Only 1% of venture capital funding in Africa reaches women-led businesses. 📊

But the issue is not a lack of ambition. Across the continent, women are building businesses through digital platforms, e-commerce, and online services, creating new pathways to income, market access, and economic participation.

The challenge is whether financing models can keep pace.

Our latest report, Financing Women’s Digital Entrepreneurship: A Pathway to Closing Africa’s Economic Gender Gap, explores what needs to change to help these digital ventures move from participation to scale.

🌍 Africa’s next growth frontier may not be underground, but in its creativity.

🎨 From fashion and film to music and digital content, Africa’s creative exports already stand at nearly $60B, with the potential to reach $140–150B by 2030.

👩🏾‍💼 Women are at the center of this transformation:

• Over 60% of the fashion workforce across the continent
• More than 80% in countries like Kenya and Madagascar
• Yet less than 1% of venture capital flows to the sector

Our new Africa Unleashed report, “Empowering Women in Creative Industries – The Continent’s Next Growth Frontier,” explores how Africa can move from undercapitalized potential to scalable, inclusive growth by:

✅ Unlocking fit-for-purpose capital
✅ Building localized production ecosystems
✅ Expanding regional and diaspora market access
✅ Accelerating digital enablement
✅ Strengthening legal and policy frameworks

Creative resources are renewable, resilient, and rooted in people.

🌍 BCG Africa Alumni Spotlight featuring Lana Mazahreh

At BCG, we celebrate leaders who drive change with purpose, empathy, and vision. Alumna Lana Mazahreh is one of them.

👣 Her journey:

Born and raised in Jordan, Lana joined BCG Johannesburg in 2014, where she led social impact work and copiloted Women@BCG.

Now based in Cape Town with her two dogs, Lana helps grow Amazon’s marketplace across South Africa, following leadership roles that have spanned Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

“BCG taught me how to see potential in others. Today, that’s how I hire. That’s how I build teams. That’s also how I make bold moves in my own career, as I can see my own potential. I’ve switched industries, roles, and countries. I always trust that I’ll figure it out. Because potential is bigger than a job title.”

💭 Her leadership mindset:

Lana believes communication is the foundation of leadership. From body language on video calls to the simple power of pausing and breathing, she sees communication as a way to create trust, openness, and connection.

“And one more thing: find your own leadership style. Leadership isn’t a template. Your energy, your voice, your pace – makes you unique. There is no one like you, that’s your edge – use it!”

💥 Her view on Africa’s potential:

“The continent is a powerhouse of innovation and resilience. To unlock its potential, we need bold investment in innovative ideas, not just from external sources, but from the continent itself.”

Lana’s story is one of courage, curiosity, and self-awareness. She reminds us that leadership is not about changing who you are but about using who you are to inspire growth in others.

Worldwide Alumni Day 2025 🌍 🤝

This year, our BCG community came together across Cairo, Cape Town & Johannesburg, Casablanca, Lagos and Nairobi to celebrate Worldwide Alumni Day (WWAD) 2025, and reinforce our connections and shared roots across the Africa alumni network.

🇪🇬 Egypt – first-ever WWAD in Cairo bringing alumni and BCGers together.

🇰🇪 Kenya – hosted leadership conversations and cross-generational exchange in Nairobi.

🇲🇦 Morocco – engaging alumni talk and networking in Casablanca.

🇳🇬 Nigeria – keynote and fireside chat in Lagos on Africa’s geopolitical future (in person and virtual).

🇿🇦 South Africa – Cape Town and Johannesburg came together on the padel court.

One message stood out: our Africa alumni community is growing fast in reach and impact.
