🐓🐍 When Snakes Visit the Poultry Farm…

Last year, a farmer in Osun lost 18 broilers in one night. The culprit? A snake that found its way into his pen. For him, it wasn’t just about losing chickens — it was the pain of wasted effort, money, and sleepless nights.

This is the sad reality many poultry farmers face. Snakes are silent predators. They don’t just kill birds, they also cause stress that makes your flock eat less and grow slower.

But here’s the good news — you can protect your chickens if you act early:

✅ Keep your pen environment clean — snakes love tall grasses and woodpiles.
✅ Use wire mesh or netting on openings to block their entry.
✅ Scatter substances like kerosene-soaked ropes, sulfur powder, or carbolic acid around the pen (snakes hate the smell).
✅ Raise the coop floor slightly above ground level.
✅ Always check for small holes or cracks where snakes might sneak in.

👉 Losing even one bird hurts, but losing a whole batch can break a farmer. Don’t wait until it happens to you.

Layer farming refers to the practice of raising hens specifically for the purpose of commercial egg production. It involves raising young female chickens (pullets) from one day old until they begin laying eggs, typically around 18-20 weeks of age. The hens then continue laying eggs for a period of time, usually until they are around 72-78 weeks old, at which point they are often culled and sold for meat.
Key aspects of layer farming:
Raising Pullets:
Layer farming starts with the rearing of pullets, which are young female chickens raised for egg production.
Egg Production:
Layer hens are bred to lay a high volume of eggs, and their productivity is carefully managed through proper nutrition, lighting, and environmental control.
Profitability:
The profitability of a layer farm depends on the difference between egg sales revenue and the costs of raising the birds, including feed, housing, healthcare, and labor.
Culling:
As hens age and their egg production declines, they are typically culled (removed from the flock) and sold for meat.
Manure Management:
Poultry manure is a valuable byproduct of layer farming and can be used as fertilizer for crops.
Types of Layer Hens:
Layer hens can be broadly categorized based on the color of the eggs they produce (e.g., brown egg layers or white egg layers).
Housing Systems:
Layer hens can be raised in various housing systems, including litter-floor sheds, wire-floored cages, or battery cages
