect
While studying abroad, Ovia got a night job as a computer operator. This experience offered him insights into how an American bank was using data processing technology to its advantage. Ovia also put his MBA knowledge to work during NYSC, writing feasibility studies for companies and selling refurbished cars. He later got a job as a financial analyst at a bank. "All of these experiences, he said, prepared me for bigger things to come. Do not take the little opportunities of today for granted. You will never know when those experiences will play to your advantage. Diligently do what you have to do today; the dots will connect tomorrow."

6. build your network and help others succeed
according to ovia, every entrepreneur or professional needs to place more value in who you know than in what you have. a good entrepreneur sees a potential ally in everyone. establish your network one person at a time by being reliable and patient. pave the way instead of burning the bridges.

7. Return the kindness
Ovia believes that being invested in a sustainable future in your community is the activity that determines whether a venture is a flash in the pan or a foundation worthy of an empire.

"The boy I was once was, growing up without a father, might never have looked beyond the confines of the town I grew up in, were it not for one crucial factor - Education! This inspired me to create the Jim Ovia Foundation, which offers scholarships to students and young Nigerians."

DO THIS TO HELP YOUR BRAIN

Dear Friends,

Let's talk about how you can help your brain to help you.
Do you know that your brain wants to help you?
Really...
Just that it doesn't know how.

Over thousands of years, your brain has been naturally programmed to help you do 2 things successfully.

1. Survive

2. Reproduce.

Survive:

Your brain alerts you of dangers.

It warns you when you are about to take risks or do new things.

It forces you to get the basic things of life that are enough for you to survive.

Food, water, cloting, shelter.

Reproduce:

Your brain wants you to pass on your genes to the next generattion just like your ancestors did.

That is why men get naturally attracted to a woman that looks fertile.

And women get attracted to a man that looks like a provider.

But you know what?

These 2 things:

Survive and Reproduce are not enough to move you to the next level.

In fact, if you operate solely based on these basic responsibilities of your brain, you will be like "the masses"

What do the masses do?

They go to school.

Get a certificate that allows them to get a job.

That is because the job allows them to get the basic things of life.

Food, water, clothing, shelter etc

Then, what do they do next?

They get married.

And they have kids.

Some have plenty kids.

And they spend the rest of their lives just surviving.

Playing safe.

Taking zero risks.

Even their brain goes to half sleep at this point.

It has helped them to survive and reproduce.

But what about THRIVE?

What about PROSPER?

Our brains wasn't programmed to do things that will make you prosper.

And the reason is:

Things that help you prosper are usually things that are risky and difficult.

So, your brain raises an alarm each time you are about to do such.

So, what do people who prosper do?

They FORCE their brains to get used to the activites that bring prosperity.

When their brains wants to waste time on social media, they force it to read a book.

The brain cries.

But it does it anyway.

Now they see an online course that could help improve their lives.

They want to buy it.

Once again, the brain says:

Why don't we spend that money on a playstation instead and play nice games instead?

But they go ahead and purchase the online course.

Now, that is another wahala because the brain doesn't want to sit down and study an online course.

Not when there are thousands of movies on Netflix it can watch.

Or thousands of comedy skis and dog videos on Youtube and tiktok.

So, the brain tries to stop them from going through the course.

But they force the lazy brain to study it.

At this point, Mr brain is sweating and crying so bad.

But it is also getting used to this.

When you keep doing this, your brain eventually starts getting used to this.

Then it accepts it.

And it even starts pushing you to do more.

That is how you help your brain to help you.

Again...

Paschal, don't just survive and reproduce like what majority of people do.

I want you to THRIVE and PROSPER.

May God help us all.

My wife recently said, “I love your confidence. It’s hot.”

I wasn't always confident, this is how I changed.

• Be firm in your decisions.

Be calculated.
Look at all angles.
But when you decide, own it.

• Stand for something.

Don’t hesitate on your beliefs.

If you believe in something, don’t let the crowd sway you.

• Be strong mentally.

Get up early, before anyone else.

Read every day.

Never stop learning.

Feeding your mind feeds your confidence.

• Be strong physically.

If you have to lose weight, lose weight, but lifting weights is a non-negotiable.

Build a strong jawline.

When a woman feels protected, she has confidence in you and that confidence grows your confidence.

• Don’t bow to fear.

Take calculated risks but don’t bow down.

Flip the script and search fear out.

Make a list of everything you’re scared of and hunt every single one of them down.

Fear is a liar.

• Be adventurous.

Nothing gives you confidence like rappelling down a waterfall or skydiving or climbing a volcano.

Make a list of adventures. Pick them off one by one. You’ll be surprised how fast they stack up.

Adventures grow massive confidence.

• Never talk negatively about yourself.

Never.

If there’s something you need to improve, make a plan and execute it.

Sooner than later.

Be self-aware and be intentional about making necessary changes.

• Take responsibility.

Admit when you’re wrong.

On the face of it, this seems weak. It’s not. It shows serious strength.

Weak men don’t admit when they’re wrong. They’ll argue to the death.

• Become a storyteller.

Learn to tell stories well. Tell about your adventures.

Notice when people react and when they’re bored. Adjust your story.

This will get you through social situations like an alpha male.

• Don’t compare yourself.

Confident people don’t compete with others.

They set goals and methodically work towards those goals, without announcing every move.

Confident men compare themselves to the person they were yesterday.

• Be compassionate.

Your confidence grows when you help others. Especially those who can’t help themselves.

Train your mind to always be on the lookout for those in need.

• Surround yourself with quality friends.

When your friends are interesting, educated and confident, it raises your game in all areas.

Don't confuse confident friends with jackasses. Fake confidence leaves clues.

Growing confidence makes you a man, not a jackass.

• Be generous and kind.

Tip the hell out of your waitress. She should always ask if you meant to leave that much.

It does two things.

It demonstrates that everyone has value regardless of their job and it’s living from a stance of abundance.

This is a confidence machine.

• Protect those who need protecting.

Never ever be the guy watching a bully yell at or physically assault someone.

Stand for the oppressed. Care for the widow. Adopt the orphan.

Most people aren't born confident but anyone can become confident.

The Strongest Advice from the Richest Man Ever

Many people believe that King Solomon is the richest man ever in the history of the world.

I am not here to debate if that is true or not.

What I want to share with you today is a piece of advice he gave which I consider to be the strongest.

You will find this piece of advice in Proverbs 4:23 where he said:

"Guard your heart with all diligence because from out of it flows the issues of life."

You can see that he wasn't referring to just money.

He said "issues of life"

That can be joy, sadness, success, failure, depression, wealth, poverty etc

He was basically saying whatever you program into your mind will undoubtedly be expressed in your lives – in positive or negative ways.

That is why I have been talking to you about your mindset.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THIS ADVICE

But, if you do, I can guarantee you'll live a happier, productive, and more fulfilled life. This article is inspired by 3 tweets I came across on Twitter saying the same thing.

I really think a lot of youngsters like me have misunderstood the whole thing about working hard…
And building your finances while you're still young.

The leading cause of depression among youths today is the pressure to have everything figured out right now.

And the fact is: you can't!
You're still in your twenties for God's sake.
Stop putting yourself under undue pressure to succeed right now because it really doesn't happen overnight!

I'm probably not the best person to talk about this but I think it's worth it that I share what I'm learning too.
You see life is in phases and the older you get and the more things you try…
The closer you get to that dream life you want to kill yourself for now.

You'll not suddenly wake up tomorrow and find the millions in your bank account…
And you can't hit the 10-million-goal without moving through 100k, 200k, 500k, 1 million…

So, just relax, keep your mind focused and enjoy the process.
In fact, my goal when I started affiliate marketing was to make just 100k a month to be able to quit my 30k stressful job.

You see, others may be doing better than you at the moment…
It doesn't make you a loser.

Maybe they just started way before you did…

Or they've learned a lot of stuff you haven't yet.
My advice to you is…

Figure out what the best people are doing…
Start doing the same things…

Give it time...
And don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself.

Focus on the process and not the result.
Just a word of advice for you this evening.

Go crush skulls!
Stay focused,

How I SOLD MY FIRST DIGITAL PRODUCT
I sold my first 100,000 digital product using the 6 Part P.A.S.T.O.R Framework by Ray Edwards.

I wasn't a Copywriting pro. I just discovered the framework and applied it in my copy.

Here's a breakdown of the P.A.S.T.O.R Framework

Before you dive in...

Pause and Think Am I a person of Value?

Thanks. Let's go!!!

1. Problem

At the beginning of the copy. Describe the problem your product is solving.

You must be very vivid and clear so they feel the emotion you're conveying

e.g Are you tired of freelancing? Do you spend HOURS upon HOURS scrolling through Upwork looking for a client?
As the great copywriting legend Robert Collier said, you have to “join the conversation that is already taking place in the reader’s mind.”

Note: You must be very clear and use words that your readers uses on a day to day

2. Amplify/Agitate

Here you Amplify the consequences of not solving the problems you talked about at the beginning of the copy

e.g 97% of newbie Freelancers who start out on upwork without a guide end up giving up or charging as little as 2,000naira for a long sales copy

3. Story/Solution

Share the story of how the problem can be solved

It can be your own story. Or a client you've helped. Or an imaginary avatar

e.g Matthew was a high school drop out whose parents had lost faith in..he started freelancing on upwork and made 0 naira in his 1st month
He had to move out from his home to his girlfriend's basement. He was frustrated until he decided to try blah blah blah...

Just invented this off the top of my head (we can do better)

4. Transformation/Testimony

Your prospects are asking themselves these:

•Has this person been able to do what he's describing for himself?
•Has this person been able to teach other people to achieve these results?
•Will this person be able to teach me how to achieve these?

You must make sure you answer these 3 questions

Make sure your copy is filled with 70% Testimonies

Offer testimony. Real-life stories of people. Case studies

5. Offer

This is the Crux of your copy. Where you show your potential buyers what they are getting for their money...

I usually use the heading:

"Here’s Exactly What You Get.”

Talk solely about the Transformation they'd be getting from your Product

Avoid listing benefits
5 Days Training w/ 10 zoom calls❌

Show you how to land your first $1000 client in 5 Days ✔️

6. Response

This is where you soft sell your potential buyers and tell them what to do next

e.g -If you're interested and you want to change your game. Click the button to get started Now!

-Ready to prove naysayers wrong and shock those who look down on you? Click get started!
