Episode 7 — “The Twin They Hid From Me”
My hands started shaking violently.
I stared at the photograph again.
Then again.
Then again.
The little boy beside my parents looked exactly like me.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Same birthmark near the neck.
I looked up slowly at my mother, who was still suspended in the air struggling to breathe.
“Mama…”
My voice cracked.
“What does this mean?”
Tears rolled down her face immediately.
The creature wearing my father’s face smiled darkly.
“Tell him the truth.”
The tall black-clothed man shouted:
“Don’t listen to that thing!”
But it ignored him.
Its black eyes remained fixed on me.
“You were born as twins.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Hotter.
My chest tightened painfully.
“No…”
The creature pointed toward the photograph.
“Your brother did not die.”
My mother screamed loudly:
“STOP!”
Immediately she fell hard to the ground coughing violently.
I rushed toward her.
“Mama!”
She grabbed my face with trembling hands.
“Samuel… listen carefully… your brother was taken the night you were born.”
Everything inside me froze.
“Taken by who?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Then slowly…
The tall man removed a strange necklace from his neck.
On it was the same symbol carved into the wooden box.
“By the Order.”
Thunder exploded outside.
My mother cried harder.
“Your father agreed before you were born.”
I stepped back in horror.
“Agreed to WHAT?!”
The creature laughed softly.
“Power.”
Silence filled the room.
Then my mother finally confessed:
“Your father joined the society because we were poor.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“They promised wealth… protection… influence…”
The creature’s smile disappeared.
“But every blessing demanded blood.”
My stomach turned instantly.
The tall man spoke coldly:
“One child from every chosen bloodline belongs to the Order.”
I felt sick.
“So my father gave away my twin brother?!”
Nobody answered.
And that silence was enough.
I staggered backward in disbelief.
The creature suddenly growled angrily.
“I changed my mind after seeing what they truly were!”
The walls shook violently again.
“I tried to escape with both children.”
The tall man shouted:
“YOU BROKE THE COVENANT!”
The creature roared back:
“YOU TURNED MY SON INTO A MONSTER!”
Everybody froze.
Then slowly…
The tall man lowered his head.
And from outside the compound…
Footsteps approached.
Heavy footsteps.
Many footsteps.
One by one…
Dark figures entered through the broken gate.
Men and women dressed completely in black.
At least twenty of them.
Standing silently in the rain.
Then the crowd parted.
And somebody stepped forward slowly.
A young man.
About my age.
Same height.
Same face.
Same eyes.
He looked exactly like me.
Then he smiled slowly and said:
“Hello, brother.”

Episode 6 — “The Thing Wearing My Father’s Face”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The creature inside the box smiled slowly with my father’s face.

Its neck cracked as it turned toward me.

KRAK.

KRAK.

KRAK.

The smell coming from its body was unbearable.

Like rotten meat buried for years.

My mother screamed and dragged me backward.

> “DON’T LOOK INTO ITS EYES!”

But it was too late.

The moment our eyes met…

I saw something.

Not the room.

Not the house.

Another place entirely.

I saw my father running through a forest at night.

Rain was pouring heavily.

He looked younger.

Terrified.

And in his hands…

Was the same wooden box.

Behind him were men carrying fire torches.

Chasing him.

The same three men standing in our compound now.

Then I heard my father shouting:

> “I won’t let you use my son!”

Suddenly the vision disappeared.

I fell to the floor gasping heavily.

The creature smiled wider.

> “You see now…”

Its voice sounded like many people speaking together.

My mother started praying loudly.

The tall man stepped forward carefully.

For the first time, fear was visible on his face too.

> “You should not have opened completely.”

The creature laughed.

A terrible laugh.

> “You lost control the moment the boy heard my voice.”

Then it slowly climbed out of the box.

CRACK.

Its bones bent unnaturally.

Its legs looked broken.

Yet it still stood upright.

The room temperature dropped immediately.

Cold air filled everywhere.

One of the black-clothed men brought out a strange white powder and threw it at the creature.

Immediately—

FWWWWSH!

The powder burst into blue flames.

The creature screamed horribly.

But only for a second.

Then it stopped.

And smiled again.

Completely unharmed.

That was when panic truly entered the room.

The tall man whispered:

> “Impossible…”

The creature turned toward him slowly.

> “You buried me alive.”

Silence.

My heart pounded violently.

Buried alive?

The tall man clenched his fists.

> “You betrayed the Order.”

The creature stepped closer.

> “Because I discovered what the box truly was.”

Thunder exploded outside again.

Then suddenly…

The creature pointed directly at me.

> “My son will finish what I started.”

My mother screamed immediately.

> “NEVER!”

The creature’s black eyes moved toward her.

And instantly—

She lifted off the ground.

I shouted in terror.

“MAMA!”

Something invisible was choking her.

She struggled helplessly in the air.

The strange men rushed forward, chanting words I couldn’t understand.

The room lights started flickering wildly.

Then the creature looked at me again.

> “Open the inner compartment.”

I froze.

“What?”

The creature pointed toward the inside of the box.

And for the first time…

I noticed there was another smaller compartment hidden beneath it.

My mother kept struggling for air.

Tears rolled down her face as she shook her head desperately at me.

The creature smiled.

> “Open it… or she dies.”

Slowly…

With shaking hands…

I stepped toward the box.

Then I opened the hidden compartment.

And immediately I found something wrapped inside old red cloth.

A photograph.

I picked it up slowly.

The moment I saw the picture…

My entire world changed.

Because the photograph showed my father standing beside my mother…

And beside them was another child.

A little boy.

A boy who looked exactly like me.

Behind the photograph were four words written in blood:

> “ONLY ONE TWIN SURVIVED.”

Episode 5 — “My Father Was Inside the Box”

I couldn’t breathe.

My father’s voice was coming from inside the box.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly his voice.

The same deep tone I grew up hearing as a child.

My knees became weak instantly.

“Mama…”

My voice shook badly.

“How is Daddy inside the box?”

My mother covered her ears immediately.

> “Don’t listen to it!”

IT?

Not him.

It.

The thing inside the box laughed softly.

A dry, painful laugh.

Then the fingers pushed harder against the opening.

The lid moved wider slowly.

KRRRREEEEK.

The tall man suddenly shouted:

> “Close the box NOW!”

One of the black-clothed men rushed forward with another chain.

But immediately he touched the box—

BOOM!

An invisible force threw him across the room again.

This time blood came out from his mouth.

The entire house shook violently.

Plates started falling from shelves.

Windows cracked.

Outside, dogs began barking wildly all over the street.

The voice inside the box spoke again.

Slower this time.

> “Samuel… they lied to you…”

Tears filled my eyes immediately.

Because deep inside me…

I wanted to believe it was truly my father.

The voice continued:

> “Your mother knows what really happened to me.”

I turned toward her instantly.

She looked terrified.

Then she shook her head repeatedly.

> “No… no… don’t say anything…”

But the voice laughed again.

> “Tell him how I begged you not to lock me inside.”

The room became silent.

My heart nearly stopped.

I looked at my mother slowly.

“What… does that mean?”

My mother broke down crying immediately.

Real crying.

The kind that comes from years of guilt.

Then she whispered:

> “Your father did not die the way people think.”

My chest tightened painfully.

“What are you saying?”

She looked toward the box with fear.

Then finally confessed:

> “The night your father brought that box home… something followed him.”

Thunder exploded outside again.

> “He changed completely.”

The strange men listened quietly now.

Even they looked uncomfortable.

My mother continued crying.

> “Your father stopped sleeping. He spoke to shadows. Sometimes he disappeared at night.”

The box started shaking again.

GBAM!

GBAM!!

GBAM!!!

The voice inside suddenly became angry.

> “SHE IS LYING!”

The walls trembled immediately.

Neighbors outside screamed in fear.

My mother held my hand tightly.

> “One night… I woke up and found your father standing over your bed with a knife.”

I froze.

> “He kept saying the box wanted a blood sacrifice.”

My stomach turned instantly.

No…

No way.

Tears rolled down my mother’s face.

> “That was when I knew your father was no longer himself.”

The voice inside the box roared furiously.

And suddenly—

The lid burst fully open.

KPRAAAAA!!

Dark smoke exploded out into the room.

Everybody fell backward.

I covered my face instantly.

Then slowly…

A hand came out.

Not pale anymore.

Black.

Burnt.

Long fingers.

Then another hand appeared.

The tall man shouted immediately:

> “RUN!”

But before anybody moved…

The thing inside the box sat upright slowly.

And under the flickering light…

I saw my father’s face.

Rotting.

Smiling.

And his eyes were completely black.

Episode 4 — “The Voice Inside the Box”

The moment the voice called my name…

My blood froze.

I stepped back immediately.

The wooden box was still chained exactly where it had always been.

Yet something inside it was moving.

Slowly.

Violently.

GBAM!

The box shook again.

Women outside started screaming prayers.

One neighbor jumped over the fence and injured himself while running away.

But the three strange men remained calm.

Almost excited.

The tall man with my father’s face looked directly at me.

> “You can hear it now.”

I swallowed hard.

“Hear what?”

He smiled slowly.

> “The box only speaks to blood.”

My mother suddenly held my shirt tightly.

> “Don’t listen to them!”

Her hands were trembling badly now.

Then she whispered:

> “Samuel… your father made a mistake the night he opened that box.”

Another loud bang came from inside it.

GBAM!

This time the chain around the box moved slightly.

On its own.

I wanted to run.

Everything inside me was screaming RUN.

But something strange was happening too.

A part of me…

Wanted to open it.

Wanted to know what was inside.

The tall man stepped closer.

> “Your father was supposed to protect it.”

My mother shouted:

> “LIAR!”

For the first time, the man’s expression changed.

Anger.

Cold anger.

Then he looked at my mother.

> “Your husband stole from us.”

My mother’s lips trembled.

> “He wanted to leave your evil society!”

The compound suddenly became silent again.

The rain had stopped completely.

Even the night insects stopped making noise.

Then the man spoke softly:

> “There is no leaving.”

The two other men moved closer to the box.

Immediately my mother screamed:

> “DON’T TOUCH IT!”

Too late.

One of them placed his hand on the wooden cover.

And instantly—

AAAAAHHHHH!!

The man screamed horribly and flew backward across the room like something pushed him.

He crashed into the wall hard.

Everybody shouted in fear.

The man’s hand…

Was burnt black.

Smoke was coming out from his fingers.

I stared at the box in horror.

What exactly was inside that thing?

The tall man looked surprised for the first time.

Then slowly…

He turned toward me.

> “It chose you.”

My heartbeat became louder.

“What do you mean?”

But before he answered—

The box shook violently again.

Then the rusty chain around it snapped by itself.

KPAAA!

The lid opened slightly.

Just small.

But enough for something dark inside to move.

I froze completely.

Because I saw fingers.

Human fingers.

Pale fingers slowly pressing against the opening from inside the box.

My mother started crying immediately.

> “Oh God… it’s waking up…”

Then suddenly…

The thing inside the box spoke again.

This time louder.

Clearer.

And with my father’s voice.

> “Samuel… my son… help me come out.”

Episode 3 — “What Was Inside the Box”

My legs became weak.

I kept staring at the man standing in the rain.

No.

It couldn’t be.

My father died 15 years ago.

I saw his body myself.

So how could this stranger have the exact same face?

The same tribal mark.

The same deep voice.

Even the way he stood…

It was my father.

My mother began crying immediately.

Not normal crying.

The kind of cry that comes from somebody hiding fear for many years.

> “Please… leave my son out of this.”

The man finally removed his hat slowly.

Women screamed.

One neighbor fainted instantly.

It was truly my father’s face.

But older.

Colder.

And his eyes…

His eyes looked empty.

Like a man who stopped being human long ago.

He stepped closer to me.

> “Samuel… where is the box?”

I couldn’t speak.

My mouth had gone dry.

My mother suddenly shouted:

> “DON’T TELL HIM!”

Immediately she said that, the other two men moved forward.

That was when I noticed something terrifying.

None of the three men blinked.

Not once.

Rain continued pouring heavily, yet their clothes remained dry.

The tallest man — the one with my father’s face — looked toward the back room.

Then he smiled slowly.

> “Still hiding it in the same place after all these years?”

My mother’s breathing became faster.

She grabbed my arm painfully.

> “Samuel… if they collect that box, many people will die.”

My heart pounded loudly.

“What is inside it?!”

But before she answered—

One of the men suddenly appeared beside our room door.

Not walked.

Appeared.

As if he teleported.

Neighbors started running out of the compound immediately.

People were shouting prayers everywhere.

The strange man touched the locked room door gently.

Then the door opened by itself.

KREEEEEEEK.

Cold air rushed out from inside.

And immediately…

The smell hit everybody.

A horrible smell.

Like something had died there years ago.

The tall man looked at me again.

> “Bring the box.”

“No!”

My mother screamed and held my legs tightly.

Then she looked up at me with tears.

> “Your father did terrible things for wealth before you were born.”

The compound became silent.

> “The box is the reason he died.”

I felt dizzy.

Nothing made sense anymore.

“What are you talking about?”

My mother swallowed hard.

Then she finally said the words she had hidden for years:

> “Your father belonged to a secret society.”

Thunder exploded outside again.

> “The box contains something they have been searching for since the night your father betrayed them.”

My chest tightened.

Betrayed who?

The men?

The society?

Then suddenly—

The room light flickered by itself.

Even though NEPA had taken light long ago.

And from inside the opened room…

Something started knocking from INSIDE the wooden box.

GBAM.

Everybody froze.

Another knock came.

GBAM!

Then a voice whispered softly from inside the box:

> “Samuel… open it…”

Episode 2 — “The Knock at Midnight”

The entire compound froze.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Only the sound of rain hitting the zinc roof filled the darkness.

GBAM!

The gate shook again.

This time louder.

My mother suddenly grabbed my wrist with trembling fingers.

> “Don’t open that gate…”

Her voice sounded weak, almost disappearing.

The neighbors exchanged nervous glances.

Even old Mama Bisi, who feared nothing, quietly carried her children inside.

Another knock came.

But this time…

A voice followed.

> “Open the gate. We know he is inside.”

My blood ran cold immediately.

Who were they talking about?

Me?

My mother tried to stand up but fell back instantly.

I held her tightly.

“Mama who are those people?!”

Before she could answer, footsteps rushed toward us from outside.

It was our neighbor, Uncle Jide.

He entered breathing heavily.

> “Three men are outside your gate.”

“Who are they?” somebody asked.

Uncle Jide lowered his voice.

> “I don’t know… but they are dressed completely in black.”

Thunder struck loudly outside.

At that exact moment, one of the men outside spoke again.

Calmly.

Slowly.

> “We are not here to hurt anybody. We only came for the box.”

The box.

The moment he said it, my mother started shaking violently.

Then she looked straight into my eyes.

> “Samuel… listen carefully.”

She pulled me closer.

> “If anything happens to me tonight, take the box and run to your father’s village.”

“What?!”

> “Find a man called Baba Fadeyi.”

“Who is that?!”

But before she could explain—

CRAAAAASH!!

The gate suddenly burst open.

Women screamed.

Children started crying.

Three tall men entered the compound slowly.

Black clothes.

Black shoes.

Black gloves.

And strangely…

Even under the heavy rain, none of them looked wet.

My heart nearly stopped.

The tallest among them stepped forward.

His face was covered with a hat.

Then he spoke calmly:

> “Twenty years ago, your husband stole something that does not belong to him.”

My mother shouted immediately:

> “LEAVE MY SON ALONE!”

The man ignored her.

Instead…

He pointed directly at me.

> “The boy will open the box tonight.”

At that moment, thunder flashed across the compound.

And for one second…

Just one second…

I saw the man’s face clearly.

I nearly screamed.

Because the man looked exactly like my dead father.

Episode 1 — “My Mother Warned Me Never To Open My Late Father’s Box”

Rain fell heavily the night my father died.

Not normal rain.

The kind of rain that makes dogs hide and old women pray quietly inside their rooms.

I was only 12 years old then, but I still remember the exact words my mother whispered while people cried outside.

> “Samuel… no matter what happens in this life, never open your father’s wooden box.”

At that age, I didn’t understand why she was shaking while saying it.

I thought maybe the box contained money.

Or documents.

Or secrets meant for adults.

But after my father was buried, the box became something else entirely.

Something nobody in our house talked about.

It was an old dark wooden box chained with rusty iron at the back of my mother’s room.

No key.

No label.

Nothing.

And strangely… every Friday night, my mother would lock herself inside the room for hours.

Sometimes I heard whispers.

Sometimes crying.

Sometimes… footsteps.

Yet she always came out pretending nothing happened.

Years passed.

I grew older.

Life became harder.

Very hard.

After secondary school, I couldn’t continue education because there was no money.

My mother started selling akara by the roadside.

I worked at a mechanic workshop.

Still, hunger lived with us like a family member.

Then one evening, everything changed.

I returned home tired and soaked from rain.

Immediately I entered the compound, I noticed neighbors gathered in front of our house.

My heart skipped.

One old woman saw me and covered her mouth.

Another shook her head slowly.

That was when I saw my mother.

She was lying on the floor.

Motionless.

Her wrapper stained with blood.

“Mama!!”

I rushed to her immediately.

Her breathing was weak.

Very weak.

She grabbed my shirt with surprising strength and pulled me close.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

Not pain.

Fear.

Then she whispered:

> “Promise me… you will never open that box…”

I was crying already.

“Mama stop talking like that! Nothing will happen to you!”

But she tightened her grip.

> “They are still looking for it…”

“Who?!”

Before she could answer…

The compound suddenly went dark.

NEPA took light.

At that exact moment, somebody knocked once on our gate.

GBAM.

Just once.

Everybody became silent.

Even the neighbors.

Then another knock came.

Slower this time.

GBAM!

My mother’s eyes widened immediately.

And for the first time in my life…

I saw my mother terrified.

She looked directly toward the back room where the box was hidden.

Then she whispered:

> “They found us…”
