In this beautifully insightful report from the World Farmers Center Newsletter, we learn:
• Our identification of Iseyin long ago as one the remaining choice centers for farming in Nigeria, amidst the insecurity situation around, is well confirmed. Just like some communities in Nasarawa and Kwara, livestock farmers/herders and other crop farmers have found a way to co-exist without frequently getting in each other's way.
• Information and the right education can make a world of difference. The herders now realize they will get better milk quality and volume when they graze their cattle within a properly setup designated space rather than grazing them over long distances, into other people's farms. Kudos to FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria.
• It is also through better research and continuous education that the herders have realized crossbreeds produce more milk for them. Just like Aminat Lawal, our graduates, especially in the agricultural and science fields, need to get more involved at the centre of the action, particularly in these local farming settlements, where enlightenment on best practices are still very low.
• The piece informs us about plans by FrieslandCampina WAMCO to further establish their own farms, to get more fresh milk supplies. This is despite seeing their DDP program grow from daily collection of 400 litres of milk to 41,000 litres of milk.
Of course, this points to the fact that more investments are needed in that regard, just like in other sectors of the Agribusiness industry.
