This morning, while meditating on the profound concept of the WORD, which led me to a deep reflection on the significance of the question "WHY." It’s intriguing how this pivotal inquiry often slips through the cracks of our daily lives, yet it possesses an immense power to shape our interactions and influence our decision-making processes.
Let’s take a moment to consider the impact of asking questions such as "WHY is that happening?", "WHY did you choose this path?", or "WHY are you responding in this manner?". When we engage with "WHY," we open ourselves to a treasure trove of insights that can illuminate different perspectives and foster deeper understanding. By making "WHY" our steadfast companion in conversations, we create an environment ripe for empathy. This allows us to recognize and appreciate the unique experiences of others, rather than hastily framing judgments based on our limited viewpoints.
To illustrate this, let’s delve into a poignant narrative from the book of Joshua, specifically chapter 22. In this passage, the Israelites were on the brink of conflict, ready to engage in battle against their fellow tribes. Their suspicion arose because they believed that the Reubenites, Gadites, and half of the tribe of Manasseh had built an altar that symbolized rebellion against God. In their rush to judgment, they assumed the worst possible motivations without seeking any clarification or understanding.
However, the narrative takes a different turn; the Reubenites offered a clear and sincere explanation for their actions. In verse 27, they stated, "But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD." Far from being an act of rebellion, this was a genuine effort aimed at preserving unity and fostering understanding among the tribes.
Reflect on the potential chaos that might have erupted had the Israelites rushed into battle without first seeking to understand the Reubenites' intentions. The fallout from such a misunderstanding could have led to deep emotional scars and possibly irreparable divisions among the tribes. This scenario underscores the critical IMPORTANCE OF ASKING "WHY" before jumping to conclusions.
In our own lives, before we succumb to feelings of anger or frustration, we must harness the transformative power found in the question "WHY." Especially before making decisions that could have significant implications for others, let us cultivate the habit of pausing and reflecting on the underlying motives and emotions at play.
