Work Attitude and Workers’ Performance for Productivity
Introduction
Going by the current branding of Nigerian workers as being brash, rude, ignorant and unproductive, virtually all organizations in this age of knowledge and technological driven economy should make tireless efforts to become performance driven through its valuable assets of human capital. The human capital of any organization is its employees’ competencies and their ability to perform effectively. Only competent and performing employees can contribute towards organizational goals effectively. Competencies are underlying principles and qualities that are required to exhibit abilities at work. Knowledge, skill and attitude together constitute competency.
Training inputs and on-the-job exposure in organizations often provides ample opportunities for workers to acquire knowledge and skills relating to the area of work and specialization. However, the attitude developed towards the same is often left out. Attitude is a state of readiness of a person towards the performance of the job; attitude competence is an employee’s total disposition towards effective performance of the work and its desired outcomes. Research has linked emotional exhaustion to a plethora of ailments including physiological problems, depression, family difficulties and general breakdown in feeling of community. A growing body of research has begun to demonstrate that emotional exhaustion can be deleterious consequences for organizations as well. For example, exhausted worker manifest lower levels of commitments and a greater likelihood of seeking employment elsewhere. With these issues in mind, it is therefore pertinent that efforts are made to train staff of corporate organizations on attitude to work and performance.
The achievement of the primary goal of an organization rests predominantly on the shoulders of the top management who articulates the policy direction. However, the ex*****on of the tasks are carried out by the middle level personnel, middle level managers and the junior staff who on daily basis relate with the grass root people on the delicate terrain of development. Their attitude to work and the understanding of job ethics is sine quo non to the achievement of the pre-determined goals. Human emotion mobilizes the mind and the body to meet one of the challenges of living and reproducing in the cognitive niche. Some challenges are posed by physical things and the emotions that deal with them like disgust, fear, and appreciation of natural beauty work in straightforward ways. Others are posed by people. The problem in dealing with people is that people deal back. The emotions that evolve in response to other people’s emotion like anger, gratitude, shame and romantic love are played on a complicated chessboard with in effect affect work and performance of an individual.
