WHAT IS YOUR DATA TELLING YOU?

One of the under-utilised, yet crucial aspects in most businesses is the redundant and repetitive information. Such information forms patterns.

They are repetitive; in them lie secrets to business success. Pattern is such a phenomenal thing. It takes place regularly in day-to-day business endeavours.

A pattern can guide you in making an informed and precise decision. Hence, most businesses do not pay keen attention to it.

One such redundant and repetitive piece of information is recording similar details repeatedly. When similar details recur repeatedly, they convey an inherent message, and such a message is always important.

Businesses spend on various things, and spending is usually documented. Businesses can study such patterns, learn how disbursements happen and decide whether the spending is justifiable. The same applies to sales, marketing, customers, productions, e.t.c.

Do you make use of your records? The answer you seek is lying in that unstructured information.

READ IT, IT’S IMPORTANT!

Have you ever wondered why people jump from one business to another? Often, it’s because they believe their previous venture isn’t sustainable. When asked how they know it's unsustainable, they might point to reasons like no sales, high competition, or soaring production and selling costs.

But here’s a question: did they consider these factors thoroughly and seek solutions? Many start businesses merely for the sake of doing business or for survival - which is understandable. However, did they truly estimate the business’s viability? Its strength? Its ability to adapt and thrive in the future? The competition? Or external and internal obstacles?

Now, let’s talk to you, the business owner. Do you possess the grit and skills necessary to succeed? Here’s something you might find hard to believe, not every business is the right fit for everyone.

So, don’t jump into it just because others are making money in the same field. Do it because it’s the right choice for you, after critical analysis and honest reflection.

IMPORTANT!

One attribute you will find common among us Nigerians is that we are a very reactive people – we react to issues. We are not proactive or take action when it is required. ‘If e never reach make them dey chase us we no ready to do the right thing.’ When a problem arises, we would be running from pillar to post. Before you know it, unethical practice will be wiggling its tail.

Oh, before you defend yourself, let me ask? Have you done everything required about the new TAX LAW and equally positioned yourself for its implementation?

You haven’t, right? Some people are still waiting for the government to cancel the new law or revert to the old law. If that is your stand, ‘you are on a long thing.’

The government will not run after you for now. But by the end of the year and onward, you either receive a notification from your bank stating that your attention is needed with the Nigeria Revenue Service, or the commission will serve you a letter. Either way is bad.

It is your job to get assessed, pay what is due and stay in compliance. It will do you a lot of good. Start today!

But! I know say you no go hear, no be you?

Well, I go dey here for you.

HOW TO REDUCE YOUR TAX

There are many things you probably do not know about the new tax law, and it is all the more reason you should pay attention to it. Or at least consult a tax practitioner. Doing so will keep you up-to-date.

Whether you are a business owner, investor, or individual, it is essential to understand the law.

One thing you might not know about the tax, which could be beneficial, is what is called the Administrative Cost under Deductible.

Administrative Costs are generally overhead of any business that cannot be directly attributed to production and sales. Hence, this deductible varies in its applications.

If you don’t know how it works, you cannot take advantage of it.

WHAT BUSINESS CAN I DO?

There is one question that I usually get from people. What business can I do? My first response is, I don’t know, because you are you! You know yourself better. You can only get help with what you present.

In my practice, I refrain from telling people what to do outright. But guide them to unveil the possibility of what can be done. Sometimes, I make recommendations for them to decide on.

To answer the question, in case you have such. What business can you do? What experience do you have? What is in demand or lacking? What deficiency can you spot?

In today’s world, some people are still looking for what passion is. They are in search of what makes them feel good or what they love. Something that brings them joy. What they haven’t realised is that passion is a burning desire. Passion can be a burning desire towards what you love or what you dislike. The thing is, there must be a driving force.

It is where Nigeria and Africa come in. As Africans, what is that thing you dislike that is begging for change, or needs improvement? That is your business idea!

Nothing beats a business that is well-equipped with proper knowledge. Building a successful business requires deliberate effort; the effort to acquire knowledge, which in turn leads to growth.

Are you being deliberate?

A MUST-READ: AS IT CONCERNS YOU AND TAXATION

Are you a tax man? You might ask. No, I’m not. As a business consultant, however, I have seen how easily people fall into tax trouble. With the new tax law and my firsthand experience where I saw a client pay six figures in taxes without earning a third of that amount, I am persuaded to write this article.

This piece aims to highlight how ignorance of the tax law can have serious consequences. Remember: ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law. Your lack of tax knowledge can be costly.

You might want to ask, Am I taxable? If you think you are not, think again. Check your bank statement: as soon as you earn just over 800k, you are in the tax net.

For your information, whatever proceeds, whether a gift, upkeep, or housekeeping allowance, will be taxed. Except you become meticulous enough at keeping receipts throughout the year to present to Mr. Zacky’s agents with a convincing explanation.

My first advice is to hire a professional tax practitioner. If you can’t afford one right now, follow the alternative steps that I recommend below to get you started.

Here is the second advice;
1. Register a business (advisably, Limited Liability Company).
2. Open a bank account with the business.
3. Going forward, every kobo must go into the account.
4. Every purchase must be made by the company, personal, or official.
5. Keep a simple yet proper bookkeeping that includes the purchase side, the selling side, and the profit side.
6. Keep a receipt of all your transactions.
7. Sorry, I can’t add that.
8. Pay yourself a salary!

The year 2026 is fast approaching; start putting your house in order. So you won’t need to beg and still pay.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE YOUR BUSINESS

When asked how you measure your business health, is your first answer your account balance or profit?

Your account balance alone does not accurately reflect your business's true health. You may see $10,000 in revenue each month, but by the following month, it could be spent with justifiable expenses - yet this doesn’t ensure business sustainability.

Effective monitoring requires measures that provide a complete view-tracking. It is not just revenue, but every department, activity, and point where value is exchanged.

Incorporating measures into a business is a vital investment that many people overlook. Are you one of them?

Do you have a measuring mechanism in place?

HOW DO BUSINESSES ARRIVE AT THEIR GOALS

There are a few questions that you must answer before your business can have a clear path to success. These questions are pertinent. Because in the absence of them, your company might hit a rock.

Setting up a business involves more than resolving that the market wants a particular product and offering. There must be a defined pathway to deliver what the market wants, which, in turn, grants success.

To design the right course, you must answer the questions below. Your answer will or should form your business’s mission and objectives.

* What gap is the business addressing?
* What perception do you intend the market to have about the business?
* What is the overall strategy of the business?
* What quality of people is needed for the business?
* Where will the business be in the next 5-10years?

If the answers are obtained, you will have a document to form the pathway to success.

THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT YOU MUST GET RIGHT

Throughout my years as a business coach and consultant, I have identified specific areas or units within businesses that must be handled correctly. This is not me downplaying other units; there are some that I believe formed the pillars on which every aspect rests for overall success.

There are key aspects that every business owner must establish properly and continue to improve. Getting better at them keeps your business afloat and growing. Perhaps, if startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses can focus their resources on these aspects, they will experience the fastest growth.

For growth to happen, business owners must be intentional about these segments of their business.

Product Configuration/Betterment
Product improvement should always be an ongoing endeavour. Your product today must be better than it was yesterday. That is why R&D, or at least obtaining feedback, is something you should invest in. Taste change and preference change as well, so your product must fit every demand.

Marketing
Marketing should be your primary focus. Some would say product, but for me, marketing is. Do you know that marketing activities (inbound marketing) start immediately after the business idea is conceived? Marketing plans and ex*****on must be well thought out. Also, adequate funding delivers the desired result.

Partnership
Everything you need to know about partnership is this: “if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go with others.” Partnership is one aspect of business that has immense advantages if done right.
