Fayose writes Osinbajo, demands release of panel report on alleged corruption against SGF, NIA DG
Ekiti State Governor and Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, Mr Ayodele Fayose has written to the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, demanding the immediate release of the report of the investigative panel on corruption allegations against the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr David Babachir Lawal and Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mr. Ayo Oke.
In the letter dated July 11, 2017 and received at the Acting President’s office on July 13, 2017, the governor also demanded that the Acting President must “act expeditiously on the report”, threatening to approach the law court to compel the Acting President to release and act on the report if he fails to do so.
Special Assistant to the governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka said in a statement issued on Sunday that Governor Fayose told the Acting President “never to habour the view that the matter can swept under the carpet,” saying the government’s war against corruption lacked credibility and had, thus floundered because of the government perceived penchant for sweeping allegations of corruption against top functionaries of the federal government and members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I dare to say that this is one of the reasons the so-called war against corruption has not attracted public support. It lacks credibility and has, thus floundered. It is also the reason your administration has lost case after case in the court of law, even though administration officials have tried to cover government’s Achilles heel as well as their own howling incompetence under the pretence of corruption fighting back,” the governor said.
The latter read; “Let me begin by appreciating Your Excellency’s yeoman efforts directed at quelling fires all over the country and stabilizing the polity. Daunting as this task might seem, especially as agent provocateurs for selfish and diabolical interests continue to stoke the fire and fan the embers of discord and disunity rather than queue behind you, assist your noble efforts, and let all hands be on the deck to salvage our beloved country, take solace and receive renewed strength, vigour and vitality in the fact that your efforts have begun to yield positive fruits and that the vast majority of the citizens appreciate and applaud your efforts and stand resolutely with you. As I have often said, the power of the people is greater than the power of those of us in power. In our own little corner, we, too, stand with you. And this being so, you can only succeed, and not fail! Therefore, every support and every advice that Your Excellency requires to succeed we promise we will not hide away from you, partisan politics notwithstanding.
“In this wise, permit me, Your Excellency, to prod your memory about a Presidential committee constituted months ago by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate allegations of high corruption against two top officials of this administration, namely the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. David Babachir Lawal; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mr. Ayo Oke. The Presidential committee, headed by your good self, was given two weeks to submit its report. That was many months ago. The two top officials concerned were placed on suspension but nothing has been heard on the matter ever since. It would appear the matter has been swept under the carpet or, in the Nigerian popular parlance, has been treated as the “family affair” of the ruling APC government.
“It will be most unfortunate indeed if this, truly, is the case. For one, the appropriate response to the very serious issue of corruption against the suspended SGF and the NIA DG should not have been the setting up of a committee to investigate; rather, both men should have been handed over the two men to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation and arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction. Your Excellency will agree with me that this has always been this government’s recourse when alleged corruption cases involve members of the opposition PDP; estranged members of the ruling party. In fact, PDP members and non-members of the ruling APC alleged to be corrupt, such as judges, are first harassed, haunted, hounded, arrested and locked up, tried and convicted in the media and visited with public lynching while the Department of State Service (DSS) and the EFCC take their time to search for or conjure evidence against them.
“The preferential treatment given to the two top-notch members of your government is bad enough – and they are the only members of the ruling party that have got this slap-on-the-wrist treatment. So reckless and audacious had your government become in this regard that a serving Senator who is a member of your party said on the floor of the Senate that your government uses insecticides when dealing with alleged cases of corruption involving members of the opposition but applies deodorant when members of the ruling party are involved. I dare to say that this is one of the reasons the so-called war against corruption has not attracted public support. It lacks credibility and has, thus floundered. It is also the reason your administration has lost case after case in the court of law, even though administration officials have tried to cover government’s Achilles heel as well as their own howling incompetence under the pretence of corruption fighting back.
“Were President Buhari to be around, this issue would not have been any of your bother. All that would have been required of you would be to turn in your report within the stipulated time and the ball would then have been squarely in the president’s court. Fortunately and unfortunately, President Buhari has been away on medical tourism for most part of this year and as the Acting President, the buck now stops on your desk. Your Excellency, Nigerians demand two actions from you: First is that you release the report of the corruption investigation, which you presided over. Secondly is that you act expeditiously on the report. May I advise, Your Excellency, that you should never habour the view that this matter can swept under the carpet for two reasons. One is that Nigerians are not unmindful of the outcome of your investigation even if it has not been officially released. Two is that should you fail to release the report and act on it, I shall approach the law court to compel you to do so.
“Your Excellency, as a Law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Your Excellency must not be associated with illegalities and cover-ups; not to talk of your highly exalted position as a man of God who must speak truth at all times and uphold the Biblical admonition to let justice flow like the mighty river. I have refused to agree with those who, on account of your egregious stance on the EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu’s continued but illegal stay in office; posit that the hood does not make the monk and a chain of titles and degrees does not translate to sound judgment. Kindly take up the challenge to prove those doubting Thomases wrong.
“Your Excellency, because our dear country, Nigeria, is the concern of all of its 170 million citizens as well as for the benefit of our friends the world over, permit me to make copies of this letter available to the media and other interested persons and organisations locally and internationally.”

“ Nelson Mandela was an extraordinary human being. He put a strong “ truth and reconciliation” committee together . He was not insulting everyone and anyone . It earned him global respect .
Leadership matters when you want to heal a divided nation . Donald Trump hurls abusive speeches at every perceived opposition in sight and that has greatly damaged America” .
These were very punchy and incisive comments of Ed Luce , Financial Times Chief Commentator , on Fareed Zakaria on GPS on the night of Sunday, June 18 , 2017.
The opening topic was on why GOP Congressman and Louisiana Rep , Steve Scalise, was shot by an obviously disgruntled 66- year- old American who had nursed disgust for Trump’ s style of racially divisive politics. James T. Hodgkinson was lurking in dark shadows like an untamed reptile. He struck before anyone could cage him and dealt a great blow not through the injury caused Scalise but actually to the ideals of diversity America once proudly represented.
I have written against Trump before , published in Premium Times , describing him as a “ bad dream for a fragile world ” .
But nonetheless, I love Trump because he is down to earth, sometimes recklessly though , but again, you cannot fault his unconventional radicalised Republican brand of politics. Hate him all you like, he has millions of followers who look up to his “ rascally” tweets . In a democracy with all its faults, it is figures that still count . Trump will seem to have the figures albeit within a nation now beleaguered by naked hate and prejudice.
Having said this, there are learnings to pick in Fareed ’s GPS guests stance that a nation is full of divergent political interests , social alignments and cultural leanings; and therefore, you cannot be insensitive to the feelings of the led as a leader.
Nigeria: I have no doubt the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo , is probably genuine with his efforts aimed at harmonising various positions in this nation and bridge the divides. The same Sunday on
Channels TV , I saw his rapprochement with the South -East leaders. He has been to Cross River State , a few days ago ; he hosted the Emir of Kano , Muhammadu Sanusi II, to a very private meeting at the Villa.
Osinbajo is writing some plausibly good history as a strong believer in a compact Nigeria. Awesome.
But let me give the Acting President a piece of advice. David Blankenhorn , activist and president of “ Better Angels ” , does something for America that Osinbajo needs to do in Nigeria. His organisation brings grassroots people together despite political differences . His organisation believes people can get angry at one another , debate emotionally against one another , but they must all be heard with a sole focus on nation building and genuine healing. He strongly recommends a public square engagement .
Another guest on Fareed ’ s GPS warned against “ dehumanising ” Scalise ’s shooter, Hodgkinson , and painting him totally evil. He describes the shooter as a symbolic representation of certain hurt , frustrated and shattered feelings after Trump shaped America ’s political narrative with racial colorations . He wants this hush - tone section of the nation to be heard, understood and brought back to the mainstream .
The Acting President at this stage cannot engage with the elites and leaders alone while assuming that the real agitators are committing heresy. The anger and agitation are down here , Mr . Acting President . Those “ leaders” , I doubt , have the ears of the crowd you are trying to rein in . If they did, IPOB would not arise , OPC will not flourish and Arewa youths would not issue the ultimatum.
The Acting President must necessarily open up strategic and far-reaching processes of honest and robust engagements where every tribe is allowed to openly express where and how they have been hurt. Where no tribe feels superior to the other. Where citizens will now believe and trust the government . Where leadership is handed to competence and not federal character but also done and well-managed within the delicate thresholds of our interests and diversities. Where the Federal Government vacancies are not presumably filled up “ already by their children” despite paid advertorials . The government must identify with genuine youths who want to discuss without angling or positioning themselves for pecuniary gains. Many “ youth leaders” seize the microphone and utter gibberish once they have access to the media. The job of identifying the truly aggrieved and the honestly prepared in national discourse must be factored into our engagement template .
The executive , I dare say, must confront our fears and maybe revisit the 2014 national confab report which is about to evolve into a nuisance -value b***y trap ex- President Goodluck Jonathan inadvertently put in place for this administration.
Osinbajo must manage carefully how he serves into the hands of the National Assembly who are now demanding it without falling naively for a populist goal about to be scored against the Presidency . The Presidency has lost many recently .
I am still in doubt what the underlying motive of our senators are. If it is positive, great for Nigeria. Not a few though will be pleasantly surprised. On Channels TV a few days ago , even the then confab chairman, Senator Femi Okunrounmu, expressed reservations about the National Assembly ’s sudden interest in the report so soon after Senate President Bukola Saraki was let off the hook in a no- case submission and acquittal which Prof Itse Sagay has been losing sleep over. For the National Assembly to now open the books of the confab report will be a masterstroke move to “ buy- the- public” applause in a political chess game. But hey , who would not like us to discuss the issues tearing us apart for which we have been living in denial? In-here lies why the National Assembly may trounce the executive once again and silly too. If Saraki organises national grassroots forum today for these discussions , he would have a huge crowd. The Presidency must act fast , either play this game or glide painfully into public irrelevance .
Overall, we must all mean well for this nation no matter which desk we occupy . Corruption is still a damning monster and it is actually getting brazenly bold. Leaders should visit social media occasionally and find out to their utter shock how many people have lost faith in the government ’ s anti - corruption fight. We must go back to the drawing board and re-strategise. The Acting President should read the Chatham House report where a holistic approach involving grassroots behavioural change is recommended as a great tool for tackling corruption.
We must patriotically work towards building a nation where no one sees anyone as inferior. Where the Yoruba don ’ t feel the Hausa are “ hungry for power” and where the Igbo don ’t feel the “ Yoruba can ’t be trusted ” . I have met fantastic northerners , civilised Igbo and golden -hearted Yoruba. Those dividing us don ’t mean well for us. Their intentions are not beyond their ambitions.
This country is beautiful and holds a promise : But the frank realities confronting us cannot be skirted over. Doing so may damage us irredeemably.
Shall I say, God bless Nigeria? For those who believe there’ s some God somewhere, an amen may mean a lot at this critical moment in our nation’ s history .

MUST READ!
Jakande was sentenced to jail just like his boss, Awolowo. But Jakande was crying in the court not because of himself but for Awolowo. When Awolowo saw him, approached him and asked him "why crying for only me..." Jakande replied "I don't mind going to jail and even adding your terms to mine, why South.West, why is it that the only Premier in Nigeria that will be jailed is the Premier of my Region?"
Awolowo replied "Dry your tears, God sometimes keep his own away when danger is approaching...."
And that was what happened!
The reason why Nigeria didn't break in 1967 was Obafemi Awolowo. Gowon said "I needed him badly more than I needed the Nigerian Army".....Why? Two reasons;
1. The original rallying point of the Yoruba was Awolowo. If Yoruba supported the break up, no Jupiter can stop it. Therefore, to keep Nigeria one, Awolowo must endorse it!!!!
2. The wisdom of Awolowo was unequalled, unparalleled and unrivalled. His wisdom must not be on the side of the rebel, Nigeria would not survive without it.
No wonder the two Warriors Gowon and Ojukwu said and I quote;
"I am the luckiest ruler of Nigeria because the best Nigeria asset in person of Chief Awolowo was my Vice Chairman and Finance Commissioner..."- Gowon.
"Chief Awolowo is the best President of Nigeria that never was..."- Ojukwu.
Need I say more?
Murtala Mohammed had ensured in his Transition Programme that Shehu Shagari would not contest but after his death, OBJ relaxed the rules.....Shagari was allowed to contest and won but in 1984, Buhari stopped Shagari again, describing his election as "shamelessly rigged".......
NCNC was the popular Party in Lagos. They always won Lagos. And Awolowo's Action Group would have lost in 1954 if not for Madam Abibatu Mogaji the mother of JAGABAN who mobilized the Lagos women for AG!
THE SECRET OF AWOLOWO....
Awolowo deliberately spent a lot of money in establishing exclusive investments for the Western Region where he thought the SW Progressive Politics would be financed. He said "SW need stable source of fund to fight politically because a poor people cannot fight the Central Government..."
No one knew this secret until his Deputy had issues with Awolowo and leaked the secret to the opponent. He told them "fight Awolowo from now till forever, if you didn't destroy the Western Nigerian Investments, SW will always be buoyant financially and they will fight you and win you...." Wow!!!!! That was the end!!!
From that time, to cut the story short, SW was targeted! AWO was accused of fraud. Investments converted to Full state investment and later Odu'a Investment. And later, during the military regime, there was a time when all SW governors were non Yorubas, Odu'a investment was crushed. Cold dead!
But LAGOS of Tinubu reinvested the progressive interest in a more sophisticated way. MAY THE SECRET OF LAGOS NOT BE LEAKED THE WAY ENEMIES LEAKED THE SECRET OF SW!!!
The Story of Progressive Politics in Nigeria since 1954 had its Genesis from Awolowo's Palm Tree which, After processing, have its revelation from Tinubu's Broom!!!
No more No less!
We must never forget the families of Obafemi Awolowo, Lateef Jakande, Bisi Onabanjo, Bola Ige, Adekunle Ajasin, Ambrose Ali, Adebayo, JS Olawoyin, Anthony Enahoro, Abraham Adesanya, S.O Gbadamosi, Bode Thomas.....
These are first generation of progressive politicians who played progressive politics for life!!!
UP AWO!!!!
Simple but Notable. When Awolowo arrived Lagos from Calabar Prison, after meeting with Gowon, it was Murtala Mohammed who voluntarily drove Awolowo home, in his personal car. Murtala described the gesture(driving Awolowo) as a privilege!!!
Simple but Notable!!!
