I made a compilation of 50 common graphic design industry terms along with their meanings.You may find one or two of them you haven't heard of before, or probably no one on this list may be new to you π

General Design Terms
1. Typography β The art of arranging type (fonts) to make written language legible and appealing.
2. White Space β Empty space between design elements that helps with balance and readability.
3. Contrast β The difference between two elements (e.g. color, size) to create emphasis.
4. Alignment β The placement of elements so they line up along common edges or axes.
5. Hierarchy β The visual arrangement that guides viewers through content in order of importance.
6. Grid System β A structure made up of horizontal and vertical lines to help organize content.
7. Composition β The overall arrangement and layout of elements in a design.
8. Balance β The distribution of visual weight (symmetrical or asymmetrical) in a design.
9. Scale β The size of an object in relation to others, used to create emphasis.
10. Proximity β Grouping related elements close together to show a relationship.

Typography Terms
11. Serif β Fonts with small lines or extensions at the ends of characters (e.g., Times New Roman). Fonts with extra edges.
12. Sans Serif β Fonts without serifs; clean and modern (e.g., Helvetica). Fonts without extra edges.
13. Kerning β Adjusting space between two specific characters.
14. Leading β Vertical spacing between lines of text.
15. Tracking β Uniform spacing between all characters in a block of text.
16. Font Family β A group of related fonts with different weights and styles.
17. Baseline β The imaginary line upon which text sits.
18. X-height β The height of lowercase letters (excluding ascenders/descenders).
19. Ascender β The part of a lowercase letter that rises above the x-height.
20. Descender β The part of a letter that extends below the baseline.

Color Terms
21. CMYK β Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black; used for print design.
22. RGB β Red, Green, Blue; used for digital screens.
23. Hex Code β A six-digit code that defines colors on the web.
24. Pantone β A standardized color matching system used in printing.
25. Opacity β The transparency level of an object or color.
26. Gradient β A gradual blend between two or more colors.
27. Monochromatic β A color scheme using only one hue with its tints and shades.
28. Complementary Colors β Colors opposite each other on the color wheel.
29. Analogous Colors β Colors next to each other on the color wheel.
30. Hue β The name of a color (e.g., red, blue, green).

File Types & Formats
31. Vector β Graphics made of paths, scalable without losing quality (e.g., SVG, AI).
32. Raster β Graphics made of pixels, quality degrades when scaled (e.g., JPG, PNG).
33. AI β Adobe Illustrator file format, used for vector graphics.
34. PSD β Adobe Photoshop file format, supports layers and effects.
35. PNG β Image format that supports transparency.
36. JPG β Compressed image format, smaller file size, no transparency.
37. PDF β Portable Document Format, used for sharing designs and documents.
38. EPS β Vector file format used for high-resolution printing.
39. DPI β Dots Per Inch; resolution for print (300 DPI is standard).
40. PPI β Pixels Per Inch; resolution for screens.

42. Mockup β A realistic representation of a design applied to a real-life object.
43. Template β A pre-designed layout used as a starting point for new designs.
44. Artboard β The area in design software where you create your design.
45. Layers β Different levels used to organize and separate design elements.
46. Smart Object β A Photoshop feature that preserves an image's source content.
47. Clipping Mask β A layer that masks the layers above it, used to control visibility.
48. Bleed β The area beyond the documentβs edge that ensures proper printing and cutting.
49. Margin β The safe zone around the edges of a design to avoid cutting off content.
50. Branding β The visual identity and personality of a business through design elements.
