Last Friday, 27 May, we had an exciting moment of impact facilitating a symposium on Circumventing Unhealthy Social Media Engagement with the students at Vale College in commemorating their Children's Day.

Unhealthy social media engagement is fast becoming a concern and threat to the growth, development and identity of teenagers in our society. Teenagers are among the vulnerable groups susceptible to unhealthy social media engagement.

Neil Postman while noting that the victims of shorter attention spans are often children or members of younger generations who have grown up with technology, revealed that about 73% of all adolescents are users of social networking sites and that some of these sites restrict usage to the under age 13.

The effect of unhealthy social media engagement over time can be demeaning to the character, the health (including mental, emotional and physical health), the productivity, the identity and image of a person, institutions or even a community.

The Symposium has helped teenagers at Vale College position and reposition themselves to address or circumvent unhealthy social media engagement and take advantage of social media for optimum growth and productivity.

We sincerely appreciate the Leadership in the person of Bar. Funso Adegbola and Mr Ishaq Akanbi for their prompt acceptance of our proposal to educate and address the needs of the teenagers in our society, likewise the Management, the entire staff and students of the Vale College for the cordial cooperation received.

The Vale College, well known for producing seasoned secondary school graduates of Character and Learning, is one of the best schools in Ibadan and is always at the heart of positioning and repositioning her students for growth, productivity and greatness.
