I am inviting you to a workshop on Data analysis from 30 July to 4 August, 2012.

Duration:
The intensive training programme will run for one week. July 30 to August 4, 2012.

Training Workshop on

STATISTICAL DATA ANALYSIS
For Researchers

Venue
Professor Biyi Afonja Statistical Laboratory
Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria

Date: July 30 – Aug. 4, 2012

Time: 9.00 a.m – 5.00 p.m daily
Introduction
An essential element of any research is statistical analysis and documentation of research findings. This is not limited to the science based discipline but peculiar to discipline in the Social Sciences, Technology, Education, Medicine and even the Arts.

The relative advantage of speed, accuracy and capacity to handle large volume of data in a few seconds have necessitated the use and application of specialized softwares for some common and complex data structures.

An intensive training workshop on the use and application of specialized statistical software in the analysis of data where participants will be exposed to practical application by experienced and competent professional statisticians and specialists.

Objective of the Training
To develop capacity on the use and applications of statistical software.
To expose participants to the theory, meaning and interpretation of some relevant statistical concepts.
To teach participants how to write programm to analyze complex models that cannot be handled by readymade packages.

Training Format
The training will utilize participatory approach for 6 days. It will include lectures, interactive teaching/learning methods. More hours will be devoted to practical session.

Statistical Packages to be offered
The Software to be used for the training are: E-Views; SPSS, STATA, R-Package, Statistical Plus, TSP and MATLAB
The training workshop is categorized into three according to the initial competence of the participants.

(A) Basic Analysis with SPSS and EXCEL
Course Fee N10,000.00
Basic Statistics
• Questionnaire design
• Data coding and entry
• Data editing
• Descriptive Statistics
• ANOVA
• Regression and Correlation
• Non-Parametric test
• Charts

(B) Intermediate Analysis: With STATISTICA, STATA and E-Views
Course Fee N15,000.00
• Data entry and programming
• Econometrics
• Time Series
• Experimental designs
• Operations Research

(C) Advance Analysis: With R Software and MATLAB
Course Fee N20,000.00
• Programming with R
• Programming with MATLAB
• Simulation and Annealing
• Bootstrap
• Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)
• Metropolis Hasting Algorithm
• Gibbs Sampling

Expected results
At the end of the training the students should be able to:
1. Analyze primary data from questionnaire.
2. Indentify each statistical software package with their various capabilities.
3. Know the appropriate package to apply to different data structure.
4. Write simple or complex program to analyze data where software packages are not readily available.

Target Participants
• Students (undergraduates and postgraduates) in the sciences and related fields.
• Lecturers and Researchers in various fields from the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education..
• Directors, managers and policy makers in federal and state ministries, as well as Department of Planning and Research in local governments.
• Interested members of the general public.

Venue:
Professor Biyi Afonja Statistical Laboratory in the Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan.

Training Modalities
The period of training shall be between the hours of 9.00 a.m and 5.00 p.m. Each participant will have a computer unit to him/herself for effective teaching and learning. The challenge of erratic power supply is adequately taken care of.

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The training programme is organized by the Consultancy/Workshop Committee of the Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.

Dear Colleague,
I am of the opinion that what is happening in our institutions of higher learning is being replicated in Government of Nigeria. in most Universities in Nigeria, each Dept. teach those courses where they do not have relative advantage/expertise even though they claim they run the Course system. For example where Statistics is suppose to be taught in faculties of Education and the social sciences, they design and teach statistics course by themselves. because every body believes they know so much of statistics.

The same thing is happening in government depts. Instead of allowing staff of the NBS or CBN or any other Govt Statistical agencies design efficient procedure for collecting reliable, efficient unbiased data in other ministries including the petroleum sector, the ministries and other parastatals decides to collect data themselves decide on the kind of data they like to release to the public. Thus it is almost impossible to allow Govt. Statistician to make meaningful contribution to the current issue of removal of oil subsidy.

Dearth of accurate and reliable data on number of vehicle plying our roads, total number of liters of petrol we consume daily, average number of liters of petrol per vehicle, non availability of records of imports and export and so on is what has brought us to where we are today.

comments and contributions are welcome.

Dear colleague,
Please note the price of petrol in Nigerian currency in the following countries:
Oil Producing Countries:-
Saudi Arabia: N26.52; Kuwait: N37.66; UAE: N75.00; Iran: N58.40; Qatar: N32.12; Libya: N27.00; Venezuela: N5.84; Egypt: N46.72; Bahrain: N39.42; Russia: N90.52; Mexico: 81.76;Malaysia: N73.00; Indonesia: N81.14; Algeria: N51.00; Nigeria:141.00

Non – Oil Producing Countries:-
USA: N122.00; Cameroon: N192.00; Ghana: N131.00; Togo: N189.00; UK: N307.00; Iraq: N125.00; Benin Republic: 166.00; Ecuador: 85.00; Oman : N50.00; Angola: N104.00;

With or without subsidy, things have been working well in the oil producing countries. The BIG Question is that Why is it not working in Nigeria?????
Probably due to: (i) Corruption over he years (ii) lack of good leadership (iii) incapability of our leaders to arrest prosecute the corrupt the “cabals” (iv) inefficiency in governance e.t.c.

We welcome your suggestions and contributions.
May GOD help Nigeria.

Coordinator.

Dear colleague,
Good day. I hope this mail will meet you in good condition of health
despite the on going protest on the removal of fuel subsidy.

It appears the Government and the NLC as well as the organized
pressure groups do not have sufficient data to back their arguments. I
am not even sure if the NBS ( National Bureau of Statistics) has
information on the actual number of litters of oil of different type
that we consume in this country apart of what is produced (in barrels
par day) and the actual model for determining the price.

I personally feel that this is an area where we 'statistician' "young
statistician group" should be more relevant by providing necessary
data ( if they are not already available) for informed discussion - on
both sides - , decision making and reliable forecasting.

This is particularly so since our mission is to ensure the propagation
and the correct use, interpretation and application of statistics.

I like to have your opinion on this and other related issues so that
we can map out strategies on how to go about making these data
available and ensure that Nigerian employs the use of statistics (
correctly) in their discussions even at the National Assembly.

I am anxiously waiting for your contribution/opinion on these and
other related issues.

Thank you.

National Coordinator.
