LARGE FORMAT PRINTING TIP

If your large format printer is producing lines across your banner, do not rush to blame the print head.

Those lines are often called banding, and several things can cause them.

It could be blocked nozzles, incorrect print settings, poor material feeding or a problem with the printer calibration.

Here is what you should do.

First, run a nozzle check to see if any nozzles are missing.

Next, check your print settings, especially the pass count and print quality.

Then inspect the material feeding and make sure it is moving correctly.

If the problem continues, check the machine calibration and investigate further.

One important thing: do not start changing random settings without understanding what they control.

You might solve one problem and create another.

A good large format printer operator does not just know how to print.

He also knows how to identify problems and troubleshoot them properly.

Save this tip. It could save you material, ink and the cost of a reprint.

Do not ignore the material you are printing on.

Two materials can look similar but behave differently inside the machine.

The way the ink sits on the surface can change.

The colour can come out differently.

The material can feed differently.

Even the final appearance can be affected.

That is why I always advise printers to know the material they are working with before starting production.

Do not just load any material because it is available.

Ask yourself:

What am I printing?

Where will it be used?

What quality does the customer expect?

Which material is suitable for the job?

Good printing is not only about having a good machine.

The material matters too.

Know your machine.

Know your ink.

Know your material.

That is how you get better results.

Do not start printing immediately after receiving a customers design.

Check the file first.

I have seen simple mistakes turn into expensive reprints.

Wrong size.

Wrong spelling.

Wrong phone number.

Low quality image.

Missing information.

Sometimes the customer is in a hurry and says:

“Boss just print am.”

Please, take those few minutes to check.

Because once that design enters the machine, you are already spending ink, material, electricity and time.

And if the mistake is discovered after printing, somebody has to pay for the reprint.

Before you press print, confirm the important details with the customer.

It is better to delay the printing by five minutes than to waste the whole job.

PRINTING TIP

Before you print any banner, sticker or large format job, check the size twice.

It sounds simple, but this mistake can cost you money.

A customer asks for 8ft by 4ft and you prepare 8ft by 3ft.

Or the customer sends a file that was designed in a completely different size.

If you do not check before printing, you may only notice the mistake after the machine has already started working.

And by then, the ink, flex, electricity and time have already been wasted.

Before I print any job, I like to confirm:

The exact size.

The number of copies.

The spelling.

The phone numbers.

The orientation.

The material.

A few minutes of checking can save you the cost of reprinting the whole job.

In printing, measure twice and print once.
