A factory uses solvents during production.
Environmental aspect: Release of volatile substances.
Environmental impact: Potential air pollution.
A diesel generator is another example.
Environmental aspect: Fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
Environmental impact: Resource depletion and air pollution.
This distinction matters in ISO 14001 because identifying an aspect is not the same as identifying its impact.
You start with what the organisation does and how that activity interacts with the environment. Then you consider the environmental changes that can result.
If your aspects register simply lists environmental problems without clearly connecting them to your actual activities and processes, it is worth taking another look at it.
Good environmental management begins with correctly identifying the relationship between the activity, the aspect and the resulting impact.
