Kemi Badenoch's statement that she feels little connection to Northern Nigeria is most disappointing. Even if it is true, why not keep such a tidbit to yourself? Yes, she is Lukumi Yoruba, but the Lukumi are, to borrow the phrase of the now famous documentary, 'Bigger than Africa'.

Therefore, to say that "I identify less with the country than with the specific ethnicity (Yoruba)" is rather shortsighted for a woman who wants to lead a multiethnic, multicultural and multi-religious society like the United Kingdom.

These are the types of comments we expect from IPOB leaders like Nnamdi Kanu and the 'content creator' Simon Ekpa, not from a woman aspiring to lead one of the oldest democracies on Earth.

Even her claims of identifying with the Lukumi Yoruba are suspect. Scottish politicians in the UK routinely wear their kilts. And those of Celtic origin display their cultural heritage publicly. Has Mrs. Badenoch ever worn an A*o Oke, or other Lukumi Yoruba fabric, material or design in public?

That statement was just mere rhetoric.

Mrs. Badenoch cannot stay in the United Kingdom and divide us in Nigeria. We shan't have that at all! We are one Nigeria. One nation under God. And we will not permit that to be threatened by an ethnic irredentist.

And Mrs. Badenoch demonstrates a surprising level of ignorance when she says, β€œI have nothing in common with the people from the north of the country, the Boko Haram where Islamism is."

First and foremost, that statement is inaccurate. There is much more to Northern Nigeria than Boko Haram. In fact, there are nineteen states in Northern Nigeria, and even in its heyday, Boko Haram was limited to just three of those states: Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.

In recent times, because of the success of a Northerner, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, as National Security Adviser, their presence has been limited to Borno, and even there, it is fledgling.

I shudder to think of what would become of Nigeria-UK relations should Mrs. Badenoch ever become Prime Minister. She is making many in Nigeria dread what we once anticipated.

While I condemn the Senate for buying foreign-made SUVs, that is not why the Naira is ₦1310 to a dollar. The reason behind the sudden drop is because the Central Bank of Nigeria abruptly stopped the decades-old practice of defending the Naira with $1.5 billion every month. It is not because of any act of bad governance. It is a deliberate fiscal policy known as floating the Naira.

Before this, we were spending more money subsidising the Naira than we were spending on fuel subsidies. And as a result, we were subsidising imports. The idea behind the policy of floating the Naira is that Nigerians should change their consumption habits and buy more made in Nigeria goods. That way, the $1.5 billion a month can be spent on something more productive. It is a good policy, which all of us should support.

77 million Nigerians use MTN. Another 60 million use Airtel. That is 137 million people spending $20 million daily on data and phone calls. That money is going to South Africa and India. If those 137 million people spend on Glo, the Naira will rise.

25 million Nigerians spend an average of $15 monthly on DSTV. That is $375 million going to South Africa. Last year, Nigerians spent Β£25.3 million on 644,452 bottles of imported champagne. We spend $75 million on imported whisky. Those funds are leaving our economy to service the British, French and South African economies.

Nigerians also spend nearly a quarter of a billion dollars importing human hair, bleaching creams, fake eyelashes and other cosmetics. This is more than we spend importing books. The funds are going to India and Asia, and those countries are not buying made-in-Nigeria goods.

Please fact-check me on all these data.

So Paul, given these consumption habits, if you were President, would you continue to invest $1.5 billion in subsidising the Naira so your citizens can waste it on such mundane things? Perhaps not.

You can actually play a role in growing our economy. You post photos of yourself on social media wearing foreign designers and jewellery and powerful cars. Of course, it is your money, and you can do whatever you want with it. But if you are going to criticise the drop in the purchasing power of the Naira, it may not be a bad idea to lead by example and post photos of yourself with made-in-Nigeria clothes and other products once in a while. Otherwise, you will be telling your followers to do what you are not doing.

Thanks for your time, and may God bless you.

Instead of spending four years reading a course like sociology, philosophy, anthropology, political science, library science and so on at university, just go and learn a high income skill like nursing, cloud computing, blockchain engineering, artificial intelligence, web design, coding, programming, ethical hacking, and analytics, for between six and eighteen months. You will earn more in a lifetime than most university graduates. The world has changed. Many university courses have expired. They belong in a museum. Maybe a few people can read them to preserve some knowledge. But when you have hundreds of thousands studying them at degree level, they will never find real life applicable jobs for those degrees. And they and their courses end up being a drain on society. Get a skill instead of a semi-useless degree! And stop looking for loopholes. Those courses are dead and gone. They are like aerial cameramen. You cannot streamline an aerial cameraperson to compete with a drone. Accept reality and make better educational choices, and stop putting good money behind lost causes. Truth is bitter, but better!
