“My Friend Deceived Me Into Selling My Kidney, Collected the Money and Squandered It” — Victim
A man has recounted how his friend, Emmanuel Odeh, allegedly deceived him into donating one of his kidneys for money, only to collect the payment on his behalf and allegedly squander it.
According to the victim, Emmanuel introduced him to a man identified as David, who later connected them with an agent known as Ben. After undergoing medical tests, the victim said his kidney initially did not match the intended recipient.
He alleged that Emmanuel later contacted Ben again, who informed them that a compatible recipient had been found.
The victim further claimed that Ben told him his name would be changed to Hassan Abubakar as part of the process.
«“Ben then said that they were going to change my name, that I would be bearing Hassan Abubakar.”»
He said they were taken to the Federal High Court, where an affidavit was reportedly prepared before they proceeded to Wellington Clinic in Life Camp, Abuja.
According to him, they were given money in dollars late at night, around 10 or 11 p.m. However, as he was taken into the theatre, he handed the money to Emmanuel for safekeeping.
«“When I was going into the theatre, I gave Emmanuel the money to hold for me.”»
The victim alleged that Emmanuel later changed the dollars and used part of the money to purchase two phones, two power banks and two Wi-Fi devices, giving him one of each.
He said they spent almost a week at the hospital before Emmanuel took him to a hotel and subsequently transported him to Cross River State, where they allegedly stayed for nearly three months.
When he eventually asked Emmanuel about the remaining money, he said his friend told him it had been spent.
«“I asked him, ‘Where is the money?’ He told me that the money had finished.”»
The victim further alleged that Emmanuel claimed they did not have enough money for transportation back to Abuja and eventually sold his phone to raise their fare.
When asked whether Emmanuel had squandered the money, the man reportedly replied:
«“Yes, ma.”»
The victim also said Emmanuel had told him beforehand that his kidney would be removed but assured him that he would not experience problems afterward.
«“He just told me that it’s something that they’ll just ‘comot’, that there is no issue in there, that if they ‘comot’ it, I can still do everything that I want to do and that I will not have any issue.”»
The man confirmed that he knew about the kidney donation and consented to it. He said the incident happened sometime in April and that he was given amounts of $100 and $150, although he could not confirm the exact total he received.
The allegations raise serious questions about the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidney donation, the handling of the payment and the welfare of the victim.
