Radio Broadcasting in Nigeria took an amazingly different style when the first all-pidgin radio station Wazobia FM hit the airwaves in Lagos in 2007. The station as expected was widely accepted by a large percentage of the Lagos populace. I see this as a good initiative because apart from the fact that pidgin brings flair and fun to regular conversations and by extension, to broadcasting and talk radio, it is also a good way to reach a wider range of people. I watched recently in a Local Community how Advertisers announced their Products in the language of the Residents of the Community. I realized that it is only normal that people are communicated to in a language that they understand and in the simplest terms. So we all heard the stories in elementary school of how communication in the earliest settlements was carried out - the crude methods of information dissemination. The gong is indeed a loud device at which sound, people from long and close ranges pay attention to listen to the message that will follow the last bang. There was that guy who would walk about the neighborhood, from house to house, in the markets and around the community, to announce the king's intentions or the reason why no one should walk the streets after 7PM. His voice had to be audible and loud enough. He was The Towncrier.

Times changed and new devices arrived. These devices eased the work of The Towncrier. He no longer needed to repeat the same lines at every corner of the town. He only then needed to record the message and it would be heard thousands of miles away and could be relayed over and over again. He could then write in beautiful artistic prints, "the king's thoughts" on large billboards and project these to passers-by. New Communication and Publicity methods had arrived.
