Where are your works?

Two years ago, I needed to upgrade my social network and in order to do so, I had to look around for an influential figure that would serve as a mentor for me.

Honestly, the search wasn't easy but I was able to get the attention of one of Nigeria's top trainer and consultant.

And of course, looking for a man that influential was one thing and getting his attention was another thing. In a future post, I will share about how I succeeded in getting his attention.

But when I finally got to meet him, he shocked me with the question, "where are your works?"

At first I didn't seem to understand what he meant until he said ............

Have you heard about the story of a man who was faced with a problem and right under his nose was the solution to his problem? In case you haven't heard about the story, I will briefly share it with you.

Many years ago before diamonds began to be mined, a young man inherited a land full of diamonds from his father After inheriting this large piece of land, he began to pride himself as influential because in those days, people are rated based on the size of their land. Although this man happen to have a large piece of land, he finds it difficult to feed himself because he had no money.

Wow, 2018 has almost ended but before you draw up that New Year resolution or your goals for 2019, I would like you to take a journey many don’t like taking.

It’s been said that “the journey of a thousand mile begins with a step” and for your own good its best you begin the first step in the right direction.

The year 2019 is filled with so many opportunities to exploit but you can only access these opportunities if you begin the journey into 2019 in the right direction.

What step then should you take first that would lead you in the right direction? The first step that would make 2019 a fruitful and memorable year for you will be taking a step into self-discovery.

It’s so sad that many have good plans for themselves but the plans haven’t come into fruition because their effort is been sabotaged by themselves.

Many have been drafting goals and New Year resolutions whenever it’s time to go into a New Year, however, when they finally enter the New Year, they found out that they weren’t able to actualize any of the goals.

The reason the goals, the New Year resolutions and aspirations haven’t been actualized by you is because you are too focused on the hardware of your life while paying little attention to the software. No matter how big your dreams are, they will only remain dreams if you don’t work on your software.

Did I hear you say, what’s this dude saying?

Which one is software and hardware again? How do they determine my future?

Don’t worry, I will take you on this journey of self-discovery and open you up to ways you can self-actualize in 2019 starting from tomorrow 31st December, 2018.

CREATE YOUR FUTURE DAILY

Do you know that you are just where you need to be right now? Do you know that what you are experiencing right now is not because the world hates you but because you created it? Do you know that you have the ability to move from where you are to where you want to be?

Do you know that you owe no one any explanation for achieving any result in life? Do you know that nothing is impossible for you to achieve in life? Do you know you are just a step away from achieving great result in your life and career?

Life as they say do not give us what we expect but what we demand. What are you demanding from life? We are always demanding something from the universe whether we are aware of it or not. While some are demanding a life full of wealth and prosperity others are demanding a life full of poverty and lack. There is a notion that life is not fair but even though this may be true, you can position yourself in a way that it can be fair to you.

Am sure someone will be asking the question “How do I position myself in a way that life can be fair to me?” Taking a cue from the game of soccer, what separates a great player from an average player are skills and positioning. In relation to life, skills can simply mean having competence in your field. In the game of soccer, every player in the team is looking for a team mate that is positioned well to receive the ball so that he can pass the ball to him.

Going further every team player is looking for a player who is best positioned to score a goal. No matter how good a player is if he is not in the position to score a goal, he might not receive the ball because it is players who are well positioned that have the biggest opportunity to score.

Positioning ones’ self for a life of wealth and prosperity requires a conscious attitude. I was reading a book (talent is overrated) last week that says expert are those who have gone beyond doing their job unconsciously to now doing it consciously. Positioning yourself requires that you consciously and intentionally create your experience by putting yourself in the position you would like to be.
For someone who would like to become a medical doctor, you will have to daily see yourself diagnosing and treating patients. For someone who want to become a model, you will need to consciously see yourself modelling for the best modelling companies in the world. For those who want to run a multi-billion dollar organisation, you have to consciously see yourself signing and negotiating multi-billion dollar deals.

Miracles don’t just happen, they are created. Why not create your miracle today. Successful people are those who consciously create their future expectations daily. Do you act in a way that agrees with what you are dreaming about? It’s a conscious effort. Why not create your future today by acting it out instead of just wishing for it.

Consciously acting your dreams out daily positions you in the right place where the universe can send opportunities your way.

REFUELlING
My most dreaded moment in a public transport is when the driver navigates into a depot for refuelling. I get angry because he’s not only slowing my journey down but several other people who are on board and the thought that comes to me at such period is “why didn’t he fill up the tank with fuel before picking up passengers?”

Sometimes it could get worse when the bus stops at the middle of the journey because it doesn’t have a fuel gauge to assess the level of the fuel. This is the worst thing that can happen to anyone on a public transport because it keeps you stranded.

In life we either get stuck or waste time because we do not refuel at certain periods of our life. We are in a world where people no longer refuel their tanks instead they choose to fast, pray and even hope for luck to shine on them so that they can move on to the next phase of their life.

I think it's a criminal offence for anyone to ask for a position that he’s not prepared for because his ascension to such positions without preparation (refueling) will slow other people attached to him from moving forward.

Today you see an employee who is not qualified to be promoted seeking after promotion because he feels that it is time whereas he has not refuelled himself for the next phase he is aiming at. One of the worst place anyone can be is to be under a leader who has stopped growing, a leader who has stopped investing in personal development. Just as automobiles need refuelling in other to get to their destinations, we also need refuelling if we want to achieve our desires.

When was the last time you read a book on your profession? When was the last time you went for a training, workshop or seminar in your profession? Are you just flipping papers and filling registers at the office or you are building capacity in your profession?

No matter how we decide to play it, we will always be found out one way or the other; the result will either be stagnancy or progress. No matter how fast a car is, its speed would always be a potential if it is not refuelled and as this applies to a car so also it applies to human beings. Our potential is unleashed whenever we give ourselves to personal development and it is stifled anytime we refuse to develop our capacity.

As long as a car would be in motion it would always need to be refuelled so also as long as we desire to keep breaking new grounds in life, we must refuel ourselves daily with personal development. We are all responsible for whatever states we find ourselves whether good states or bad states.

KEEP STANDING

Warren Buffet once said “No matter how great the talent or efforts, some things just take time. You can’t produce a baby in one month by just getting nine women pregnant”. Great achievements are not easy to come by because it requires a price to be paid.

One book I love dearly says “having done all things, stand” and this can be interpreted to mean “having expounded all energy, stand”, “having done all is required, stand”. I could hear someone say “I have done all I know but it’s not working”, please my advice is “stick to it”. I could hear some other person say “I have put in all the resources into my career or business but nothing is working”, my advice remains “stick to it”.

There is a story about a young man who fell in love with a beautiful young lady. His love for her so consumed him that he could not sleep for many weeks and because his lack of sleep has started taking a toll on his health, he made a decision to go and speak to her.

The following day, he waited on her at a particular junction he had always seen her ply and after some few minutes of waiting, she passed by. As she passed by, he beckoned on her and told her he would like to have a brief discussion with her.

At first she was surprised because this was the first time someone would seek her attention and not waiting to hear what the guy had to say, she asked him a stupid but intelligent question “How did you see me?”

The guy was dumb because to him the question looks stupid but because of his quest to win her love, he agreed to look stupid for the moment and replied her by saying “I was able to see you because I have two eyes”. The lady laughed out loudly and told the guy “eyes that look are more but eyes that see are few” and as she turned to take her leave the guy ran before her, now on his knees, he begged her to hear what he had to say.

Out of pity she listened to what he had to say and when he was done, she revealed her identity to him saying “I’m the goddess of wealth and I’ve been sent from my kingdom to give wealth to anyone who is ready to pay the price”.

At this point, the guy’s interest doubled because he realizes now that once he can get her, he has automatically gained wealth; so he asked her what he had to do to get the both of them. The lady told her that the only way he could get her and the wealth was that she would have to become human and once she becomes human, she will change into a little girl and he must raise her till when she is ripe for marriage.

Without thinking deeply, he agreed to pay the price and immediately the girl turned into human and became a toddler. Looking left and right to be sure if anyone was looking, he carried her, took her to his house and began to raise her like his child.

After taking care of her for seven years, he was ready to give up because he has almost exhausted his resources. He didn’t know that all he needed to break-even and begin to get wealth was for the girl to become eight years old. The girl actually set this time because she realized that it takes only a determined man to wait that long and not quit. The guy not privy to this information, decided that since he has come this far, he is not ready to give up the resources he has invested in her.

On the night preceding day she would clock eight years, something mysterious happened. There was a heavy rainfall like nothing that have ever been seen before in the history of mankind and as heavy as this rainfall was, no one in the neighbourhood knew about it because the gods put them all to sleep.

The flood moved valuables (gold and diamonds) from different houses and transported them to the guy’s house and the flood disappeared. When he woke up, he almost ran mad by what he saw and not understanding what was happening, he raced down to see if the girl was still in his house. As he opened the door, he saw that the girl has grown into a matured beautiful damsel and he said “finally my investment has paid off”.

History do not remember men and women who quit but will always remember men and women who stood their ground when there was no reason to keep standing.

STEP INTO IT

Thinking deeply on this topic took me back into a scene that happened many centuries ago where I could hear the voice of a great leader asking the almighty God for the next action to take. The people he was leading were mounting huge pressure on him, thereby causing his soul to be wearied.

He looks to the heavens from where his help comes from because he was now at a cross road betwixt life and death. I forgot to tell you how he found himself in this situation and I’m glad I remembered early enough so that you can have a full grasp of my discourse.

The man is referred to be one of the greatest leaders who have ever touched the face of the earth because he was daring. He was daring enough to challenge a high class dictator such as Pharaoh when no one dare not to do so. He was man enough to lead millions of people out of the jaws of a beastly and inhuman character like Pharaoh and this has made these millions of people to look on him as their saviour.

He has made these millions of people hope again when they previously have lost all hope and now he is at the centre of the stage being watched by millions of eyes.

To the multitudes who have gained freedom from a lifetime of slavery, they see him as a being who is in a class all by himself. They marvelled at his bravery and the confidence he exudes when he negotiated their release from their taskmasters and now their hope of getting to their destination hinges on his leadership.

As long as he keeps moving, they kept moving but along the way they all found themselves in between two choices in which one has to be taken. They either go back into slavery or they move ahead into the red sea.

At this point, the one who gave them hope was now being perceived as their undoing just because they have come face to face with a resistance. They fail to realise that every achievement is preceded by a resistance and this resistance was stationed right at that spot to cause men with great dreams and aspirations to give up.

This man Moses was confused and clueless at this point because right behind him he could hear the sound of the Egyptian chariots and before him was a great sea known as the red sea. He was helpless and decided to seek help from the all-powerful being and all he could hear from this all-powerful being is “TELL THEM TO STEP INTO IT”.

At this point he lost it and almost lost his belief in this all powerful being but when he looked back, he saw his testimonies and how this powerful being had helped him, courage came into him and he took the first step into the sea. As he took the step, the multitudes followed him and as they step into the sea, these seemingly mighty ocean which was seen as a barrier parted and they passed through into freedom.

I challenge you to step into that mighty ocean that is in front of you because all you need to get what you want is to step in. Would you do like David who accidentally met Goliath and went for him or will you be like King Saul who was terrified by Goliath.

This Goliath before you which is a typical representation of the mighty ocean or barrier before you must be defeated for you to become who you are destined to be. The reason you are afraid of starting that business is because you don’t have money but why not start it anyway and see how provisions will come around.

One of my mentors in the person of Seun Oyetunji once said to me “provision is for men of vision who are on a mission”. The provision you need for your vision will not come until you take that first step and look you barrier in the eye. Don’t you know that fear flees when it sees courage staring at it?

I watched a video on youtube some months ago about some group of men who stole a meat right from the mouth of a pride of lion. These group of men are called Dorobo hunters or Massai men and they hail from Kenya. They say in my native land “no one dares take a meat from the mouth of a lion” but these three guys called the Dorobo hunters confronted these lions and stole their meat.

These lions saw courage in these eyes of these men and left their prey because fear cannot stand courage. I challenge you today to step into that barrier in front of you with a daring courage and you will see that all that has been stopping you from achieving your dream is just a four letter word called “FEAR”. I challenge you to “STEP INTO IT”.

HOW RELEVANT ARE YOU IN YOUR FIELD

Last week I shared on the topic “build your brand”. In building your brand or branding yourself, it’s very important that you get exposed to the latest information and materials in your field or else you will keep building your brand till thy kingdom come and no one will notice you.

It’s no longer a news that any organisation that will thrive in this age must embrace innovation and make it top on their priority in strategy making. So the question is are you exposed to the latest information and technology in your field?

Not practising the course I studied in the university for five years was a great concern for my Dad. I really don’t know why he was just adamant that I practise surveying but after much persuasion on my path, he gave up on the issue and bought into the idea of my consulting and training career. During the period of me trying to convince him, I had an experience that exposed me to the unconventional way some people practise their vocation.

To practise Land Survey, you have to be very good with the practical aspect of it and because I lost interest in it while on campus, I never bothered to pay close attention to how to carry out surveys. So I would always tell my dad that “I can’t carry out surveys accurately so I don’t think I need to be a surveyor”, then one day he said "what if I go out to learn it?"

At this point I was angry because I knew the stress involved in learning the profession and that was one of the reasons I hated the profession. Anyways I agreed to learn but I told him that I didn’t know of anyone who could train me, this was to make him give up but I forgot that my Dad was a Mario, once he want to get something done he would always look for a way out. At first I thought I had won but after few days he came up with the contact of a surveyor who I could learn under and this was where my plans got spoilt.

The next day I put a call through to the surveyor and I was able to get the address. The location was easy to trace and as I got to the location, I called the surveyor to signal him that I was around. The next thing was that I saw a man wearing only a short nicker and holding his cloth which was a buba top by hand welcome me. We shook hands and I almost hit is pot belly because he was not putting on any cloth.

At this point I began to say that “Sam you don enter one chance today” because I wasn’t expecting to see what I saw. After exchanging pleasantries, he took me to his office and when I got into his office, I looked around and discovered that there was no computer in his office. So I was like “how does this man carry out his office work” and this began to validate my earlier suspicion.

Even though I didn’t like surveys, I still carried out some Survey practicals while in the university so I understood the processes involved. I realised that one of his employees or in a more direct way, one of his boys was still using the outdated methods of survey; the method used before the advent of computers. So as not to be in a haste to conclude I just assumed he was trying to check something or something else.

During our conversation, he told me that I didn’t look like someone who want to learn survey because of the way I was dressed. In my mind I was like must I wear rags before I look like someone who is willing to learn. He took me on a tour to see the other trainees that were training under him and I saw them working with outdated equipment. They were not exposed to the latest technology and that alone sealed it for me.

When I was done with him I told him I would be resuming on Monday and that was the last day I stepped my feet there. On getting home, I explained my experience to my dad and he was wowed and that was how he never disturbed me again.

We live in a microwave world where people want to get excellent service as quick as it can be so “are you keeping abreast with the latest information and technology that can make your services better and also faster”? Don’t forget people know where they can get value for their money and no matter how far they would have to travel to get it, they don’t mind.

Your brand gets bigger quickly if you discover what’s next in your industry. Competence alone is not just in doing your job well but much more in using the latest and relevant resources to do it well.

BRAND YOURSELF

In the early hours of the second day of this week, I was in the studio with some senior colleagues of mine trying to preview a video of an artiste which happened to be my boss.

While previewing the video, a different discussion ensued between the video editor and myself. He said his church would be holding a concert in December and he would need my service on the piano as the standby pianist for the concert. He went on to ask for my charges and I made sure I took time to give him a reply because I didn’t want to overcharge and as well didn’t want to undercharge.

I asked him questions relating to the time and other logistics for the concert so as to be able to come up with the right charges for my service and as I was about to let the cat out of the bag, my boss who happened to be the artiste whose video we were working on intervened on my behalf. He widened my horizon by breaking down the concert into different phases and attached a price to them and adding them up we came to a price. At first, the video editor didn’t agree to what my boss and I agreed to charge but due to our insistence he gave in to our demand and we got it settled.

I think we would have to discuss “the art of negotiation” in one of our seminars someday. I have not gotten to the juicy part of the story and this is where it got interesting for me. The video editor then went on to announce the names of the guest artistes and the amount that will be given to them. At first I had no issues with the amount of money but I started having a problem with it when he said “we will give Mr A which is the artiste the sum of 300,000 naira and we will give his boys 50,000 naira”.

Now this got me infuriated because I could not understand why the artiste which is one man would be given six times what his band members (who on an average could be up to five people) would have to share. I got thinking and it dawned on me that the artiste was being paid more than his band members because he was already a brand and so what they are paying for is not an individual singing but the brand that the artiste had built overtime.

People don’t necessarily pay for your skills but what they pay for is the brand or in a more direct way, what they pay for is the name. This same video editor shared with us how Clearance Peters came to limelight. He said on arriving Nigeria after studying cinematography in South Africa, he went after artistes requesting to shoot their videos for them free of charge. He would spend his own money to do other logistics required to get the video ready and before you know it he started building his brand.

At a time when ten videos was played, you are sure to have seven to eight of these videos shot by Clearance and he jokingly said that today to get Clearance shoot your music video, you will have to pay him 5 million naira. This is the power of branding.

As I begin to round up, Horst Schulze said “whatever becomes the image of the organisation becomes the image of the individual but the individual creates the image at first”. When your name is mentioned, what image comes to people’s mind? If there is no image, then you can’t get paid handsomely no matter how competent you are but on the flip side, if the image that jumps on them is one that produces value then you can be handsomely rewarded even for rendering a little service.

The onus rest on us to build our brand by going out of our way to offer service to people even if they won’t pay. Let’s go out there because the image people conceive about us determines the rewards that comes our way.

THE PARABLE OF THE SEED AND BREAD

A section in one of my favourite books says “for as the rain and snow comes down from the heavens, and return not there again, but water the earth and makes it bring forth and sprout, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater; ……..” and so my discourse today will be centred on “rain, seed and bread”.

There is a mathematical equation that can be derived from the three focal points of today’s seminar and they are:
a + b = c where a = rain, b = seed, c = bread where a is a constant
In summary we can also say,
Rain + Seed = Bread

The word “bread” is not limited to bread in itself but could also mean food items, house, job and every good thing we may desire. The word “rain” denotes opportunities while the word “seed” denotes human investment.

A human investment exposed to opportunity produces an expected result. We are always in two places in life: We are either a solution looking for a problem to solve or a problem looking for a solution.

In elementary school, the first arithmetic we were first introduced to was addition and in the law of addition, a result is only gotten when factors are added. This arithmetic was easy for every child to understand because this was the principle we were created to abide with but as we went higher in education, we were introduced to another arithmetic called Algebra.

In Algebra, we were given a solution and asked to find how the solution was gotten and this was where people began to dislike mathematics. Many people got confused because they don’t understand why they had to derive how the solution was gotten when they already have it. Life understands only the law of addition and that is why seeds are hidden in every living thing so that they can be replicated. Hidden in an apple or guava or any result are the sub-modalities that can reproduce them when exhausted.

Today we are either leading a life of addition or a life of algebra. A life of addition adds value to people and produces result while a life of algebra seeks after accomplishments without human investments.

Life is a teacher that will always send our ways algebras to test whether we indeed understood how we got the result we currently have before we are eligible to go to the next phase in life.

In life you are either adding value hence exhibiting the law of addition that makes for a successful life (that produces bread) or you are just collecting and remain stranded because life is pushing to you the law of algebra.

UNWRAP THAT GIFT

Gifts are always packaged that is why they have to be opened before they can be discovered. As it is with physical gifts so also it is with our inborn gifts known as talents. Wrapped inside everyone one are amazing gifts that needs to be unwrapped for the world to see.

If I were to tell you that I have sent a million dollars into your bank account, I believe the first thing you will do is to go confirm what I have said. This is easy because you can either go to the bank or use your mobile phone to confirm but what happens when I tell you that inside you is a treasure worth trillions of dollars. How do you discover such treasure?

This brings me to a popular story of a man who was living on a piece of land that had a great deposit of diamonds. One day he came across some folks talking about some treasure in the form of diamonds that was located in an unknown place. He got interested in the discussion when he heard that these deposits of diamonds if found could afford him the capacity to acquire anything he wanted, so he decided to sell his landed property in other to raise funds to go on an expedition for these diamonds. He sold the piece of land to a man who later found these large deposit of diamond on the land he sold.

Inside of you is deposited amazing inventions and creativities that the world have never known. Can you take the time to unwrap those gifts deposited in you?

Many of us are like Jean who was given ten pieces of designer suits and pairs of shoes wrapped in some of the most expensive wrapping sheets and still complains that he doesn’t have what he could wear to a cocktail party because he hadn’t taken the time out to unwrap them. He keeps praying to God daily and sometimes engage in fasting to speed up his prayers while all he’s praying and fasting for lies untouched in his wardrobe.

One of the great philosophers said “Man know thyself”. If I put this question to you “Do you know yourself?” can you answer in the affirmative.

Many of us know about the advent of the internet, some folks can explain the process of child birth right from when the s***m is released into the female reproductive organ, some can talk about the biography of great people right from when they were born but only few people know who they are. Only few people understand the depth of treasures hidden inside of them by the creator and that is why it’s just these few folks that get the plaudits today.

Are you tired of running commentary on other people’s achievements or you still want to remain a commentator? The last time I checked commentators in the game of sport are only there to echo the achievements of sports men and women who are playing the game. They are usually not seen because their job description requires only the recognition of their voice to inform sport lovers on the achievements of sports people. This is not to disregard or talk down on the profession but am referring to people who are not productive.

To feature in the game of life, you must know who you are and what you carry because lying dormant in you is a box of treasure that the world needs to see. I close with the quote I used earlier “Man know thyself”.
