WhatsApp is coming after Google Meet and Zoom πŸ‘€

WhatsApp is challenging platforms like Zoom and Google Meet by rolling out direct web calling, waiting rooms, and call transfers. These new features transform the messaging app into a fully functional, browser-based video conferencing tool.

Until now, you needed the WhatsApp desktop app for voice and video calls. Not anymore.

New Calling Features:

πŸŽ₯ Browser Calling: Make or receive direct audio and video calls on WhatsApp Web without needing a separate app.

πŸšͺ Waiting Rooms: Approve who joins group calls before they enter.

πŸ”„ Call Transfers: Move an active group call smoothly between devices without hanging up.

⚑ QuickHD: Enjoy high-definition video from the first few seconds of a call, instead of a gradual quality ramp up.

πŸ”‡ Noise Suppression: Block background sounds for clear audio in loud spaces.

For communication professionals, this is another reminder that the tools shaping how we connect, meet and collaborate are evolving fast, and staying ahead of these shifts is now part of the job.

Have you tried any of these features yet? Tell us in the comments πŸ‘‡

If you're a content creator, PR professional, marketer, or brand manager, this one is worth knowing about.

The Court of Appeal has just weighed in on a long running dispute between the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) and the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), and the outcome has real implications for anyone working with creative content and licensing in Nigeria.

Quick context: COSON's operating approval was suspended in 2018 and later expired. COSON went to court seeking to stop the NCC from interfering with its operations while a bigger case was still pending. Both the Federal High Court and now the Court of Appeal said no, ruling that an approval which had already lapsed could not be preserved by injunction.

Here's why these matters beyond the courtroom:

🎡 Copyright governance is not abstract. If you're using music in a campaign, an event, or branded content, knowing who actually holds the authority to license that work is essential.

🎨 The creator economy runs on trust. Songwriters, composers, and publishers deserve confidence that royalties are collected and distributed through properly authorised systems.

πŸ“‹ Compliance is now strategic. As AI and digital content continue to reshape the industry, licensing and IP governance are no longer side issues, they sit at the centre of how organisations operate.

The bigger picture? Digital influence isn't built on creativity alone. It's built on trust, ethics, and respect for intellectual property.

We'd love to hear from you: as the creator economy grows, how can communication professionals, brands, and creators build a culture that values both creativity and copyright compliance?

Throwback Thursday

Four years ago, we launched the Digital PR Digest to commemorate the 7th edition of the Nigeria Digital PR Summit. It was a modest unveiling at L'Eola Hotel, Maryland, Lagos, where the then President of the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN), Israel Jaiye Opayemi, officially presented the publication to Summit delegates.

Also in attendance were our strategic partners and associates, including Thelma Okoh, Babajide Benson, Comfort Obot Nwankwo, Olabamiji Adeleye, Nosakhare Uwadiae, Esq., and Oguchukwu Okeke, PhD, among others.

What began as a bold idea has since grown into a respected thought leadership platform, featuring richer editorial content, a broader range of contributors, and deeper industry insights.

As we prepare the fifth edition of the Digital PR Digest, we are strengthening the publication further, with an expanded Editorial Advisory Team and the guidance of the Nigeria Digital PR Summit Advisory Board shaping this year's edition.

The journey continues, and so does our commitment to documenting ideas, shaping conversations, and advancing the practice of digital public relations.

Here's to four years of thought leadership and many more to come.

Your Instagram bio is one of the most overlooked personal branding tools.

A great bio does more than introduce you. It helps people discover your profile, understand your expertise, and decide whether you're worth following.

Before updating your bio, ask yourself:

β€’ Who am I?
β€’ What value do I provide?
β€’ Why should people trust me?
β€’ What action do I want them to take?

Small changes can significantly improve your visibility and personal brand.

How often do you review your Instagram bio?

MONDAY SPOTLIGHT

Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada is the substantive spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs Service, an agency whose communication mandate spans trade policy, enforcement action and revenue matters, delivered to a public that often only hears from Customs when something has gone wrong.

Border enforcement is contentious by nature. Seizures generate headlines before context does, and policy changes on duty and tariffs affect livelihoods overnight. The person managing that desk needs institutional literacy, message discipline and credibility. DC Maiwada speaks plainly about what the role requires. "PR is not just about information dissemination," he has said. "It is about relationship building, maintaining credibility, and ensuring that every Customs officer becomes an ambassador of the Service's integrity."

His path to the role was not accidental. He was enlisted into the Service as a Cadet ASC II in 2011 and rose through communication facing postings, serving as Zonal Public Relations Officer for Zone B and Public Relations Officer for Ogun Command. In 2020, he became the pioneer Liaison Officer of the Nigeria Customs Broadcasting Network, before serving as Deputy National Public Relations Officer and, from April 2023, as substantive spokesperson.

He has also spoken about moving Customs communication towards a more evidence led approach. Speaking at an APRA event ahead of Nigeria's hosting of the 2026 APRA Annual Conference, he said, "Public relations has moved from the era of assumptions to a profession guided by evidence. At Nigeria Customs, we are applying data analytics not just to shape narratives, but to measure impact, evaluate stakeholder perception, and make informed communication decisions." This sits alongside his academic background, which includes a Master's in Mass Communication from Crescent University, Abeokuta, and a Doctorate in Media Arts from the University of Abuja.

He is a recipient of the 2020 World Customs Organisation Meritorious Award and the Best Spokesperson of the Year 2023 Award from Image Merchant Limited. Under his leadership, the Public Relations Unit received a further WCO Meritorious Award at the 2024 International Customs Day Celebration, and he personally received the 2024 Best Spokesperson Award from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the African Public Relations Association, the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, the African Council for Communication Education, the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.

06/07/2026

MONDAY SPOTLIGHT

Hakama Sidi Ali is the Acting Director, Corporate Communications and Investor Relations at the Central Bank of Nigeria, the institution that holds, arguably, the highest-stakes communications desk in Nigerian financial services.

Monetary policy decisions move markets. Regulatory announcements shift public behaviour overnight. Misinformation about banking stability can trigger panic withdrawals before a correction can land. The person at the desk must be quick, precise and authoritative. Hakama Sidi Ali has demonstrated, consistently, that she is all three.

Her appointment made history. She became the first woman to lead corporate communications at the CBN in the institution's over six-decade existence, a milestone that arrived not through advocacy but through a career built methodically within the same department. She had served as Deputy Director of Corporate Communications before her elevation, arriving at the role already fluent in the institution's language, culture and expectations.

What distinguishes her is the discipline of deliberate, pre-emptive communication. When banking sector rumours surfaced and public anxiety was building, she did not wait for the narrative to harden. "The CBN wishes to reassure the public of its unwavering commitment to ensuring the stability and reliability of the Nigerian financial system," her office stated, not as a routine press release, but as a structured act of public confidence management at a moment of genuine institutional vulnerability.

The same instinct governed her handling of foreign exchange misinformation. When inaccurate reports misrepresented the Bank's role in currency markets, she moved immediately to reframe the record. "Since the unification of exchange rates in 2023, the NFEM has operated as a market-driven system where foreign exchange is sourced and supplied by market participants, not allocated by the CBN," she stated publicly. One sentence. No ambiguity. Exactly the right amount of information to neutralise the story without amplifying it.

Knowing not just what to say, but precisely how much to say, is one of the rarest qualities in high-stakes institutional communications. Her department's trust restoration work during this period was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2026 IPRA Golden World Awards. She is a member of NIPR, APRA, and IPRA, and a two-time consecutive winner of the Outstanding Spokesperson in the Banking Sector award at the NIPR National Spokespersons Awards.
