Crafting a Mission Statement That You'll Remember
BY Mike Kappel

Over nearly three decades in business, I’ve created mission statements that work well and others that have not. To craft a strong mission statement that's effective, follow these basic rules that I’ve learned along the way.

If you want to make a mission statement that you can actually remember, you have to make it personal. You must be personally invested in the process to create a mission statement that will really matter.

Other people may want you to include fancy words. Instead, use fifth-grade language that the average person can memorize in one minute. (And stop asking everybody else what they think. You know your business better than anyone else.)

1. Set the right boundaries for your mission statement. A mission statement helps you pin down on paper what you are going to achieve. For that reason, make sure yours has the right focus. Is your mission to serve the whole world with your fabulous barbecue sauce? That will be a massive undertaking.
You may be better off focusing on just the U.S. at first. Of course, you'll also have to guard against being too narrow. So don’t let your mission statement constrain your business too much. Just make sure that your mission statement is sensible -- but allows for growth.

2. Don’t expect too much from your mission statement. It’s not fair to ask that your mission statement to take on other roles; that’s when it becomes long-winded, mixed up and impossible to recall.
Your mission statement is not the same thing as your vision statement, unique value proposition or any other document that you think you need for your business.

3. Refine your mission statement until it feels right. You might think that your mission statement is carved in stone, but it's not. So keep refining it until it feels right -- then leave it alone.
If you find yourself constantly wanting to tweak or add to it, remember that the mission statement is there to keep you in check.

Whenever you have a grand new plan, measure it against your mission statement and see if the idea fits. If not, you may be getting off track -- and your mission statement has done its job!

Increasing Warehouse Productivity

Warehouse efficiency promotes productivity, which is essential to customer satisfaction. Jason Minghini, senior director, best practices, at Chattanooga, Tenn.-based third-party logistics provider Kenco Logistic Services offers the following tips for creating more efficient, productive warehouse operations.

1. Communicate effectively. Clearly communicating to workers your organizational goals and the processes to achieve them is one key to effective warehousing operations. When managers fail to create an environment of open and clear communication, employee productivity suffers, resulting in high turnover and wasted resources.

2. Standardize your processes by reducing potential variation in areas such as unloading, accounts payable, shift scheduling, and facilities management. Standardization saves time and money, and reduces errors.

3. Measure what matters for continuous improvement in your processes. If an outcome is not important to customers and shareholders, don't waste time measuring it. One 3PL-managed distribution center for a major U.S. manufacturer adopted a work measurement program to gauge and report warehouse performance at the employee level. The facility increased productivity by 10 percent and reduced labor costs by 11.3 percent.

4. Determine what drives processes to ensure the proper causal connection between outcomes and enablers. Key performance indicators reflect the past; standardization and error proofing are the answer to productivity now.

5. Use the DMAIC method to understand the "why" of your operations, not just the "how." This five-step approach (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) reduces costly process variations. The backbone of Six Sigma methodology, DMAIC ensures sustained, defect-free performance and highly competitive costs.

6. Involve, align, and empower your associates. The people who do the work every day are process experts who know how to reduce or eliminate waste. Aligning your managers and staff to a company culture committed to inquiry, responsibility, partnership, and customer satisfaction can significantly impact warehouse productivity.

7. Educate your leadership to ask the right questions, gather necessary information, make decisions, and take appropriate, corrective action. This is vital to improving processes, products, and services.

8. Create a robust training program that incorporates cross-training. Break a job down and present the operation to new associates. Allow them to test their performance before releasing them to the process. This is more effective than the traditional sink-or-swim method.

9. Incorporate the use of TAKT time to achieve a steady fulfillment flow with standardized work instructions. By specifying the maximum cycle time allowed to produce a product in order to meet demand, TAKT time allows you to set targets by showing operators exactly where their work output should be at any given point.

10.Look at variation, not just averages, to increase productivity. This is the heart of Six Sigma: reducing variation—or variance—to make a process more stable and predictable. Find a significant measure that reflects your process, then reduce the variability of that process as much as possible.

6 Ways To Improve Productivity In Your Warehouse

As a general rule of thumb the more productive your warehouse is, the more profitable it will be. You will be able to turn around orders faster, which in turn leads to more satisfied customers and repeat and increased orders.

1. Maintain Employee Morale
It can be easy to overlook your employees’ needs, but there is a direct link between productivity and morale. There are plenty of ways, both big and small, to keep morale high. One of the most important of these is to ensure that the wages you are paying are a fair reflection of the work carried out, and offer wage increases periodically to keep in line with industry standards. If this isn’t possible, other employee incentives can work well too.

2. Improve Employee Comfort
Consider their comfort too; warehouse work can be tiring so it’s important to try to make the experience as comfortable as possible, with features such as air conditioning and soft flooring to reduce foot and ankle pains. Try to make sure that your employees have a rest area and access to a kitchen if possible. Even the smallest things can make a big difference – try installing a radio in your warehouse; many studies have shown that music can help improve productivity.

3. Invest In A High Speed Door
High speed doors react quickly, helping improve security, energy efficiency and overall productivity. There are many different rapid roll doors available on the market, with opening speeds of up to 2500mm per second. They can be controlled using the latest technology, including remote control access and motion and light sensors. The speedy opening and closing ensures that less heat escapes, improving the efficiency of your warehouse and saving you money.

4. Streamline Warehouse Layout
The layout of your warehouse is crucial to the speed at which an order is processed. It should be regularly reviewed to ensure that the process is as efficient as possible and that every square foot of space is being used efficiently. Ensure that similar items are stocked together, and that your inventory does not need to be moved unnecessarily. The layout should follow the chronological order of the journey an item will make before it is shipped.

5. Combine Orders
The time it takes for orders to be moved between various locations accounts for a large amount of time in most warehouse environments. Try to reduce this time by combining orders, using a batch or cluster order picking strategy. Zone picking can also provide an efficient solution, but this relies on your warehouse being organized correctly.

6. Upgrade Your Technologies
There are a wide range of technologies available to help make warehouse work faster and more efficient. One of the most obvious of these is the use of a conveyor belt. If this is not possible, there are many bar-code based systems and voice-activated technologies you can try to speed up the process.
