What is the prevalence ratio in
children?
The prevalence of asthma in children
is about five to 15 per cent. Most of
the time, it is noticed in very early
childhood. Asthma is not just one
particular disease condition; it is like
a spectrum, a range of conditions.
There are different types of severity.
Cases of asthma in children between
ages two to six is commonest, while
the least percentage one finds is
between 12 and 16 years, when
majority of them would have
outgrown it. Those who still have
asthma at that teenage age are likely
to have it into adulthood. About 60
per cent of children with asthma are
less than six years; the remaining 40
per cent will be in children between
seven years to 16 years of age.
What are the symptoms of asthma in
children?
Some of these include, if the child
has difficulty in breathing or
shortness of breath, cough, which is
worse at night, and he doesn’t have
fever, then you know it is not likely
to be pneumonia or an infection,
because asthma is not an infection.
Hereditary factor is also important to
know if a child is susceptible to
asthma. For example, if there is a
family history of asthma, that is, if
someone in that family is asthmatic
or has reactive conditions such as
particular allergies, it could lead to
asthma or what is also called hyper-
reactive airway disease. It also
depends on the degree of severity of
the asthma. But the first sign are
breathlessness and cough, and what
they call pigeon chest – the chest may
look bloated like that of a pigeon
because of air traffic, the child is
breathing air but can’t breathe it out.
Majority of children outgrow asthma
later in their teenage years.
What triggers asthma attacks?
The more industrialised a place is,
the higher the prevalence of asthma,
because areas with industrial/air
pollution trigger asthma. Also, the
more developed a place is, the more
likely they would have a higher rate
of asthma cases. For example, Lagos
would be expected to have a higher
rate of asthma cases

The Nigerian Thoracic Society has said
that about 100 million Nigerians will
suffer from asthma in 2025. According
to the organisation , the country has 15
million sufferers from the lung disease
out of over 400 million others believed
to be suffering from asthma worldwide .
The President of the society , Professor
Etete Peters, who said this on Tuesday
during his address to mark the 2016
Asthma Day with the theme, “ You can
control your asthma ,” opined that the
NTS had formulated a National Asthma
Guideline that would help avoid
unnecessary and preventable deaths.
Peters described asthma as one of the
most chronic lung diseases that affect
over 400 million people worldwide. He
added that in Nigeria , those suffering
from asthma accounted for 15 million
of the nation ’s population . He noted
that asthma was the most common
chronic disease in children.
“ It is typically characterised by
recurring respiratory symptoms , such
as coughing, wheezing , shortness of
breath and chest tightening. These
symptoms are variable and can
fluctuate for each individual over time.
“ Despite the availability of different
asthma drugs, a significant number of
asthma patients are still suffering from
asthma , while a sizeable number still
dies from the disease .
“ An estimated 75 per cent of hospital
admissions for asthma and as many as
90 per cent of the deaths are avoidable.
Nigeria has lost many gifted and
illustrious sons and daughters
prematurely due to asthma . This should
not be so ,” he said .
Peters, who is the Chief Medical
Director , University of Uyo Teaching
Hospital, said in Nigeria alone , about 15
million people might have asthma
based on numerous studies and also
with increasing urbanisation and
adoption of Western lifestyle. He said
that developing countries might have
rising incidence of the disease .
