DON’T JUST BE A HANDCRAFTER —PURSUE EXCELLENCE✅
Don’t just be a bag maker, cap maker, shoe maker, fashion designer, caterer, baker, bead maker, or any other kind of handcrafter. Pursue excellence.
Being able to make something is good, but being able to make it well is what sets you apart.
Recently, I was extremely busy and couldn’t create time to make a particular item that I am very good at making. Since I needed it urgently, I decided to patronize another vendor who also makes the same item.
I thought, “Since this person makes this too, I should be fine.”
But when I finally received the item, honestly, I was disappointed.
It wasn’t fitting.
I couldn’t use it the way I wanted to. In the end, I had to squeeze out time from my already busy schedule and quickly make another one for myself.
That experience reminded me of something very important:
There is a difference between knowing how to make something and knowing how to make it excellently.
As a handcrafter, don’t be satisfied with merely completing an order.
Ask yourself:
Is it neat?
Is it properly measured?
Is it well finished?
Is it functional?
Is it comfortable?
Will the customer be proud to use it?
Would I personally buy this from myself?
Your customers may not know the technical process behind what you make, but they will definitely experience the result.
They will notice when the finishing is poor.
They will notice when the measurements are wrong.
They will notice when the product doesn't fit properly.
They will notice when the quality doesn't match what they paid for.
And just as importantly, they will remember excellence.
The goal should not be to say, “At least I can make it.”
The goal should be:
“I can make it, and I can make it exceptionally well.”
Keep learning. Keep practising. Keep correcting your mistakes. Invest in better techniques. Pay attention to details. Don’t be offended when someone points out where you need improvement.
Whether you have been making bags for ten years or you just started making caps yesterday, there is always room to improve.
Don’t let the number of years you have spent in a craft become an excuse for poor quality.
Your hands carry your reputation.
Every bag you sew, every cap you make, every outfit you create, every cake you decorate, every piece of jewellery you produce and every handmade item you deliver is saying something about your brand.
So, fellow handcrafters, let excellence become your standard.
Don’t just pursue customers.
Don’t just pursue money.
Don’t just pursue visibility.
Pursue mastery. Pursue excellence.
Because when your work consistently speaks of quality, people won't have to be convinced for long.
Your work will speak for you.
