This Page is dedicated to research writing.
In writing a very good research report, being consistent matters a lot. Especially when the report is an academic endeavour for a partial fulfilment of the pursuit of a degree.
The writer or researcher needs to be consistent with the use of English spellings. If he wants to use British English spelling, he must ensure not to mix it up with American English spelling and vice versa.
Also, there is need to be consistent in the style of referencing to be adopted. There are various styles of referencing among which are APA, MLA, HAVARD, UI, NEA etc. It is important for the researcher to stick to a style in writing or presenting his research report.
Moreover, there is need for consistency in the presentation of tables, figures and plates that are used in the research report. Tables may be labelled on top while figures and plates may be labelled below or vice versa. Tables, figures and plates should be numbered according to chapter and its number in the report. The important thing is they should follow the same style through out the report.
Lastly, there is need for consistency in the use of abbreviated words. The general rule is that such words must be first expressed fully and the abbreviation encased in parenthesis at the first mention under each chapter or section of the report. Thereafter, subsequent use may be expressed in abbreviation.
Being consistent helps reinforce the central point of the study and could give face validation to the report.
