_Summary of Today’s Activities of NIOB Kaduna State Chapter_
Today’s activities started with a visit to the Director General of Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KASUPDA) Bldr. Abdulrahman Yahaya (PhD). @Bldr. Abdurahman Y The meeting started with an opening prayer followed by introduction of Excos of the NIOB Kaduna State Chapter anchored by the secretary Bldr Cyril Ofozor, who also read the address of the National President of NIOB, Bldr Sir Alderton Ewa Ewa. The address majorly stress on the need to shun building collapse and quack practice, and also call for excellence, safety and professionalism in practice.
The APWBN Chairperson, Bldr Mrs Margret Shwrka and the Kaduna Chapter Deputy Chairperson of APWBN Mrs Halima Lanti also commented and pleaded on the need for the DG to keep on to the bright end on the issue of Builders document. Bldr Adamu Godwin Aboki the financial secretary of the chapter also appreciated the effort of the DG for the support he has been given NIOB Kaduna Chapter and the building profession in general.
In his remarks, the DG KASUPDA Bldr. Abdurrahman Yahya (Phd) responded where he began by emphasizing on the need for builders to be identifying themselves as builders wherever they found themselves. He made mention of some of the contributions offered to NIOB among which are the implementation of stage approval where builders are inculcated, introduction of Builders document as part of requirements for obtaining permit of commercial developments in the state, registration of consortia which would handle the issue of builders documents and then the creation of certification of habitation and fitness which shall soon be implemented. The DG reiterate that the enforcement of Builders document shall soon commence, stressing that KASUPDA is for the professionals and professionalism not for a particular profession.
Furthermore, the DG mentioned some initiatives achieved since he assumed office, saying that based on KPIs, it is expected that he should must have achieved 30% of his plan by the time he celebrates 1 year in office. Some of the initiatives mentioned include; Special permit Unit (SPU) who are responsible for processing express permit and Instant Permit, he also added that the technical and project team are currently working on the Data center and modern integrated lab.
In addition, Both Development Register and Annual Report will be launched in April 2025.
While concluding, the DG raised concern about the low number of applicants among SIWES students and NYSC members, within the building profession. He said while addressing the students "We hope Built Environment will be saturated with professional builders, make effort to register, be determined, persevere, and work hard because without these you are going nowhere".
Finally, the DG concluded by enlightening the students on the need for mentor - mentee relationship giving example of the internship to be soon launched at Yahya Hub, Unguwan Rimi, as he said to the students "we will continue to drag you until the time you will see light".
The visit ended successfully with group photographs and the team headed to NDC for Sites visitation, the planned press release couldn’t hold due to some unavoidable reasons from part of the Sponsor.
