HIRE VALUE, NOT CIRCUMSTANCE

Among the 20 candidates interviewed, he was clearly the most qualified but his pay slip on his last job was the least of them. The decision was easy about hiring him. He was offered three times his current pay. He was excited and wasted no time in jumping at the offer. Three months into the job, he was feeling frustrated and wanted out. No doubt, he loved his job and gave it his best shot. But he felt a deep-seated resentment against the Management that he felt had dealt him a bad hand. He accidentally discovered that the actual pay originally attached to his function was to have been six times what he was earning on his former job. Two of his subordinates were actually earning the same amount on which he was on-board! Two months later, he was on his way to another job! The sensitive position he occupied was definitely going to cause problems for the company. They offered to renegotiate but he was done!

Lesson to HR and every employer?
1. A current pay slip is NOT an accurate reflection of capacity or market value of any prospective employee. Many people are overrated and depending on their circumstance, far too many are underrated.

2. Remunerate the VALUE, not the circumstance of the candidate. Pay people according to their potential contribution and not their pay history. What you thought you saved by short-changing a candidate because of his unfortunate circumstance will be lost in multiples later in terms of logistics and downtime when the consequences start emerging.

3. Always have a baseline salary attached to any position and never offer a candidate less than what was originally earmarked. In fact, if the candidate shows that he is worth it, you may actually top that in order to attract and retain him.

4. Waiting for an employee to hit the verge of frustration or allowing his value to be recognized and required by a competitor before you start knee-jerk negotiations to retain him is actually a sign of negligence on your part and is more costly to the organization.

5. Nobody likes to feel used, no matter how much he loves the work. Perhaps the frustration of the imbalance between his function and his remuneration was the very reason that he moved to you. If he discovers the same disparity after he has been on-boarded with you, the disappointment and frustration that the discovery brings will mean your losing a good person too soon or at best keeping a reluctant worker. Then, it's not about the figure anymore, it's about the FEELING. If you make a good person feel less than their actual worth, they will end up resenting you. The results will show in the attitude they bring to work from then on.
Remember, the sky is not your limit, God is!

Essential Functions

Managing the work of the department and responding to requests for information and advice from within the laboratory and externally.
Ensure Clinical Microbiology Lab in 54gene is compliant with a consistent set of company approved laboratory policies and procedures, proper financial and operational controls, quality assurance measures, and safety programs and requirements.
Manage, in conjunction with the finance officer and head of laboratory operations, the contracts and resources of the department within the budget.
Develop and oversee long-range planning and budgeting plans including; personnel and equipment needs; monitoring and managing the laboratory budget, and monitoring the annual capital forecast
Be responsible for identifying future developments, which may affect the work of the laboratory and develop plans accordingly.
Participate in relevant professional activities and provide professional expertise and advice to outside bodies.
Ensure that all staff undergo regular performance development reviews to identify individual training needs, set and monitor objectives in line with the needs of the individual and objectives of the laboratory.
Ensure that the laboratory’s quality management system is maintained and developed.
Ensure that appropriate risk management procedures and documents are in place.
Maintenance of laboratory quality.
Continue to further education by participating in forums, conferences and industry specific organizations.
Handle materials in accordance with the standards for infection prevention and control.
Ensure that services are provided in an accurate, efficient and cost effective manner.

Duties

Supervision of laboratory scientist to ensure laboratory standards and turn around time are met.

Requirements

Education Requirements:

Graduate from a recognized medical school with MBBS or MBBCh or its international equivalent.
2 years post-fellowship experience in clinical Microbiology
Must be registered as a specialist with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
Wide experience in all aspects of clinical microbiology
Experience in Research and Global Health Delivery is a plus.
Must have a valid license to practice in Nigeria
