TROOPS KILL THREE KIDNAPPERS, RESCUE VICTIM IN EDO

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 4 Brigade, in collaboration with other security agencies, have rescued a kidnap victim, Prince Micheal Akao, and neutralised three suspected kidnappers in Sasaro Forest, Akoko-Edo LGA, Edo State.

In my previous posts, we explored how Nigeria’s technology transfer agenda is driving factory development and opening doors to new investment and industrial partnerships.

But building local industries is only one part of the equation. Who buys what we produce matters just as much.

In this third part of his interview with TVC News, Dr. Dahiru Muhammed, Chairman of the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer (PICTT), explains how and are promoting local patronage to help Nigerian-made products find a market.

He points to the presidential directive requiring government agencies to consider locally made products before opting for foreign alternatives. He also highlights products developed by NASENI, including Keke NAPEP tricycles, televisions and laptops.

Think about it: when locally made products are patronised, the impact can go beyond a single purchase. It can support local manufacturers, create opportunities for Nigerian workers and help build the market that domestic industries need to grow.

Technology transfer is about building the capacity to produce. Local patronage is about creating the demand that helps sustain it.

The question, then, is not just whether Nigeria can manufacture more, but whether we can create an environment where Nigerian-made products have a fair opportunity to compete.

Three years ago, there were fears that Nigeria could go the way of Zimbabwe.

Today, the story is changing.

. Now Operates Nearly 20 Factories Across Nigeria - Khalil Halilu ()

Halilu disclosed this during an interview on the Nativeland Podcast, where he outlined the agency’s evolving role in the Federal Government’s industrialisation drive and efforts to increase local production, create jobs and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imports.

“Before now, NASENI produces almost nothing, but now we can boast of close to 20 factories around the country,” Halilu said.

He also disclosed that close to 2,000 companies and organisations have expressed interest in working with NASENI through the agency’s partnership platform, pointing to what he described as a growing network of collaborations aimed at developing Nigeria’s industrial and technological capacity.

Mallam Alwan Hassan further explains that although NELFUND provides zero-interest loans, the scheme represents a significant benefit extended by the Federal Government to students. He notes that many beneficiaries have already begun repaying their loans.

According to him, Northerners, who make up a significant proportion of NELFUND beneficiaries, were quick to recognise the opportunity and take advantage of the programme.

Mallam Alwan also points to what he describes as encouraging developments in education across Northern Nigeria. Citing the latest NECO results, he notes that Kano emerged as the highest-performing state in the country.

He attributes the development in part to the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, whom he says has demonstrated a commitment to education and good governance dating back to his time as a Commissioner.

He further points to the pace of development in Kano, describing the state as having been transformed into a construction site. According to Mallam Alwan, this is partly a result of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to ensure that states have access to greater resources than they previously did.

Mbah’s 180-Day Water Promise Runs Dry as Enugu Residents Still Depend on Tankers

Governor Mbah had attached a specific deadline to this promise, 180 days. That deadline expired in November 2023. Yet, according to the figures and reports available, many households across the state capital continue to depend on water tankers, private boreholes, sachet water and other commercial suppliers for one of the most basic services a government is expected to provide.

The result represents what many describe as a significant failure to deliver on an explicit campaign commitment—and raises questions about the government’s budgeting, ex*****on and accountability.

For families without reliable boreholes, that failure has a direct financial cost. SaharaReporters reported that some residents were paying as much as N35,000 for a 1,000-gallon tanker of water. Even more troubling were complaints that some properties were being asked to pay water charges despite receiving little or no public supply.
