MASSOB DIRECTIVE ON CHURCH MEMORIALS FOR CIVIL WAR VICTIMS ILLEGAL AIMED AT DISRUPTING THE PEACE IN THE SOUTH-EAST

The attention of Headquarters Operation UDO KA has been drawn to an illegal directive issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), directing churches in the South-East and parts of the South-South to hold memorial services in honour of civil war victims.

Headquarters Operation UDO KA empathises deeply with families who lost loved ones during the civil war and acknowledge the sacrifices made to keep Nigeria united. The memories of those who paid the ultimate price remain indelible in our national consciousness. However, it is important to emphasise that there are already established national occasions legally recognised by the Federal Government to honour our fallen heroes. These include the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Nigerian Army Day Celebration, and Nigeria’s Independence Day. These solemn occasions provide lawful platforms for reflection, unity, and remembrance.

Operation UDO KA remembers with compassion the sacrifices of the fallen heroes which can never be forgotten. However, true honour, lies in unity, peace, and lawful remembrance, not in illegal directives by some irredentists aimed at sowing division and causing panic in the region.

The directive by MASSOB is therefore illegal, provocative, and must be disregarded by all. Any gathering or activity outside the framework of lawful national commemorations is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The Nigerian Army is aware that sympathisers of MASSOB and IPOB resolved to issue this illegal order to create chaos. Clerics, Innocent citizens and youths are therefore strongly advised to stay away from such plans, which are designed to destabilise the peace enjoyed in the entire Southeast.

Operation UDO KA wishes to reassure the general public, including churches, that they should go about their services and businesses without fear of intimidation. Any individual or group that disrupts public peace or religion activities will face the full weight of the law.

The Nigerian Armed Forces in collaboration with other security agencies remain committed to safeguarding lives, property, and ensuring peace across the South-East.

In History: Rare glimpse into Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s years in uniform

A renewed public interest has emerged around the early life of prominent Islamic scholar, Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, following the circulation of accounts and images from his years in military service before he became one of Nigeria’s most recognised religious voices and public commentators.

Before fully dedicating himself to religious leadership and advocacy, Sheikh Gumi reportedly served as a commissioned officer in the Nigerian Army, an experience believed to have shaped many of his perspectives on national security, conflict resolution, and dialogue-driven approaches to peacebuilding.

Over the years, Sheikh Gumi has remained an influential figure in conversations surrounding insecurity in northern Nigeria, particularly issues related to banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency. He has consistently advocated negotiations and peaceful engagement with armed groups, maintaining that dialogue could help reduce violence and restore stability in affected communities.

His views, however, have continued to generate mixed reactions across the country, with some Nigerians supporting his peace-focused approach while others have criticised aspects of his public interventions on security matters.

Sheikh Gumi also comes from a respected Islamic and public service family. He is the son of the late Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, one of the most influential Islamic scholars in Northern Nigeria during the 20th century.

The family’s legacy of service has reportedly continued into another generation, with reports indicating that his son, Abdulrahaman Ahmad Gumi, graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy in 2025.

Observers say the resurfaced military-era accounts and images of Sheikh Gumi offer a lesser-known insight into the formative years of a figure who later became deeply involved in Nigeria’s religious, social, and security discourse.

International Boys’ Day: NAOWA, NASWA Mentor Students on Discipline and Responsible Living in Abia State

The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), 14 Brigade Chapter, commemorated the 2026 International Boys’ Day with an impactful educational outreach programme aimed at mentoring young boys in Ohafia, Abia State, on Monday, 18 May 2026.

In a statement signed by Captain Muyiwa Ayara for the Assistant Director Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, Ohafia, the programme was themed “Safe Spaces, Strong Futures: Raising Today’s Boys for Tomorrow’s Greatness.”

The outreach was organised by the Coordinator NAOWA 14 Brigade Chapter, Dr Shafa’atu Sada Dikko, on behalf of the Chairperson NAOWA 82 Division Chapter, Mrs Hilda Ijeoma Fadairo, as part of ongoing efforts to mentor and guide the boy child toward responsible living, discipline, and academic excellence.

The programme targeted students from Command Secondary School Ohafia and Federal Government College Ohafia, where participants were sensitized on the importance of character building, emotional intelligence, responsible decision-making, and goal setting for a brighter future.

Delivering an inspiring message on behalf of Dr Shafa’atu Sada Dikko, the Coordinator emphasized the need to create safe and supportive spaces where boys can freely express themselves, learn from their mistakes, and develop into responsible and emotionally intelligent men.

She noted that society often places unrealistic expectations on boys to suppress their emotions and conform to rigid stereotypes of masculinity. According to her, true strength lies not in aggression or material success but in discipline, integrity, empathy, education, and respect for others.

Addressing the students directly, she urged them to avoid drug abuse, resist negative peer pressure, remain committed to their education, and show respect for women and humanity.

“We believe in you. You are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are the vibrant energy of today,” the address stated, encouraging students to take the lessons from the programme seriously and apply them in their daily lives.

The educational outreach featured lectures delivered by specialist officers of the Brigade. Captain KA Ojutomori, Medical Officer at the 14 Brigade Medical Centre, delivered a lecture on drug and substance abuse, highlighting social, psychological, and biological factors responsible for youth addiction while warning students about its long-term consequences.

In another lecture titled “Strong Futures,” Major J Opadiejo, the Brigade Education Officer, enlightened the students on the importance of discipline, moral character, commitment to God, academic dedication, financial responsibility, and avoidance of negative influences.

He also advised students to use social media productively for learning, personal development, and positive engagement rather than as a tool for distraction.

The event also featured an interactive question-and-answer session where students freely engaged with the speakers, shared concerns, and received practical advice on personal development and career aspirations.

Representing the Commander 14 Brigade, the Chief of Staff, Colonel MS Maaji, delivered a goodwill message encouraging the students to remain disciplined, focused, and determined to become responsible citizens capable of contributing positively to national development.

In her closing remarks, Mrs Theresa Gilbert, representing the NAOWA Chairperson 14 Brigade Chapter, called on parents, guardians, and teachers to continue guiding boys with patience, love, and strong moral instruction so they can grow into compassionate and responsible leaders.

Also speaking, the Director/Principal of Federal Government College Ohafia, Mr Ezeoba Micheal Emeka, commended NAOWA, NASWA, and the guest speakers for their commitment to mentoring and positively shaping the lives of the students through the outreach programme.

He further called on international organizations and stakeholders to support similar initiatives, stressing that society often overlooks the unique challenges faced by boys growing into adulthood.

As part of the event, plaques were presented on behalf of the NAOWA Chairperson’s representative to the Principal of Federal Government College Ohafia and the Commandant of Command Secondary School Ohafia in appreciation of their support toward the success of the programme.

The event concluded with votes of thanks, group photographs, and renewed commitment by the organizers to continue supporting initiatives aimed at promoting the mentorship, protection, and empowerment of the boy children.

Troops of 14 Brigade Record Major Security Breakthroughs in Abia

Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 14 Brigade have recorded major operational breakthroughs in Abia State following a series of intelligence-led operations targeting suspected criminal and separatist-linked networks.

The operations, conducted in close collaboration with the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies, led to the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of illegal fi****ms and other incriminating items across different locations in Abia State.

According to a statement issued by Captain Muyiwa Ayara on behalf of the Assistant Director Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, the operations were launched following credible intelligence reports indicating the activities of suspected gun-runners and criminal elements linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) within the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility.

To strengthen the operations, Headquarters 14 Brigade sought additional technical intelligence support from Headquarters 82 Division Nigerian Army. In response, a DIA Tracking Team attached to the 82 Military Intelligence Brigade was deployed on 28 April 2026 to assist troops in carrying out intelligence-driven operations across identified flashpoints.

One of the early successes was recorded on 30 April 2026 when troops, in conjunction with DIA operatives, arrested a 37-year-old suspect, Emmanuel James Amah, at Obinto Village in Ihiechiowa, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State. During the operation, security personnel recovered various denominations of Biafran currencies, including shillings and pound notes, believed to be associated with pro-Biafra activities.

In a separate operation conducted on 4 May 2026, troops working alongside DIA and DSS operatives apprehended another suspect, Ukonke Dickson Jacob, at Ohambele in Ukwa East Local Government Area. Preliminary intelligence revealed that the suspect was allegedly involved in the movement and supply of illegal arms across parts of the South-South and South-East regions.

Security authorities disclosed that the suspects and recovered exhibits are currently undergoing further investigation as efforts continue to dismantle criminal networks operating within the region.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment, alongside other security agencies, to sustaining ongoing operations aimed at ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens. It also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist security agencies in combating criminality and safeguarding national security.
