08: Get your first meeting right.
Touch base on the ‘what you want’ and ‘what you can offer’ dynamic. Get clear on what you can offer this person in particular – keep it in the back of your mind as a way to give your interaction some purpose.

09: Be proactive with the follow-up.
Lead the way with keeping in touch and adding clear value for the other person, so they know they’re a priority for you.

10: Keep checking in.
Find the level of interaction that works for you and each of your – and don’t just reach out when you need something.

Your existing friends and business contacts all know people you don’t – actively reach out and see if they’d be OK with linking you up.
05: Get out there in person.
A good place to start is among people actively looking to network – like at small-business meet-ups.

06: Get out there remotely.
Look for industry-specific groups and communities on platforms like Reddit, Slack, LinkedIn or Facebook. Follow and interact with the social channels of similar brands or those you aspire to emulate.

07: Get your first interaction right.
Be prepared – put in some research on your new connection to show you’re serious about building a relationship.

03: Set measurable goals.
Whether that’s ‘reach out to five people a month’ or ‘attend three events per quarter’, putting numbers on it will force you to get out there and begin building relationships.

Having a diverse group of people you can speak to about business has A LOT of benefits. Alongside mitigating the feelings of isolation that many founders experience, there are also the more tangible benefits: connecting to new customers, establishing brand partnerships, finding great hires, keeping on top of trends and generally accessing new opportunities. The word ‘networking’ carries plenty of baggage – so it’s perhaps better to think of this instead as relationship building with a dynamic of mutual support. Sharing knowledge and opportunities with like-minded people is fun and productive – if you do it right.
