MOVEMENT AND PROGRESS ARE NOT ALWAYS THE SAME THING.

Sometimes, you can be very busy and still be moving in the wrong direction.

✓ You buy land quickly because you're afraid someone else will take it.
✓ You buy seedlings from the first person who replies to your message.
✓ You arrive at the farm and decide on the spacing because, well… “I'm already here, let's just start.”

From the outside, it looks like you're taking action.
Money is moving, people are working, things are happening.

But then comes the important question: WHERE IS THE PLAN?

Oil palm farming isn't something you want to approach with:
“Let's just start and figure things out along the way.”

Some decisions are easier—and much cheaper—to make before you spend the money.

🌱 Before buying land: Understand the land. Check its suitability, drainage and other important conditions.

🌴 Before buying seedlings: Know what you're buying, the planting material you're getting and where it comes from.

📐 Before planting: Have your spacing and field layout planned.

💰 Before spending: Have a realistic budget.

📋 Before starting: Understand what the first year of establishment and maintenance will require.

Because skipping the planning stage doesn't mean you've eliminated the decisions.

You've simply postponed them until a more expensive stage.
And that's where problems can become costly.

The tricky part about expensive mistakes?
They rarely look like mistakes while you're making them, they look like action (i.e; you're moving, you're spending, you're getting things done.)

SOMETIMES, YOU DON'T NEED MORE INFORMATION. YOU JUST NEED A BETTER EXPLANATION.

Have you ever looked at the same thing several times and still thought:
“I don't understand this.”

Maybe you've read about fertilizer application more than once.
You've seen the recommendations.
You've even taken notes.
But somehow, it still feels complicated.

Then someone explains it differently.
And suddenly… It clicks.

You're left thinking: “So this was what I was confused about all along?” 😅
This happens a lot in farming.

Sometimes, the problem isn't that the subject is too difficult.
You simply haven't had it explained in a way that makes sense to you yet.

You may hear people say: “Oil palm farming is complicated.”
And yes, there are important things you need to understand.
But you don't have to understand everything at once.

Take it one step at a time.

🌱 Fertilizer application — understand what to apply, when and why.
📐 Spacing — understand how the layout affects your plantation.
💰 Farm budgeting — understand what you're spending and what each cost is for.
🌴 Production — understand how the plantation develops over time.

When you break a big subject into smaller, understandable parts, it becomes much easier to work with.

DELAY HAS A COST — EVEN WHEN YOU CAN’T SEE IT ON YOUR BANK STATEMENT.

Nobody sends you an invoice for postponing your plans.
You don't see “one year of delay” deducted from your account.

But in plantation farming, time is part of the investment.

Imagine you've already decided that you want to establish an oil palm plantation.
You've done your research.
You understand the basics.
You know what kind of land you need.
You've started working through the numbers.

But you keep saying:
“Maybe next month.”
“Let me save a little more.”
“I'll start next planting season.”

Then the months pass.
And before you realise it, another year has gone by.

The farm still isn't there.

The cost of that delay may not appear as a deduction in your bank account, but the time is gone.

If you plant this year, your palms get this year's growth.
If you wait until next year, you can't get that year back.

You can't tell the palm:
“I was supposed to plant you last year, so please grow one year faster.” 🌴

Nature doesn't work that way.
This is why timing matters in plantation farming.

Every year you delay pushes your entire production timeline further forward.

But let's be clear: This is not a call to rush into farming.

WHEN YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT OIL PALM INCOME, DON’T LOOK AT NAIRA ALONE. LOOK AT KILOGRAMS TOO.

When people talk about the income potential of an oil palm plantation, the conversation often goes straight to:

“How much money can I make?”

But there is another number you need to pay attention to:
KILOGRAMS.

More specifically, FFB — Fresh Fruit Bunch.
Why does FFB matter? Because this is where your production comes in.

The quantity and weight of the fresh fruit bunches your plantation produces are important because they determine how much raw material moves into the processing chain.

FFB can be processed into products such as crude palm oil and palm kernel-related products.

So, when we talk about:
🌱 Quality planting material
📐 Proper spacing
🧪 Fertilizer
🌿 W**d management
👨🏽‍🌾 Good farm management

These are not just separate farming activities, they are connected to production.
And production is connected to revenue.

This is why asking only: “How much is one oil palm seedling?”
isn't enough when you're thinking about plantation investment.

You also need to ask:
How many palms will I plant?
How well will they establish?
How will I maintain them?
How will the plantation develop over time?
What level of production should I realistically plan for?

Your number of seedlings tells you what you are putting into the ground.
Your production tells you what the plantation is producing.

And the weight of your FFB is one of the important numbers for understanding that production.

So the next time you see us talking about fertilizer, spacing, planting materials or farm management, don't see them as topics that have nothing to do with income.
They are all part of the same conversation:

Good farm management → better production potential → understanding your revenue potential.

A SPACING MISTAKE CAN STAY WITH YOUR FARM FOR YEARS.

Some farming decisions can be changed as your plantation develops:
✓ You can adjust your fertilizer programme.
✓ You can improve your w**d management.
✓ You can change your farm management practices.

But spacing is different.

Once your oil palms are established in the field, you cannot simply move them because you later realise the spacing was wrong.

The palms are already there and they will continue to grow there.

That is why spacing should be carefully planned before planting, not corrected after.

For example, consider a 9m × 9m spacing.
The distance between palms affects the layout of your plantation and the amount of space available to each palm as it grows.

If palms are planted too close together or the field is poorly arranged, it can create management challenges as the plantation develops.

And five years later, you can't simply say: “Let's move this palm a little to the left.”
It is no longer a seedling, it is an established palm.

This is why proper planning before planting matters.

Before you put that first seedling in the ground:
📐 Draw your layout.
🧮 Calculate the number of stands.
🌴 Check the spacing.
🌱 Consider the shape and condition of the land.
✅ Then plant.

A few minutes of planning on paper can prevent a problem that may affect your plantation for years.

One thing many new investors don't realise about oil palm farming is that revenue changes as the plantation grows.

It is easy to ask: “How much will this farm make?”
But there is another question you should ask: “At what stage of the farm?”

A young plantation and a mature plantation will not necessarily generate the same level of revenue.
Why? Because the palms are still developing.

As the plantation grows, factors such as the number of productive palms, bunch production, yield and market price all influence what the farm can generate.

So, looking at just one year may not give you the full picture.

For example, Year 3 and Year 7 are not automatically going to tell the same financial story.
The plantation is changing, production is developing, and your revenue potential can change along with it.

This is why it makes more sense to look at oil palm investment as a timeline, rather than focusing on one big revenue figure.

Ask yourself:
🌱 What am I spending during establishment?
🌴 When does production begin?

WHAT IS ONE FARMING MISTAKE YOU ALMOST MADE?

Before we become experienced farmers, most of us have moments when we almost make decisions we would later regret.

✓Maybe you almost bought seedlings from the wrong source.
✓Maybe you found what looked like good land but almost bought it without properly checking the soil, drainage or location.
✓Maybe someone gave you advice that sounded convincing, only for you to later discover that it wasn't entirely correct.
✓Or perhaps you were about to spend money on something you thought you needed, until you realised it wasn't actually necessary for your farm.

And for some people, the mistake wasn't almost made.
It already happened but you learned from it, and that experience is valuable.
We are not asking because we want to laugh at anyone's mistakes. Quite the opposite....

Sometimes, sharing one farmer's experience can help another farmer avoid making the same mistake.
That is why conversations between farmers matter.
📚 There are things you can learn from books.
🎓 There are things you can learn from training.

You read an article about oil palm farming yet, nothing changes on your farm.

You've used a farm calculator yet, you haven't planted a single seedling.
You've asked an experienced farmer an important question yet, you still don't have a plantation.

So you might look at all of that and think: “I haven't really started.”
But you have......
You just haven't started in the way you imagined.

✓ That guide you read may have taught you something that could help you avoid an expensive mistake.
✓ That calculation you made may have helped you realise that your actual farm requires a different budget from what you initially had in mind.
✓ That question you asked may have given you the clarity you needed to make a better decision.

These things may seem small, but small steps add up.

YOU HAVE 10 ACRES. SO, HOW MUCH WILL IT ACTUALLY COST TO ESTABLISH YOUR OIL PALM FARM?

Let’s stop guessing and look at the numbers.

Imagine you have 10 acres of land and you want to establish a Malaysian Supergene oil palm plantation.

Using 60 palms per acre as your planning figure:

10 acres × 60 palms = 600 seedlings. 🌱
That gives you the number of seedlings you need.

But here’s where many people stop and that’s where the real calculation should actually begin.

Buying the seedlings is only one part of establishing the farm.
You also need to consider:

🌱 Land preparation
👨🏽‍🌾 Planting labour
🧪 Fertilizer
🌿 W**ding and maintenance
🚜 Equipment, where necessary
🚚 Transportation and logistics

And the cost of these things can vary depending on your location, labour rates, current input prices, farm condition and how you choose to establish and manage the farm.

So when someone asks:
“How much does it cost to plant 10 acres of oil palm?”

The answer shouldn't simply be the price of 600 seedlings.

There is more to the farm than the seedlings.

At the same time, don't assume that establishing 10 acres must cost an enormous amount simply because you've heard someone quote a high figure.

And don't copy the cheapest figure someone else gives you either.

Your farm needs its own calculation.

✓ Start with your acreage.
✓ Determine your number of seedlings.
✓ List your establishment costs.
✓ Add your expected maintenance expenses.
✓ Factor in logistics and other necessary costs.
✓ Then look at the total.

That calculation can help you make a much better decision:

Can I start now?
Should I reduce my acreage?
Do I need more time to prepare financially?

The goal isn't to scare you with numbers or give you an attractive figure.
The goal is to help you understand what your own farm will require.

Because good farming doesn't start with guesswork.
