MY SCHOOL SYNDROME

One of the viruses that can frustrate the growth and development of a private school is the “My School” syndrome.

This virus makes some school owners resistant to great ideas and, at times, causes them to make irrational decisions. Often, such school owners fail to establish appropriate structures and systems that can support sustainable growth.

A school owner is an investor, but the school has other important stakeholders whose contributions can significantly influence its success.

Corporate executives understand that one tree does not make a forest. They therefore encourage their teams and other stakeholders to share great ideas, which they carefully consider and implement when appropriate. This openness to ideas contributes significantly to the growth and success of their organisations.

If you want your school to achieve exceptional results, learn from what great institutions do. Be open to ideas, build effective structures, listen to your stakeholders, and continuously seek better ways of doing things.

Your school may belong to you, but its success requires more than your ideas alone.

PRIVATE SCHOOL MARKETING: YOUR TEACHERS ARE YOUR MOST POWERFUL BRAND AMBASSADORS

One of the greatest misconceptions in private school marketing is the belief that social media alone can significantly increase student enrolment. While social media is useful for creating visibility and enhancing a school's image, it is rarely the deciding factor that drives sustained enrolment. Personal relationships, referrals, reputation, and purposeful community engagement remain far more effective.

I recently watched a video questioning whether teachers should be involved in marketing their schools. My response is simple: if teachers do not promote their own school, who is better positioned to do so? Teachers interact daily with parents, pupils, and members of the community. They understand the school's strengths and can speak about them with credibility and confidence.

Every private school should make teacher participation in school marketing part of its organisational culture. This expectation should be clearly communicated during recruitment and reflected in the letter of appointment. Schools may choose to make participation voluntary, but teachers who actively contribute to enrolment growth should receive appropriate recognition and incentives.

Successful private schools understand that marketing is not the responsibility of the proprietor alone; it is a shared responsibility. Every satisfied parent, committed teacher, and successful learner is a potential ambassador for the school.

Teachers who embrace school marketing are not merely helping the school—they are developing an invaluable leadership and entrepreneurial skill. Many of today's teachers will become tomorrow's school owners, and the ability to attract and retain learners will remain one of their greatest assets.

School marketing is not an event; it is a culture. Every teacher should be a proud ambassador of the school they serve.

*Going the extra mile; The mindset of an outstanding private school teacher*

A teacher in a private school must first understand and appreciate that private schools operate differently from public schools. Beyond teaching, a private school teacher must be committed to delivering measurable results and making a visible impact on the growth and success of the school.

To go the extra mile, a private school teacher must develop the following qualities:

1. Professional discipline: Be punctual, well-groomed, and always dress appropriately in line with the school’s dress code and professional standards.

2. Excellent communication skills: Build positive relationships, communicate confidently, and speak effectively without intimidation.

3. Continuous development: Be receptive to training, acquire multiple skills, embrace digital competence, and demonstrate the ability to function effectively across classes and departments.

4. Innovation and initiative: Bring valuable ideas to management meetings, confidently present them, and take responsibility for implementation when approved.

5. Strong relationship management: Be patient and professional when dealing with parents while confidently defending genuine educational issues.

6. Teamwork and leadership: Relate well with colleagues, lead discussions when necessary, and successfully handle special assignments.

7. Commitment to school growth: Participate actively in attracting new learners, with a target of contributing to the enrolment of at least three new students per session, while maintaining excellence in all responsibilities.

These expectations are measurable within three months, six months, and one year. Every teacher should be able to evaluate their progress and identify areas requiring improvement.

If your school does not have a formal appraisal system, seek one. Appraisal provides an opportunity to demonstrate your value, contributions, and impact.

Going the extra mile is not a theory or philosophy; it is a practical expectation for every private school teacher who desires excellence. Your relevance is demonstrated by the positive difference you make in the success of the school.
