HOW I LANDED A $2K/MONTH RETAINER AS A FREELANCE COPYWRITER

My name is Jamiu Babs, and in early 2021, I landed a copywriting job with a top agency in the US that paid me $2k/month.

And in this short post you’re about to read, I’m going to tell you how I landed this job even though over 150 people applied for the same job.

I’ll also show you how to apply the same steps I followed so that “maybe” you can also land a job that pays you just as much.

Let’s get on with it.

First things first, I became good at writing copy.

Note how I didn’t say perfect or expert.

That’s because you don’t need to be perfect or be an expert before you start earning as a copywriter.

But you do have to be good.

You need to know how to assemble a persuasive copy from start to finish, and your copy needs to convert.

You don’t also need to be Gary Halbert or Eugene Schwartz before your copy converts.

Once you understand the basic principles of copywriting and you’re able to apply them to your copy, then you’re good to go.

Don’t be like most people who get lost in the “trap of perfection.”

The ones who keep learning and learning but never actually grow the balls to take action.

Get it?

Second, I created a prospect list with 100 high-quality and super targeted prospective clients that need my skills and might hire me.

I took my time to curate this list.

I didn’t rush, nor did I put any pressure on myself.

I researched slowly and found out everything there is to know about these prospects and put everything on a sheet.

Then I also made sure that all of the prospects on this list were in the same niche,

This is so that I can send the same samples to all of these clients, and it’ll still look like it was made specifically for them.

Third, I created top-notch samples.

I already had the skill.

I had even worked with a few clients and gotten results.

So writing samples that could impress any client was something I found relatively easy.

All I needed was a foot in the door – for them to see my samples – and I was sure I could close at least 5% of them.

By the way, 5% of 100 is 5.

That is, if I get the 100 people on my prospect list to see my samples, I have the chance to get five clients.

The juiciest part comes next.

How I got the attention of the people on my prospects list.

How many emails I sent and how many follow-ups I did.

How many calls I got on.

The questions I was asked on the calls.

How I finally landed the job.
