VACCINATION AND IMMUNOSUPPRESSION
Instances abound where Vaccines are given and yet immunity against diseases is not established. This could be as a result of immunosuppression. Immunosuppression is a situation in which the body's immune
system is arrested and made dysfunctional.
Certain factors makes the immune system to underperform. They are called immunosuppressant. Immunosuppression may be temporary or permanent. Gumboro disease (Infectious bursal disease virus) causes temporary suppression of the immune system of birds that are above 3weeks of age
The same Gumboro virus cause permanent suppression of the immune system in chicks below 3weeks of age.this suppression could be an important reason for vaccine failure.
Fungal toxins such as Aflatoxins suppress immunity, some bacteria diseases such as Escherichia coli(E.coli) infections cause
suppression of the immune system.
Newcastle disease also interfers with proper functioning of the immune system.
Diseases that cause immunosuppression make the body susceptible to other infections.
Other immuno-suppressants include:
---- Worms
----- Overcrowding
----- Stress
---- Malnutrition or Poor nutrition
---- Excessive temperature
---- Drugs such as Steroids
Its important for farmers and animal breeders to avoid exposing their animals to immuno-suppressants.
Proper biosecurity measures must be in place to forestall breakdown of immune responses.

*HOW TO PREVENT AND TREAT DROP IN EGG PRODUCTION**
By Dr kossy Anona

Many factors lead to drop in egg production. As soon as your birds (layers) begin to lose weight and become light, there is possibility of a drop in their productivity. This may arise as a result of many factors.

*Factors that Lead to Drop in Egg Production*

1. Lack of correct proportion of feeds
2. Sudden change of feed either from mash to crumble or vice versa
3. Bad management practices such as exposure to light for less than the minimum time required or more than the maximum time required. Minimum hours for exposure to light per day is 14 while the Maximum hours is 17.
4. Presence of Newcastle, Coccidiosis or salmonella infection
5. Worm infestation

*Prevention*
• Feed should be available at all times. When chickens are not well fed, egg production decreases
• Clean and cool water must always be available to avoid heat stress. Lack of water results in reduced egg production
• Always add the right quantity of salt when preparing feeds because low salt in feed result in sharp decrease in egg production
• Vaccination is very important in preventing diseases and subsequent drop in egg production.

*Treatment*
If you are already experiencing a drop in egg production in your farm, kindly evaluate the above-mentioned factors and determine the one that applies in your situation. If it is managerial factors, ensure that you take correctional measures by adhering to safe management practices. However, if it is disease infection, the following treatment can be administered:
• Administer *Fatro Biovac Lasota Vaccine* and *Interleva* once in a day for a period of two (2) days.
• After successful administration of Biovac Lasota and Interleva for two (2) as stated above, administer *Nemovit* or *Introxin WSP* for 5days.
• Where watery or brown stool is noticed, give *Amprolin-300* for 5days or *Intracox* for 2days.

*MANAGEMENT OF POULTRY BIRD DURING COLD SEASON
During the cold season especially in the Northern part of the
country, poultry farmers are likely to observe a marked drop in
egg production, laying of small eggs and poor weight gain in their
chickens especially broilers, sexual maturity is delayed in pullets
and these birds may turn out to be poor layers, birds may not
reach peak production during this period and chick mortality due
to lower temperature may be observed. Most of the energy used
by the birds are to maintain their body heat ,thus re**rd it's
growth as stated earlier.
Bigmoh Animal Care Services: suggest to strictly follow the below
recommendations:
1) Oil or fat can be added to feed and energy levels in the feed can
be raised to meet the higher energy need of the bird, the bird
need more metabolic heat to maintain body temperature and as a
result more amount of subcutaneous fat need to deposit .low
temperature causes more feed intake and high oxygen demand.
Therefore ,when the weather gets colder, it is essential to give
chicken plenty of feed.
2) Feeders should always be full.
3) provide warm water if possible, because during this colder
period birds take less water.
4) Medication during this period should based on pulse dosing or
waterers are removed few hours prior to medication. Consult your
Vet.Doctor.
5) Care should be observed during Vaccination at this period.
Vaccine is given in less amount of water so that birds can
consume total water and each bird get benefit of vaccine.
6) Side curtains can be used if possible during this severe cool
and drafts thus sealing the house from cold draft.
7) Stock density of the flock can be increased during this period
only.
8) The time period for brooding chicks during this period of cold
should be extended.
9) Cooler temperatures are immunosuppressive and thus
predispose birds to infectious agents endemic in that farm
environment. Use of kepro Vit E, Selenium and Vitamin C to
increase the immune response.

Free Feed Formulation For Broiler Finisher and Use of Oil in Poultry diet

Poultry production is a business, which like any other enterprise seeks to generate profit. This is done by keeping production costs as low as possible. But it doesn't mean that you wont spend on feed. Dont forget GARBAGE IN - GARBAGE OUT
Feed cost is about 60 -70% of the total cost of production, and energy alone contributes about 70% of the feed cost. Poultry eat the amount of feed that approximately meets their energy requirements. Therefore it is very crucial to formulate high energy diet for them. From research, they consume a daily amount of food that is approximately 5% of their body weight.

The amount of energy fed to broilers is affected by the age of the bird. The implication of this is that the stage of growth dictates which physiological processes are important. Furthermore, the ability of the bird, given the size and capability of the gut to utilize certain nutrients, also determines the level of nutrient inclusion.

Christmas is fastapproaching ,The only thing we can use to increase the energy of the feed is by adding oil, but in using you have to be very careful about the weather. If you include oil in feed in tropical region or hot environment the feeding pattern have to change i.e, you feed around 6:30 am - 1 p.m. then you serve them cool water till 5.00pm. This will reduce heat stress.

Advantage of using oil in broiler diet.
The fat included in the diet increases the amount energy provided to the bird.

Besides providing energy to the bird, adding fat into poultry diets helps reduce dust, which may have adverse effects on bird health.
It also increase the palatability of the feed

Note:
Vegetable oils are highly digestible and are therefore the best source of energy for farm animals. Oils are expensive because of the competition with human food, which limits its use when formulating least cost rations

An antioxidant should be added to diets to prevent the fat in the feed from becoming rancid, especially during hot weather, because high temperatures accelerate the oxidation of fat. U can use thymol /kg, Vit E ALSO IS A GOOD ANTIOXIDANT.

We are in the heat period!
The extremes of weather where the diurnal temperature becomes wide ..Viz cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon and cool to cold at night. This type of temperature changes causes unseen, yet palpable stress in your birds which can result in poor lay for your birds.
So what do you do? This weather situation will subsist till the rains which in the case of the north may not be until June and July. The farmer in you has to take charge and control the weather as best as you can.
Going through some literature I came across this write up which i think we can benefit from.
Please not that whatever the temperature you here ours is at least 10 degrees higher so you can imagine what your birds are going through and will go through over the next few months.
Note also that you be sure to have your *vitamin C* constantly in your farm as well as *Glucomol* a combination of paracetamol and glucose for energy and your favourite anti stress *Stresroak* which should be administered regularly.

Heat stress strategies for layers in hot climates
Heat can have a significant impact on layer flocks, but there are measures that can be taken to keep hens healthy and producing eggs.
Heat can have a significant impact on layer flocks, but there are measures that can be taken to keep hens healthy and producing eggs. When summer temperatures rise, egg producers need to be ready or they will see egg output decline, and flock mortalities increase.

The comfortable ambient temperature for poultry is between 18 and 24C. Above this, birds fail to maintain their normal internal body temperature (41.6C), due to the absence of sweat glands and complete feather coverage of the body. When the ambient temperature rises above the ideal, a chicken’s internal body temperature also rises, leading to a drop in feed consumption (>26-32C), heat stress (>35C), panting, prostration (>35C) and death (>38C).

Failing to manage heat stress results in poor layer production performance, and it should be remembered that older birds and heavier birds are more sensitive to heat stress than younger and lighter birds. Heat stress can be managed by altering the macro- and micro-environments where birds are housed.

Four specific areas can be easily managed to ensure that laying hens are kept as comfortable as possible during hotter months and that egg production is not reduced. These are:

*Housing management*
*Water management*
*Feed fortification*
*General management*
*Adjusting the poultry house environment*

Measures can be taken in hotter climates to minimize the impact of heat on layers:

The long axis of the poultry house should be in an East-West direction, and the roof overhang should extend to at least 1.5 meters to reduce the amount of direct sun and rain entering the house. Paste or paint the shed roof with a reflective covering. General best practice is to whitewash the roof with lime. This can reduce the house temperature by up to 2C.
Cover the layer house roof with insulating materials such as paddy straw, sugar cane leaves, coconut leaves or hay.
Provide ridge vents at roof level to allow hot air to exit, so that cool air may enter the poultry shed through side openings.
Outside of the house, attach sprinklers onto the roof. Turning them on during hot weather will bring down the temperature inside the house.
Use of side curtains – gunny bags can be used to protect birds from direct hot wind currents. Those bags facing any oncoming winds can be kept wet so that birds feel a cool breeze. Adopting this practice can reduce the temperature up to 2-3C.
Inside the poultry shed, attach foggers at bird level to reduce the temperature. Fog should be kept to a fine mist only, to prevent the birds, litter and feed from becoming wet.
Planting tall trees around the farm can help to reduce radiant heat.
Water management
During hot weather, chickens pant to bring down their body temperature, and this leads to a higher-than-normal loss of water, so plenty of drinking water must be available, but it must be managed carefully. Provide three to four times the normal daily amount.
Do not completely fill the overhead water tank during the hotter summer months, and conduct flush-outs during the day to slow down any heating of standing water. If possible, cover the tank with wet gunny bags and paint it with a reflective covering.
Increase the frequency of watering. Birds must always have access to cool water.
Giving birds salt will stimulate their water consumption. Supplement drinking water with 0.2 percent salt and commercially available electrolytes (1-2 gm/liter) to maintain birds’ electrolyte balance.
Vitamin C and citric acid can be added to drinking water, as the latter is a good carrier for vitamins during the summer. Supplementing vitamin C through water has been found to more beneficial than adding it to feed.
Feed supplementation
As layer hens’ feed intake tends to reduce during hotter months, they should be fed with supplemented diets, so that egg production is not reduced.
Layers prefer high energy (in terms of fat calories) and low protein (2- 3 percent less than normal) diets with balanced amino acids (in terms of lysine and methionine). Supplementing feed with respect to energy should be done in the form of fat calories only, and the following are worth keeping in mind:
Replace 10-15 percent of feed energy normally supplied by carbohydrates and proteins with 1-2 percent vegetable oil/fats.
Substitute 20-25 percent of de-oiled rice bran with oiled rice bran. This will not only ensure that the feed is rich in fat calories, but it will also prevent feed becoming dusty so making it more palatable. Use only fresh oiled rice bran, and keep only 1 week to 10 days’ supply to avoid oxidation of stocks.
Supplement the layer feed with amino acids in line with feed intake. Replace DL-methionine with methionine hydroxyl analogue and betaine.
Increase the calcium content of the diet from 4 percent to 5 percent.
Replace 40-50 percent of any salt in the diet with sodium bicorabonate to help maintain egg shell quality.
Vitamin and mineral premixes should be increased by 25 percent, with particular attention paid to vitamins C, A and E.
Supplementation with additives such as synbiotics, phytobiotics, acidifiers and dextrose( *Glucomol*) can also help in alleviating the heat stress.
Feed birds as specific times. One-third of the feed should be given in the early hours of the day, 4-5 a.m., and the remainder later in the day, noon-1 p.m. It is beneficial to dim the lights while feeding, in order to reduce physical activity and hence heat load on the birds. Feed should be stirred in the feeders. During hotter months, birds wet feed with saliva, which can lead to caking in the feeder, the growth of mold and production losses.
A good mycotoxin binder such as *Toxiroak* should be added to the poultry feed.
General management
A minimum-maximum thermometer should be hung inside the poultry shed to check temperature variations during the day. The application of any medicines or vaccines, debeaking and any movement of the birds should be carried out during the cooler part of the day. When medicines are administered, there should be plenty of cool, fresh water available as well as quality feed. Anti-coccidial drugs, however, should be used with caution and selectively during hotter weather as some can aggravate heat stress.

*Importance of Weighing in Livestock Production* .

Weighing is crucial for all farmers to avoid the loss of money. Yes we all know that.

But do we know how to use weighing scale or weigh accurately?

Weight is the most revealing and important factor in selection and production as well as animal performance as a whole.

Some of the factors as to why weight is crucial in animals:
*Weight is very effective in assessing the reproductive efficiency and growth performance in birds.
If your birds are underweight wahala and if they are overweight bigger wahala...
*It can be used in determining the health status of an animal when measured in relation to its age. For example: an animal loss weight is an indication of poor health and, on the contrary, gaining it shows that the animal is in good health.
*Weight can also be used in measuring the correct dose of drugs to treat animal diseases, to avoid the risk of underdosing or overdosing.
Oga manager stop using eyes to measure drugs. ö dighi mma(It's not good). Simple utensil like table spoon(1 tbs is approximately 15 gram) can help measure drugs near accurate and luckily weighing scale is available in stores around at a very cheap price...
*Weight can be used to determine the correct amount of feed an animal can get, to avoid underfeeding or overfeeding.
*It also allows you to determine the possible values of the live animal in relation to the market price.
*Weighing also helps in determining the weaning time of an animal. As well as to predict the growth of the calves by analysing the captured data and studying the performance graph.
In conclusion: By taking steps towards focusing on weighing, you can control costs and possibly increase your production; grow more confident in the analysis of your business; how to go forward with adjustments and also be assured that you are giving the most accurate, transparent records when dealing with third parties.
